Yes, finally i have pulled my lazy finger out of my lazy arse and written the final installment to the east coast leg of my trip. I am regretting keeping scuba diving as a seperate blog now because as i did it so long ago i fear it may not be such a substantial piece of writing as i may have lead you to believe, but here goes. To start with scuba diving was AMAZING! it was the BEST thing i have ever done. I spent the most money on this but it was worth every penny and worth the agonising moment i realised i didn't have any money left and had to get a job...i know..it was that good. So i signed up for a 6 day course which was 2 days of theory ... read more

Cairns AdventuresMargaret Ashley Love Denise and Graham came and picked my up from the airport with a little sign that said "Ashley Love" on it. haha. we laughed and laughed, but we actually recognized each other anyways. They drove me into Cairns telling me all about it and dropped off all my stuff at this hostel, then we went down to central Cairns to walk around and had a great dinner, went to the night markets, then dropped me back off at my hostel and arranged to meet up in the morning at 9. We hit the road and drove up to Port Douglas, about an hour and a half away, had a nice breakfast and walked around Port Douglas which is a great little beach town with a lot of resorts in the surroudning area ... read more

Leaving our Darwin hostel bleary-eyed at 4.30AM we were given a drunken farewell from a bunch of backpackers who hadn’t gone to bed yet….not what you need when you have just woken up. We then enjoyed an hour long tour of the town, as the bus visited every hotel and motel before finally heading to the airport for our flight to Cairns. Due to availability we had ended up on a route via Gove, the most northerly point that we and probably anyone else gets to in Oz, just take a look on the map it really is remote… Arriving at Cairns, Jo picked us up from the airport and we went from being two carefree travelers out on the road, to life with the Vartan family, where the kids quickly taught us the routine ... read more

Well we arrived in Cairns and we met up with Becky again (orginally from Surf camp for those of you who dont remeber) and the next day I flew to see Ben in Surfers Paradise for 5 days. It was really cool, I met some more Kieltys, always fun! and got fed and watered very nicely for the day! Unfortunately, I didnt get to meet the last Kilety in Brisbane, and I'm very dissappointed I have been unable to complete the set! lol! I also beat Ben at mini golf AND air hockey but I see he has neglected to put that in his blog! hmmm! After 2 days here we went to Brisbane where we attended our first Aussie rules match at the Gabba, it was awesome, partly becasuse at the end of the ... read more

Slept in nice and late. Had breaky then left the hostel to go and do a bit of souvenir shopping. I'd seen a digeridoo (is that how you spell it - nope) I liked in shop down the main high street. I knew it was a terribly touristy thing to do, but it was something about them (the beautifully polished wood with the addision of Aboriginal art incorperated) that made me think "that would look cool hung on my wall!" Besides I was starting to like Aboriginal art. It only consists of coloured dots put together to form nice patterns and animals. I liked the simplicity yet effectivness (in story telling and simbolism) of it. Found the one I wanted, which had the added bonus of being bent and twisted (unlike the others which were dead ... read more

Having spent almost three months in New-Zealand and Australia, I tend to believe that the main reason the British Empire had colonized those lands in the first place was creating future vacation destinations. Think about it: send some convicts, religious sects and landless people to the other side of the world, and less than 200 years later you have the perfect vacation spot. Far, wild, amazingly rich, encompassing everything from volcanic mountains, glaciers and fiords through deserts and savannas all the way to tropical rain forests. And in the same time it's very similar to home - same food, same language (almost), same driving side. Ideal for the young student and for the old retired couple. Ingenious. I bet it had been Captain Cook's idea - "I have found those lands to be particularly fitting for ... read more

Had a great night sleep. Slept in late. Went for a wonder around Cairns. Apart from the promenade by the water front and the man made lagoon, there isnt anything special about Cairns. But wonder I did. In the sun it was incredibly hot (good preperation for Thailand.) Had lunch at the mall and then went to Quantas offices to book my ticket for Sydney. By now it was a bit cooler and for some stupid reason I decided to go for a run down by the Promenade. Considering I hadnt done any exercise for a few months now I suprised far I was able to run. I guess walking all day and lugging that hugh backpack around seems to work as execrcise. Got back and got myself showered. Then went down to the Irish bar ... read more
