Our two week holiday in August started off in New York for 3 days, then we hired a car and set off up the coast to New Haven, the home of the prestigious Yale University. We stayed there for two nights with a friend, Lumor, who attends the University. We met Lumor while we were volunteering in Peru in 2005. From there we headed for Boston via a cool little place called Mystic. In Boston we stayed with Dennis, an old family friend of Gerry's family from Scotland. He married Karen, an American, and emigrated out there and now has three children. While in Boston we met up with another old friend, Solomon, from Uganda. He lived with us in London while he pursued studies in accountancy, then he won the Green Card Lottery which allowed ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls August 23rd 2007

The Niagara Falls are not far from Toronto, so it would be a crime not to go. We hired a car, which worked out a lot cheaper than a coach tour and also meant that we didn’t need to be ready at the crack of dawn. As we learned from Australia last year (see ), the information on these tours is fantastic, but it doesn't quite make up for the rounds of hotel pick-ups and waiting for all the pensioners to amble back in their own good time. We'd been warned that the Niagara Falls town was a bit of a tourist trap and should be avoided, but nothing could have prepared us for the tacky Blackpool meets Las Vegas nightmare that opened up before us. It had to be seen to be believed that such ... read more

The Grand Teton National Park is a little over two hours from Yellowstone, yes we are a little crazy but we're trying to see as much as possible. The drive follows the Snake River another beautiful scenic area. How much beautiful scenery can you take in? Anyway the Grand Tetons are magnificent. (I'm running out of adjectives!!) We went to Jackson to see how the rich cowboys and cowgirls live. Sylvan thought it was kind of like a western version of Nantucket. Lots of very expensive shops. Fur and taxidermy are VERY popular here. We stopped at the Million Dollar Bar for a beer. The bar seats are real saddles (I'm so glad I didn't attempt a trail ride) and the prices are high. At $4.50 for a bottle of beer (no drafts) there was no ... read more

Today was Amy's last day in New York City before she was catching a bus to Philadelphia to continue her travels. So today we decided to explore central park a bit better and visit anywhere else we wanted to go but hadn't been yet. Most of the day we just wondered 5th avenue taking photos of different buildings and architecture but we ended up in "F.A.O Schwarz" which is a massive multi storey toy store which is packed full of different toys. We went in a videoed a guy doing a rubix cube in under a minute which was very impressive, don't know how he did it. We then moved on to Central Park and went photo crazy exploring around Central Park. We didn't have too much time left so we did what we could then ... read more

i stayed an extra 2 weeks in kutz camp to work there, because i'm waiting for my family to come here in about a month anyway (september 23 if my memory serves me right). last week was pretty fun, this week was kinda annoying because there was a lot of work and the camp was pretty empty, but it's ok now - today a nfty group came here and i'm leaving on sunday to NYC. i'll stay a few days with a friend from taglit (basha) and from there we'll see, probably DC and back to NY for the holidays (with anither friend from taglit - marcus)... and then my parents are coming... I also bought a plane ticket to south america, so my next completely planed step is a flight on october 30 from miami ... read more

I was up for 24 hours before I even started this trip. You know how sometimes you just don't think things through? When I bought my plane tickets many months before, a 5:30 am flight sounded like a great idea. However...a 5:30 am flight leaving from DIA this morning translated into needing to be at Stapleton to catch the DIA bus by 4:00 am, which meant leaving my humble apartment by 2:30 am. By the time I had run, fixed my bag, packed my bag, run to K Soopers for food to pack, and watered my plants, it was 1:30 am. I spent the remaining hour watching Arrested Development - even funnier when you're delirious. So keeping in mind that I haven't pulled an all-nighter in a long time (was Clinton in office?), I show up ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage August 23rd 2007

Suffice it to say that it was rainy, Anchorage is not a beautiful city, our bodies are still on east coast time, and I’m settling into a work schedule. Danielle and the girls went to the grocery store today and had some major sticker shock with prices. Everything was anywhere between 40-100% more money. We had a mother moose and her 2 calves visit us on Wednesday evening outside our “apartment”. Another highlight is that we were able to hook up our voice over internet phone and can receive calls as if we were sitting at home (although with the time difference we have had to stop ourselves from calling friends and family at 1 a.m., thinking oh it’s only 9 o’clock). The girls got an Anchorage library card to be able to take advantage of ... read more

No Cycling Today Thursday, 23 August 2007 Well, now my right hand is really sore. The pain woke me up during the night and made it difficult to get back to sleep, even with ibuprofen and a wrap around it. It was also amazingly difficult to brush my hair or my teeth this morning - it hurts the most when I bend my wrist. I sure hope nothing’s broken. Fortunately the swelling isn’t particularly bad, so I figure it’s just a bone bruise or something like that. And I’ve got PLENTY of elastic bandages, so wrapping it presents no problem. But as a result of it cycling is pretty much out of the question, sigh. So I went with Bob and Panna to the walking path at Ramsey Lake, near Science North, a museum dedicated to ... read more
