Well after leaving La Ticla we made our way south to Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. Zihuat being a mexican holiday destination and Ixtapa being a tourist high rise destination. So we stayed obvoiusly in Zihuat and and went surfing at Trocones. It was here that I got the worst sun burn I have ever had on my back. After 3 days of no sleep I started to blister and I had to go to the doctor. It took 2 weeks to heal. Another medical disaster occured here too as I had a hole in my tooth that was starting to get really painful. So I found a dentist and I had a filling without anaesthetic! Not a pleasant experience. Especially when you don't speak Spanish and your friend is translating that the dentist is calling her brother ... read more

It was almost dark when we arrived at Buffalo Bill State Park and when we awoke we were greeted with one of the most beautiful sights we’ve ever seen from any of our campsites. We drove back into Cody and had breakfast and fueled up before heading into Yellowstone National Park - only about 50 mile away. We had to drive through a series of tunnels along the river and the scenery was great. We drove into Yellowstone at the east entrance. The landscape there was scarce with trees on the hillside due to fire damage. Yellowstone Lake seem quite endless as we drove around her shores. We saw buffalo on the beach. We found a campsite at Bridge Bay. It took us a while to rearrange all of our equipment and supplies - to bear-proof ... read more

I taught for two days with Adama, my Fulbright exchange teacher and then handed over the keys. He survived his first day yesterday, only slightly bruised. Now I have only days before I leave. Too much to do, and too little time. The impending sadness of telling my mom goodbye and my friends of 20 years is creeping into my daily thoughts. Have already shed some silent tears and am trying not to dwell on any airport scene. I can't believe that in a matter of 5 days I'll be on a continent I haven't set foot on in 27 years.....that's a very very long time. Part of my heart has been in Africa that whole time. I've tried to keep my expectations low for this coming year; I vascillate between images of friendly dinners with ... read more

Sheridan, WY and Story, WY have provided us a needed respite from the road and the hazards of a wet sleeping bag or another night at the New Bates Motel. First we found Doug Estes at the Sheridan Tent & Awning Co. who agreed to make a light-weight tarp to our specs with grommets and a flap for $35. We pick it up Friday morning to replace our leaking rain fly. Thank you, Doug! Second, we found the Story Pines Inn, a small family run place with cozy rooms, laundry, wi-fi and popcorn! It's great. There was even a little card in the room that said, "Welcome Susan and Jim." Thank you to Paula and Patrick Morgan! We have gotten some rest, good food and clean clothes and are ready to go back on the road. ... read more

Well i'm here and it's beautiful. The weather is nice..it's cool today thanks to Dean but I can't complain at all. I have met most of the group already and everybody is nice...very differnet and from very differnet places of the US but it should be cool. I don thave much to say YET but believe you me I will after this whole thing gets going. When I arrived it was only 20 min drive from the airport to the Town and then I hate to say it but they just kind of dump you off and tell you were to be the next morning. It was okay because it has given us a chance to talk and see the city just by walking around. I miss everyone but not enough to come home lol I ... read more

On Monday 20th Sal and I went for a walk to the front entrance of Lewes River Farm which was about 4.6km there and back. Sal then went for a run while I had a shower and packed my bags. Martha took us into Whitehorse where we ate lunch at Tim Hortons which is a coffee-and-doughnut fast food restaurant chain largely based in Canada. They have freshly made wraps, soup and sandwiches at good prices so we enjoyed our meal. I felt sad saying goodbye to Sal and Martha, we had a wonderful trip together. Lori picked me up at Vancouver Airport. Lori and Ted had 90th Birthday Party for Lori's Dad on the Sunday so we had a great meal from the left overs. On Tuesday I went for a ride to second beach at ... read more

San Francisco To Crater Lake. We took the California Zephyr amtrak from Chicago to San Francisco. What a very scenic train trip. The best amtrak trip I have taken and I have taken practically all of them except the Soutwest Chief. Train Going through the Rockies Train Ride Through Utah Sunrise In Nevada On Train We spent a couple of days in San Francisco. Took a tour and there are many different ones so look at all you get before investing. From San Francisco we drove a rental car to Crescent City. It was awesome going through the Redwood Forest. Ghostly Voices in an old Gold Mine As we loaded our provisions into two canoes alongside the long wooden pier at Bare Point Marina, the smell of fresh cooked pork sausages filled the air. It made me hungry. The four of us had already drove half an hour west from Kenora, through an unkempt Indian reservation named Rat Portage, to the north east corner of the Lake of the Woods. I knew it would be another hour or more before we stopped for anything to eat. It was Saturday afternoon and the world was bright and alive with the sound of children’s voices, dogs barking, and the ubiquitous hum of motor boat engines. None of us could fathom that our adventure would leave the land of living and descend into the darkness of the dead. This ... read more

They call the stretch of land down the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula the Mayan Riviera. It is a great spot on the carribean sea with white sand beaches, the most amazingly blue sea bordered by jungle. Ben was dreading the thought of ´beach days´ but I really wanted to stop here and enjoy the coast. Our first stop was Tulum, and we picked up an overpriced cabaña on the beach. Cabaña sounds reasonably romantic, but it was little more than a concrete floor (some were just sand), some sticks for walls and a thatch roof. We walked in to find a crab had already claimed the room and it snapped at our toes before scuttling under the bed. The setting was superb. We were right on the beach and we could see tracks in ... read more
