I am 24 years old, and fear that the travel bug that is coursing through my veins will never leave. I seem to manage to restrain it for just long enough to get a nice bit of money under my belt, then I take that money and shoot off somewhere round the other side of the world.

Nothing compares to the excitement of landing in a new place and meeting so many new people with great stories to tell, or the freedom of being able to go anywhere at any time. With your life held on your back the world really is your oyster!

Apologies for the long delay between blogs but I have had an interesting few days moving around a lot and not much time to dedicate to writing the next instalment. After leaving Te Anau we headed to Invercargill where our intention was to boat over to Stewart Island and spend 7-10 days hiking around the track there. However, on my arrival there and after a bit of probing about the track and the anticipated weather forecast I made a decision. The island was due heavy rainfall for most of the time we planned to be there, and apparently some parts of the track were already at a stage where you were wading through mud up to your waist. Obviously this would only get worse with more rain. If the hike would be 3 or 4 days ... read more

It was time to get back to seeing more of the great outdoors as this is really where New Zealand shines, so we headed to Te Anau; the gateway to Fiordlands National Park. The journey was a little nasty due to having to nurse a hangover the whole time but after a day of relaxing I was ready and raring to go. First stop was a day trip to the illustrious Milford Sound. A two hour drive saw us arriving there in a small haze of rain. This was to be expected as we had been warned that it is not unusual for Milford Sound to get 7 or 8 metres of rainfall per year. As we were unable to walk the Milford Track due to its massive popularity we settled on a cruise through the ... read more

Ever since my brief visit to New Zealand over 2 years ago, on the way back from Australia, I have had one activity I wanted to do more than anything. It is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but personally I couldn’t think of anything better than flinging myself out of a cable car suspended 134metres over a canyon with merely a rubber cord attached to me. Queenstown was the destination and the time had finally come for me to ‘live the dream’. Following a very relaxed week over Christmas it was time to turn up the dial to 11 and Queenstown was the place to do it. Initially we were unsure we would be able to stay there over the New Year period due to its huge popularity, however, after phoning 12 different hostels to ... read more

After a rather moist experience on the Travers-Sabine track we took our time to dry out in Westport which, as the name suggests, is a small town located on the west coast. On entering the town a big billboard was on show boldly exclaiming that ‘If you want England go to Christchurch but if you want the real New Zealand come to Westport.’ I cannot imagine the New Zealand tourism board are aware of this because Westport was, to use an American term, a complete dive. It was a shabby run down town, where the main high street looks like it hasn’t had any attention in 100 years. Unfortunately the result is not an interesting look into New Zealand’s quirky past, but in fact simply an embarassment. If we had not been in such desperate need ... read more

We headed to Nelson Lakes with the intention of some laid back day hikes but what we found was by far our toughest challenge yet. The 80km Travers-Sabine hiking track climbs up to altitudes of 1787metres leading you through snow covered peaks and across raging rivers. On finding out some information at the visitors centre we decided to treat ourselves on this hike by staying at the backcountry cabins rather than in our tents. This would mean that rain would not be so much of a problem for us as we would always have a dry hut to stay in with a fire to warm us up and dry us off. Our first day involved a very relaxed and steady 2 hour walk to the Coldwater Hut which is where the main hike began. After a ... read more

This hike is one of 6 named as ‘great walks’ throughout New Zealand, so we held high hopes as we approached Marahau (the start of the Abel Tasman Track).Following the last hikes disaster, we tentatively checked the weather forecast and found it to be very positive for all of the 3 days we planned to spend hiking the 52km track. Whilst in Nelson we had arranged for a water taxi to take us out to Toturonui which was maybe two thirds of the way north along the trail, unfortunately the water taxis did not take people all the way to the end, however, this did end up working in our favour. The day before the hike we fell asleep in high spirits after an afternoon of clear blue skies and bright sunshine but on awaking on ... read more

To say that the beginning of my road trip went off without a hitch would be a lie, but even with the problems we had, it is testament to the Queen Charlotte Track’s sheer beauty that even when the fog rolls in and the skies open you are still astounded by the incredible landscapes surrounding you. We arrived at Picton in glorious sunshine with high spirits and eager anticipation of our first hike. The plan was to catch a ferry out to the end of the trail (Ship Cove) and hike the 71km track back over 4 days/3nights. We started late in the afternoon, landing in Ship Cove at about 2.30pm, and headed straight into the thick jungle that covered the hillside. The first day we only hiked 4.5km but this took 2 hours due to ... read more

So my first blog of New Zealand has arrived, unfortunately it will not have been worth the wait and is more of a prelude to the proper blogging that will begin shortly. The reason for this is that since landing in Christchurch on 19th October i have simply been looking for work and then working, so nothing particularly exciting for you all to read about. However, i thought that as i come to the end of my first stint of work (ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!) i would do a quick blog to fill you in with a brief overview of my last 5 weeks. I managed to get a lift with a friend from my previous travels in australia who lived in Christchurch and happened to be heading to Blenheim a couple of days after ... read more

I heard a lot of good things about San Diego coming down the coast and after spending 5 nights here I would have to agree. San Diego is a great city with something for everyone. The bars in the Gaslamp Quarter are a guaranteed good time any day of the week, Balboa park is a beautiful spot for just relaxing in the Californian sun, and the city itself is full of architectural delights that offer everything one could possibly desire. Due to the fact that it is now out of Summer (although it is still blazing sunlight and hitting 25 degrees some days) I got my accommodation for only $15 a night which is fantastic. The hostel also offers free breakfasts everyday and a dinner 3 nights a week so an absolute bargain to stay there. ... read more

A place has never been more worthy of its name. Known as ‘Disneyland for adults’ this money pit is ready to swallow you whole. Bright, flashing lights send you into a daze as you wade through numerous hands thrusting business cards advertising an array of illustrious women into your path . If you avoid the temptation of a yard of margarita for $5 then you will inevitably fall foul to one of the casinos. It’s Vegas baby! Having never been to a casino in my life I feel like Vegas is one hell of an introduction. You can’t help but be filled with eager anticipation of what the night will bring as the lights hypnotise and entice anyone and everyone walking the strip, each place fighting for your attention, determined to take you in. The extravagant ... read more
