A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary, whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent (which I cannot deny myself to be without being impious) will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place. -Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ok, I know that may sound a bit arrogant, but Mozart definately was. So anyway, when we last tuned in, Soarpheat was getting ready to go on a sea kayaking trip with Chris's girlfriend Ashley and her family. Having never gone on a trip like that, none of the participants knew what was going to happen, but each had their own ideas. However, the events that took place over the next several days were far different from even their wildest expectations. The first stop was the dealer of kayaks on Quadra ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver August 24th 2007

Day 13 A 9 o’clock start saw us heading off from North Bend and up to Vancouver. It seemed strange to be dealing with customs and immigration without having got off an airplane. We called in to see a friend of Tom and Shirley’s but missed her by about ten minutes, we will pop in again tomorrow. We then headed to Terry and Mary Snutches home where we found Terry ready and waiting with the beer iced down! After a brief leg stretch and rehydration break it was off for a quick tour around the city. Terry’s place is about 4 houses from Pacific Spirit Park which is the largest urban park in the world. Vancouver is also home to Stanley Park, which is the second largest urban park in the world. There are nice beaches ... read more

I am an American, and I learned that quickly after my trip to Colombia. My roots though grounded in Colombia have grown and flourished in the states. I am grateful for so many wonderful memories, and the experiences that will remain with me. And one day, I’ll return , but now with a more vivid idea of what to expect. ... read more

The temperature overnight was in the mid 30’s. Boy does it get cold up here. After breakfast we headed to explore the upper loop of Yellowstone. We stopped at the Sulfur Caldron (pretty stinky) before heading to the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. We were in a cloud for awhile in the morning, but it cleared up as the day went on. We saw a bunch of people on the side again, this time looking at another pack of wolves - this time we did see them. We saw Tower Falls and then continued on to Mammoth Hot Springs. I was really disappointed with what I saw. Having been here before, 27 years ago, I remember that there was water running over the terraces and the colors were fantastic. Today mostly all the ... read more

We left Wash D.C. and headed West to Indiana for a quick visit with Tom's daughter Kathy and our 2 grand daughters. Since you all ask, we can say our little miracle child Megan, and her sister Taylor are doing great. Then off to the Adirondacks where we had no cell phone because Tom lost it in a 2 hour tubing trip that took 5 hours. The water wasn't moving, the sun went down and I got shaky cold. Tom said "save Karen or save the phone?" mmmmmmm. So I dried out and we headed to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Spent a few days on a little island. Beautiful. Now we are in Kalamazoo, Michigan, waiting out storms before we go to Mackinaw Island. We miss all our friends and thank ya'll for responding to our ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota » Pierre August 24th 2007

Got back from a trip to South Dakota late last evening. On the agenda was a stayover in Pierre, SD where I had a couple hours to drive around the city. I have been to Pierre several times but it's been a year since my last visit. The town is experiencing a little bit of a building boom with some new retail and housing being built. For a capitol city, it's a small city (about 14,000); however, it is extremely pretty. According to wikipedia, Pierre is one of only 5 state capitols which is not served by an interstate highway system and it is about a half hour from the interstate. There are lots of open areas on the Capitol grounds with various state building located around it. Several memorials, statues and fountains make up the ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida August 24th 2007

Everything is back to normal in Merida as I can see on my little north end of town. I have heard from my friend in Veracruz and all is well on that end. The Diario de Yucatan, http://www.yucatan.com.mx/, reports this morning that there is a preliminary official count of 10 dead across Mexico because of Dean, but that those who passed away prior to, during and after that are attributed to various 'points' as they call them are not considered in the count. A fall from an upper portion of a house, an overturned car, a falling limb during cleanup, an electrocution of a home owner trying to repair a damaged line, a drowning by one who ignored safety personnel, etc. Storm didn't actually cause the deaths. Article continues on to say that all was not ... read more

Zuerst mal Sorry für die lange Abwesenheit!!!der Travelblog wollte unsere Berichte nicht updaten.......aber jetzt: So, die Grenze war kein Problem. Nur kurze formalitäten und die obligaten Fragen wie do you have weapons und whats your buisness in Switzerland….and what do you want to do in Alaska….was wohl?

North America » Canada » Quebec August 24th 2007

I’m just back from a five-week adventure in another French speaking place-Québec! After some debating between returning to France for the summer or trying out Québec I decided to enroll in a 5 week intensive language program in Chicoutimi (a town of about 70,000 people 2 hours north of Québec City) at the University of Québec. It was marvelous! After Paris I completed my degree at CU Boulder, but, sadly, did not have the time to take any French courses. So I was rather rusty going into this program after a year away from the language. Anyway, I grabbed a plane to Montréal and took the city, and the start to my five weeks, by storm. The last time I visited Montréal it was in the dead of winter, so this was an entirely different experience. ... read more
