North America August 26th 2007

After 27 hours of traveling, we made it home safe and sound. All three flights were very smooth. It's still amazing to me that we can see the sunrise in Tel Aviv and see the sunset half way around the world! ... read more

My very good friends Clark and Tiffany came to Great Falls to celebrate the marriage of one of Clark's old army buddies. My other friend Perkins (who was living with me for a chunk of the summer) and I decided to fly up there and pay them a visit. We grabbed some lunch at a pizza joint and went to visit the bird pond. There were so many ducks and birds the water was murky with duck droppings! Then we grabbed some frozen yogurt and made for back for Bozeman. It is always worth the drive to see good peeps, but it was exceptionally nice since it had been over a year that I had seen Clark.... read more

Woke up early this morning and we all made breakfast and coffee. We went to have showers and get ready then cleaned up our mess and learned how to pack our tents, which we would have to do most mornings. Soon after we were ready to go, everyone jumped into the van and we were off to our next stop, Yosemite National Park. On the way we stopped off at a famous saloon called "Iron Door" which was established in 1852. We walked inside to find hundreds of dollar bills pinned to the roof which was a strange sight. The idea was to get $1, the guy behind the bar would give you a pin then you throw the bill into the ceiling. Easy enough, Dave did it first try, mine on the other hand taken ... read more

We stayed in Santa Monica for 3 days and went to the Pier, 3rd Street promonade, muscle beach (where Chris put everyone to shame!) whilst sorting out our car hire. We went on a day tour of LA and the stars homes!! Didn't see any stars and they could have been any rich person's homes! The tour took us to Rodeo drive, hollywood blvd, up to the Hollywood sign, Mann's chinese theatre and the walk of fame. We collected the car and then had to navigate out of LA (7 lane highways - very exciting/scary!) and onto highway 1. We stopped at Santa Barbara briefly for lunch and then drove onto San Luis Opisbo. This was a nice little college town and we got free pancakes for breakfast!! Headed on the following day to drive the ... read more

Alright, now we’re really adjusted. Danielle and I were the first ones up at 8:00, so we had to hurry up and get the car packed. We were due at the water taxi at 8:45 for a full day at Kachemak Bay State Park. We made it with a little rushing and some groggy kids. The 7 of us went with Mako (our captain). On the way, he took us past Gull Island for view of nesting kittiwakes, murres, and puffins. There were hundreds of birds, including black footed kittewakes, murres, and a couple of tufted puffins. A sea otter came to visit as well. Mako dropped us at Glacier Spit with instructions on how to get to the trailhead. As we started walking, a bald eagle flew past. We hiked about 2 and a half ... read more

Hello readers! After 8 months of travelling I am finally home in Kakabeka. I was planning a final series of pictures, but got too busy packing and moving and finishing up work. I got a large selection of photos printed yesterday however and have arranged them all in albums which I am in the process of labelling. Sooo... if you want to see more of my trip you are welcome to come over for a visit and check them out. I'm now relaxing, enjoying the Canadian sunshine, and looking for a job in Ottawa for the fall. Next Friday I'll be headed to Ottawa to unpack my bags for good (at least a year). It will be nice to be settled and be able to spread out again. Maybe I'll continue the blog on my next ... read more

Today Jerry and I got a lesson about progress. It was Ikea day in our household, meaning a trip to Maryland through DC. Not normally frightening on the weekend, as you aren't fighting with the whole of the district for your few feet of space on the road. After finding a coveted parking spot in the Ikea lot, we headed into the insanity. We had three main things on our list: bookshelf, shoe storage, hangers. We did manage to find the bookshelf that matches the one we already have, but when we headed off to find the nice shoe storage and hangers, they weren't there!! Well, I mean, there were other hangers and other shoe storages, but not mine. In a couple of months, they've gotten rid of those styles. CRAP! I figured out a solution, ... read more

I arrived in Mexico City in the arvo and checked into my hotel. There are only four of us on the tour, plus our tour guide. Our tour guide is a 34yo Mexican with a long beard, he said his nickname is Taliban but we can call him Sid. I´m sharing a room for the next fifteen days with a Canadian girl called Tiffany, she´s 22 and we get along great. The other two men are from Belgium (they don´t know each other though). Ben is 24 and quiet. The other guy, Ludo is 48 and looks like an older version of Spud. But unlike Spud, he's a major wanker. At our first meeting at 7pm he reeked of beer then after the meeting our first stop was the pub. He drank two large beers and ... read more

North America » Mexico » Puebla » Puebla City August 26th 2007

After 4 days in big ol´Mexico City, I decided to see what some of the smaller towns were like, so I travelled 2 hours by bus to a cute town called Puebla. It is really dinky and there are lots of old beautiful brightly-coloured buildings. There is a main square where they have performances and entertainment every night, and people selling helium balloons on every corner. I also spent an afternoon in a nearby town called Cholula, which is home to the widest pyramid ever built. Not that it looks like a pyramid, mind you- it is all covered in grass, and when the Spanish invaded they built a church on it! Have been eating lots of yummy spanish food. At the moment cheese quesadillas are my favourite and I´m still laughing at plates of refried ... read more

North Pole We left Fairbanks and headed southeast to the North Pole. No not THE North Pole but the town in Alaska named North Pole. Of course there is a Christmas theme to the town. We noticed even a welding company had gigantic candy canes as part of the entrance to the company. Items that are mailed from this town are postmarked “North Pole.” Delta Junction This was our next stop. We took pictures by the marker for the end of the Alaska Highway, so now we have a picture at each end. We had planned to have dinner at a restaurant outside of DJ on the way to Tok, but it was closed. Being self contained we made our own dinner at a scenic pullout. On our drive we saw moose. Once there was ... read more
