Chicago We finally arrived in Chicago despite the horrendous traffic(Im glad we arent driving in New York!)We said goodbye to the monte at the airport and hopped on the subway to our next hostel, in the Lincoln Park area of the city. We were amazed at how clean Chicago was compared to New York. The Navy pier was our first tourist spot, the air show was on last weekend so we watched them practising for it over lake Michigan. The pier was full of restaurants , boat moorings and kids things. A lot better than the piers back home!Sadly while we were there I found out my auntie mavis died, it was such a shock that I spent ages in a daze, its times like this that you want to be back home more than ever. ... read more

On our last day in Vegas, I walked the entire strip to see all of the hotels. Since it was 106 degrees, I was pretty tired when I finally finished. I have some pictures of the outside of the hotel New York, New York. That was definitely one of the best hotels with the most to offer out of the others on the strip. Later on we went to a buffet for dinner at the Flamingo hotel. Mullet ate an unprecendented amount of food this time. We all sat for at least 20 minutes while he continued to shovel multiple plates of food into his stomach. After dinner, Mullet and I went to see the wax museum that is in the Venetian hotel. I updated my photos with some pictures of my walk as well as ... read more

Hello from Chicago! I am currently at orientation in Chicago with the other international Young Adult Volunteers (of the PC (USA) church) and the Young Adult s in Global Mission (of the Lutheran church). The week has been needed since the time at home right before leaving was understandibly very hectic. I have been amazed how I've handled this whole process (or rather not thought about it until now), starting from back in April when I was selected to go to the Philippines as an Ecumenical Intern for the United Church of Christ of the Philippines as a Young Adult Volunteer. I didn't take in the immensity of the coming year, instead I was mostly relieved to find that I finally had an answer to the often asked, “Do you have plans after graduation?” This past ... read more

Just some thoughts and shots of our time spent here in Canada. Much more to follow but I find that I have only 3 hours of work left on my last Day of work so this is brief. We immensley enjoyed our two years in Calgary and made many freinds that we will miss. Ok, so several months have passed since leaving work and now it's only 4 days until we begin our journey That being said we are already missing Ceasar's, Poutine, and Donairs. So here's a big shout out to Calgary and our freinds for being so warm and welcome. ... read more

Life is good. Ticking along. In the interests of maintaining a blog, I will just put a few quick words up here without boring you too much about the mundane details. We have not really done too much tourist stuff, just a lot of local living stuff, like dinners, bbq’s and parties with friends. Good climbing at the local crag that is the Chief, runs, walks, bike rides… A couple of friends from Canberra are around at the moment (Damo and Bertram), so that has been fun and kinda weird. We all met up at a pub in town last night, and wondered who else we could get over here from the Nation’s heartland. If Nick was still here, we’d have a mini-thriving Canberra community! Anyone tempted? Have we told you how good the rock over ... read more

22Aug07 - Wentworth - Pushed to get to Cape Breton Island before the storm systems arrive by the weekend. I rode as far as I could till dark and arrived in Pugwash only to find out their were no accommodations available. :-( I reluctantly rode after dark to Wentworth. 23Aug07 - Sydney - Left Wentworth and was disappointed to discovered had I ridden the extra 25km from Pugwash to Tatamagouche I could have stayed in a cool converted railway station and rail cars. Rode the beautiful coast line of the Cape Breton Island. I had a tense couple of hours of riding through the park after dark. This is the most dangerous time since: 1) Deer and moose are more likely to wander onto the roads. 2) It's a park! wild animals are not hunted and ... read more

After stopping in Wisconsin to visit friends and play a few games of pool, we headed west toward Minnesota. Of course, on our way across Wisconsin we did stop to pickup some cheese (yum!). Our first stop in Minnesota was Minneapolis, where we swung by Mall of America just to check it out. The list of shops in the directory was dumbfounding, so we started walking around. In the center of the 100-acre mall is a mini amusement park, with roller coasters, rides, carnival games and ridiculous prizes. Looks like fun, but as we just spent a couple of days at Cedar Point, we moved on. We walked a full circle around the outside of this amusement area, which sounds simple but it was quite a hike! this outer area is where all the shops are. ... read more

Our guide didn't turn up for our sunrise hike so I watched the sunrise from my balcony, took a couple of photos then went back to bed. The two hour hike after breakfast was fantastic. There are railed lookouts for tourists in some sections of the canyon but one particular rock ledge is not and there is a loose rock that the some of the tour guides walked out on to get photo ops for the tourists. I thought if they can do it, so can I so I climbed across to where they were and stood 7800ft above sea level on the edge of this rock ledge! The other tourists were a distance away so I look like a dot on a rock ledge in the photo but it's definitely me. I would never do ... read more

070823 Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, Washington After leaving Seattle I drove about 45 minutes south to Sumner Washington where my friend and co-worker Bryan grew up. I crashed at his dad’s apartment which was empty at the moment. While there I waterproofed my tent because it wasn’t very waterproof when it rained in Yellowstone. We pretty much relaxed all day, watched movies, did some laundry (since both of us are nomads we wash laundry when we can), and did general upkeep on our gear, like waterproofing, sharpening knives, whatever. I was thinking about going to Mt Rainer for a day then going to Olympic National Park for a day. Bryan suggested I use both days for Olympic National Park and stressed how cool the Hoh Rainforest on the west side of the park was. I ... read more

The drive up hiway 12 from Lewiston, Idaho to Missoula, Montana was beautiful. The canyon was alive with activity and the fishing was wonderful. I tell ya ! The world gets smaller and smaller all the time! We arrived here in Missoula and found our buddies Judy and Wally, and Bill and Lois again. We spent three days together here just having a wonderful time. It doesn't take much to entertain us. We brought out the blongo ball game and Judy Diefenbach and Bill Also (aka Bill Maxey) beat all of us! We had a lot of fun. Went out to dinner to the Iron Horse in downtown Missoula, to the farmers market, and cooked dinner out one night at the motor home. What a great time! Sometimes, you just have to kick back and do ... read more
