When I was about 6 the movie “Calamity Jane” starring Doris Day and Howard Keale was released. This was the first summer that my mom worked full time and her dad, my granddad took care of me. The cinema was just around the corner from his house and my friends and I went to see the “Calamity Jane” Tuesday matinee. Matinee showings were held just three times a week and I begged for the sixpence to go back on Thursday. Then I begged my parents to take me back again on Friday night—because they were really going to enjoy this movie (we didn’t have a TV yet!) I still remember parts of it. When I was driving toward Rapid City I really didn’t realize that Deadwood was in that vicinity. So I was quite delighted and ... read more

Nadien zijn we naar Niagara on the Lake gereden waar de Niagara rivier in Lake Ontario ... read more

Saturday August 25, 2007 This morning was a beautiful sunny morning. The temperature was in the low 40’s and it warmed up to the mid-sixties by afternoon. We caught the bus to Fish Creek at 9:10 am. Since we weren’t hiking I took my telephoto lens, hoping to get some good shots when we saw animals. The bus driver was good (willing to stop and take time) and we saw a fair amount of wildlife today; several bears, some sows with cubs, caribou, moose and a gyrfalcon, which is rare. We even saw some of Mt. McKinley today. We got back to the campground about 3:00 pm. On our way into the campground we were stopped by a young lady who remembered us - - the Polish woman who was biking alone that we met 3 ... read more

There was ice on the car top carrier, the temperature fell below freezing overnight. I was a little chilly under our sleeping bag. We got out our wool hats to wear on these cold nights to keep the body heat in. We took all our food and stoves out of the bear box, tied all the containers down on our cargo carrier and left for the Grand Tetons. Heading out of Yellowstone we passed the Lewis Falls and followed the Lewis River which gradually worked it’s way down into a gorge several hundred feet down. As we were riding through the forest we got our first glimpse of the mighty Tetons. The closer we got the more impressive the mountains became. The Teton Mountains are massive rock formations over 12,000 feet. We got several nice pictures ... read more

Rugby was another stop on my way to the International Peace Garden. A stone monument in Rugby, North Dakota marks the geographical center of North America (the world's fourth largest continent). The location was marked in January 1931 by a US Geological Survey. A clever mileage chart tells you how far away Mexico and some other locations are. Also located in Rugby is the Northern Lights Tower. According to the Dakota Day Trips book, the Tower is about 90 feet tall and depicts the four stages of the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights). It has multiple colors reflecting the lights one sees in the sky. We North Dakotans know that we are fortunate to often see the Northern lights. Located nearby is another tower which you can climb to get an aerial view of Rugby and the ... read more

After Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Shazza and I headed north through the Big Horn Mountains, which were covered in the smoke haze from the ongoing forest fires. We took a detour west to visit the Battle of Little Bighorn National Memorial, better known as "Custer's Last Stand". It was where up to 2000 Sioux warriors defeated the U.S. 7th Cavalry and killed close to 300 soldiers and Crow scouts as they tried to force the Sioux Indians back into the reservations. It would be the last victory for the Plains Indians, led by Sitting Bull and the legendary Crazy Horse. The native ranger gave a passionate presentation of the events leading up to and including the battle, incorporating quotes from those present on both sides. One description upon seeing the Sioux's 20,000 strong herd ... read more

Just a few photos of purification fountains in Japan. According to our guide Kondor, before you enter a shrine, you need to use the purification fountain to wash your hand and rinse your mouth. At the offering hall, you throw in a few coins into the offering box and bow deeply twice, clap your hand twice, and bow deeply once more and then pray for a few seconds. Just want to test whether I can upload an video successfully before we start our trip. Don't know if I will really be able log in but I'll try.... read more

Greenland?? Well who would have thunk it. Not I, not this year. With finally getting back to work later than expected, I was anticipating an entire summer out in wild places around the Yukon. But the company I work for had more than just that in mind. But before getting into that let me elaborate slightly on the highlights of my first month of work in central Yukon. I was working up between Carmacks and Dawson on a helicopter fly-drill looking for gold in some very steep hillsides. I was in a great camp which, on one occasion deemed it a good evening to boost “camp moral”. We talked the helicopter pilot to fly an hour each way to Dawson to do a booze run. At a landed cost of $65/beer, that cool, tasty beverage never ... read more
