We had several reasons for visiting Alamosa, Colorado. One of the biggest reasons was to ride the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad narrow gauge steam train. We chose to ride the LaVeta Pass route on their first class service. On our trip up the mountain, we passed a spot where several railroad cars had overturned. They were private cars from Coors Brewery. They had been filled with hops and barley. Several attempts were made to cover the hops and barley with dirt but the Bears kept finding it. After a while it fermented underground and NOW the bears really wanted it ! A real site to see is the drunken bears leaning on the trees after enjoying too much fermentation! Hillarious ! Starting in 1878, Alamosa was connected to Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo by ... read more

We took Patricia Noel to the Strater Hotel for dinner and a play for her birthday! The play was a delightful melodrama called The Pursuit of Happiness. Dinner at the Mahogany Grille was fabulous ! This hotel was built in 1888 and has more mahogany antiques than anywhere else in the United States. Durango was built in 1881 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan Mining District. It sits on the Animas river which runs through town and is known for it's spectacular white water rafting, world class fly fishing, kayaking and canoeing. Durango is nestled among the San Juan mountains and is also popular for outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, off roading, and last but not least world class golfing. The San Juan Symphony performs ... read more

Mesa Verde National Park is one of the premier archeological parks administered by the Department of the Interior, National Park Service. It is one of 15 national park units in Colorado and nearly 400 nationwide. On June 29, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Mesa Verde National Park to preserve the works of ancient man, the first and still the only park of it's kind. Preserved here is extraordinary record of the Ancestral Puebloans who made this place their home for more than 750 years, from A.D. 550 to A.D.1300. With over 52,000 acres, Mesa Verde preserves and protects nearly 5,000 archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, and over three million objects and archives in the research collection. The dwellings were all hand carved. Stones and mud were all carved and made by hand and laid like ... read more

There is so much to do here in this little town of Pagosa Springs. Countless centuries ago, the inhabitants of the Four Corners area of southern Colorado discovered a mineral-rich hot springs on the banks of the San Juan River. During the 1870's a U.S. govetnment fort, Fort Lewis, was established near the site of the springs, and shortly thereafter, a town called Pagosa Springs began growing up along the banks of the San Juan River. The indians called it Pag-Osah, meaning "Healing Waters". In a U.S. Army physicians report in the 1860's, the physicians declared "The waters of Pagosa Springs are without a doubt the most healing and wonderful waters that have ever been discovered". As the news spread, the springs became a very popular destination and is still a popular destination for travelers today. ... read more

We have wanted to visit Canyon Lake for many years. Our friends, Tom and Jan Prosch live there now and have a beautiful new home. While there we visited their friends, Bob and Ann Gibson and their beautiful new home as well. We had an opportunity to go to Gruene, Texas and see the old Dance Hall where many country music legends like George Strait and Willie Nelson got their start. Lunch at the Old GristMill was an experience. Walking the streets and visiting all the little shops of the little town of Gruene was fun. We love this area of Texas. Well, after spending last summer at home and sharing time with family we decided to head west again this summer to see family, friends, and do a little sightseeing and fishing. Our first stop was Vicksburg , Mississippi to visit the beautiful town and tour the Vicksburg National Military Park commemorating the "Siege of Vicksburg" during the American Civil War. This National Military Park rambles over more than 1800 acres. Sixteen miles of road wind through historic battle sites lined with more than 1300 monuments, statues, and markers. Vicksburg was a very prosperous city but the civil war changed that. Known to history as the "Gibralter of the Confederacy", Vicksburg's importance was evident to Abraham Lincoln who, early in the war referred to the city as "the key to the war". Vicksburg is a city build ... read more
