Our first trip to Alaska July 15-25th 2007, We have always loved Colorado the best of all places we've been, but Alaska has Co. beat!!!!! It's alot like Co. going to see Mt. Mckinley, but the coastal part is the best. Mt. Mckinley can only be seen 20% of the time, and we got to see it going and leaving Denali National Park. The two boat tours we took were great, we even saw some whales !! one out of Seward and the other out of Whittier......Thay both had wild life, the one out of whittier was a glacier cruise. Hope u enjoy these pics........ read more

While staying in New York City we had heard about this famous deli called "Katz Delicatessen". It was a while out of the way but we decided to go check it out and experiance a true New York City Deli. We walked in at straight away a guy gave us a blue docket which we had to hold onto. There was loads to choose from and it took me a while until I decided on at turkey sandwich with lettuce and mayo. I put in my order with the Sandwich maker who then while making my sandwich put some turkey on a small plate for me to try first, it was fantastic, really good turkey. He offered me some me some pickles with my meal which I declined and went to eat my lunch, it was ... read more

Finally we arrive at the destination that was the centerpiece of our trip. Words cannot describe the visual experience so Sylvan's pictures will have to do. Keep in mind this park is the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. We saw our first Buffalo on our ride into the park an amazing sight. Anywhere you see cars pulled over you know there is wildlife nearby. The Old Faithful Inn is spectacular we checked in and immediately made dinner reservations for our stay. Good thing, Thursday and Friday they only had 9:15 and 9:00 left. Our room was in the "new" wing very basic but nice, no TV (how will Sylvan fall asleep?) or Internet which is why it's taken a week to get caught up on the blog. We settled in and had dinner ... read more

Again, we did a tour to get an overview of the city. Where America has their Duck Tours, Toronto has something similar called a Hippo Tour. Our hippo was called Henrietta Hippo and she could take us on both land and water. The water piece was a bit of a token gesture however - just around a marina, whilst we’d hoped it would go out to the Toronto Islands. One interesting fact we noted on the tour is that the State Parliament used to be a lunatic asylum. Umm… I can’t comment on the Canadian politicians, but I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere. The tour also mentioned "The PATH". This is an underground series of walkways linking major buildings, shopping centres and train stations across the centre of the city, under all the chaos ... read more

Tuesday August 22, on the road again this time heading east. As we were leaving Oregon we took a scenic road that parallels the highway and stumbled upon the most beautiful Multanomah waterfalls. There's a big visitor's center with a restaurant so we stopped for pictures and breakfast. It turns out this is the most visited tourist attraction in the entire state of Oregon. We got back on Interstate 84 that follows the Columbia River. This is the prettiest interstate highway and there are various stops with information about the Oregon Trail which passed close by. There are even areas where you can still see the wagon ruts. Passing through western Oregon once again it hits you just how big this country is and how much open space still remains in these areas. In other ... read more

Loved New York, even though the weather was rotten. Manhattan with its awesome art deco skyscrapers is out of this world. We only had 3 days in New York, arriving at JFK airport on the 18th August, we hopped on one of those classic yellow cabs to our hotel (Deauville), which was small, quaint and reasonably priced. Things we did in 3 days: Visited the UN building and took a guided tour round it; shopped in Macy's (the world's largest store) but didn't buy anything (I love doing that!); went inside the Chrsyler building (beautiful art deco building) and the Empire State Building; watched a street procession celebrating the Independence of India; I (Gerry) bought a new camera which is fantastic and cheap; took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (which used ... read more

Fun Ride in the Rain Wednesday, 22 August 2007 Another moving day. This time to Sudbury. I decided that I’d like to do at least a near-30 kilometre ride from the motel, up highway 557, which I’d explored a little bit on Monday, before we actually left Blind River. So once I had all of my stuff packed up, I left Bob and Panna to finish loading the van and took Blue for a run. It had been cloudy all morning and just began to rain softly as I departed. And despite the rain, it was one of the more enjoyable rides I’d had out here. The road was mildly hilly, with some curves, nice scenery and light on the traffic. I really would have liked to continue for more than 30 kilometres, but it eventually ... read more

Hello All! I figured it was time for an update. There is less than 15 days left before I fly out and I was thinking that I might recap the summer. I have about 2 weeks left of my summer internship at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria. It's been a great 3 months there. I've had a great time learning and experiencing all facets of the small museum. I even installed three exhibits! Other than the internship I've been working at the Geneva Beach Resort and the Viking motel. I've also been working at the Minnesouri Club, it's a lake club for a group of families and i've been taking care of their kids as a type of day counselor and babysitter. I basically spent the day acting like a 5 year old and playing on ... read more

Howdee folks howyal doin, the last entry made was from Southsea which seems a million miles away, in fact it probably is, since then we have made some considerable adjustments to our lifestyle. We have down sized from the relative luxury of our beloved van to carrying all our wordly goods in a couple of rucksacs and sleeping in the equivalent of a crisp packet. The transition from luxury to poverty, from UK to USA ,from pounds to dollars was fairly uneventful. The outward flight was delayed by 5 hours so added to a 10 hour flight made hard going. Eventually after reading everything to hand including guidebooks, newspapers, spanish dictionaries and flight safety cards together with games of eye spy and 'guess which air hostess I would most like to sit on my face' we arrived at ... read more

Greetings from Wyoming. First thing, I am Squirrel (I am also known as Susan). We are not finding many wi-fi options since we are not traveling on interstate or through big cities (unless unavoidable), so there may be long dry spells from communication with us which is I know is difficult for you all. Thus far Agnes is getting us through the nights and Cliff is getting us through the days (shout out to Lee, favorite nephew in-law for the nod on Big Agnes). We are having a swell time. I am posting two pics with this entry which is the travel trivia for this week. First, where were these two pictures taken? Bonus question: What drink do you get when you combine our favorite morning beverage with left-over wine? Remember to play the game and ... read more
