Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

The Atherton Tablelands is considered THE agricultural center when it comes to Cairns. Gourmet traveling, farming and dairies are all culminated in this one place. The Tablelands has started out as a forest, but with the discovery of tin and gold in the area, settlers pushed through and slowly developed the area. From farms, it went to dairies; from forests, it became communities. This happened a few centuries ago, but the efforts of modernization continue to linger even still among the lands. The Atherton Tablelands can be found West off of Cairns. Cairns is also the hub of modern and a [View Full Entry]

If you are one on a journey of gastronomic heights, Cairns can cater to some of most twisted whims. This city up above Down Under also knows how to combine exotic eating with fine dining. Independent food trips is fast becoming one of the hottest trends in food trips (no more of those stuffed restaurant and food-nook-and-cranny-houses you get brought into). So get your camper vans ready, go on a food trip (bring your family along to heighten the experience), and bring your tastebuds to a whole new r [View Full Entry]

Good day mate! I just got back from my trip to Kuranda. It was a great day! We went up the hill with the train and got some lovely views of the surroundings. There was a Korean girl in the train and she started talking to me. After that she asked me if she could come along with me into Kuranda Village and I said: " sure". In Kuranda village I went to the Koala Gardens and guess what...I've got a few pictures with me and a Koala!!! Of course it's not for free, but hey...it's me and a koala! You [View Full Entry]

Cairns is slowly taking the title from the other locale's to become the top gateway to the mysterious and world-renowned Great Barrier Reef. In Cairns, one can virtually indulge in all aspects of the great reef. Take a boat and go drifting through the great expanses of coral, dive and snorkel through the blue waters of the reef and meet curious and not-so curious looking fishes and other marine inhabitants. And if you are the type of traveler to just lounge around near the beach, the white sands are sure to be an enticing invitation for some serious sunbathing. The forests [View Full Entry]

The East coast of Australia is probably best known for the Great Barrier Reef and it didn’t let us down. We managed to get Beccy booked on to the same Open Water Dive Course I did seven years ago which meant I was home alone for a couple of days whilst she was stuck in a classroom studying. Naturally I did the man thing - nothing much, although I did go fishing and caught a tiddler. The third and fourth day I joined Beccy aboard the Kangaroo Explorer (dive boat) where we did six dives. Beccy is now officially an Open [View Full Entry]

As my time in Cairns comes to a close, I thought it time to update you one last time about the happenings here in Far North Queensland. My work in Port Douglas came to a rather abrupt end after about 3 and a half weeks. The school holidays came to an end and there was no longer such high demand for housekeeping staff, so that was that. Thankfully I had kept up my Baskin Robbins duties, and the week I finished in Port Douglas, on of the Baskins girls left, so I could increase my hours once again. I also resumed [View Full Entry]

I went to the Great Barrier Reef today!! It was very cool. I went snorkeling and got to see tons of coral and fishies. They were some cool colors too - bright green, orange, brown, blue, etc. The coral was all kinds of weird shapes and so shallow my fins would hit it as I swam over it. The water was really rough so it took a lot of energy to swim around though. It's also fairly far away from the main land. We got up at 6 am, ate breakfast, and got ready to go. We got there at 8 [View Full Entry]

I'm officially in Cairns! I got here on Wednesday (last) night about 7:30 pm. I got dinner and ice cream and took a shower and went to bed. I got up really early and took the Kurandas train up into the mountains. It's an historically train and it was awesome. I got to see a ton of great landscapes/environments. There were really pretty water falls coming out of the mountains as well that I got pictures of. I walked around the markets/village of Kurandas for awhile and then took the Skyrail back to the bottoom. That was creepy because you're just [View Full Entry]
