They call the stretch of land down the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula the Mayan Riviera. It is a great spot on the carribean sea with white sand beaches, the most amazingly blue sea bordered by jungle. Ben was dreading the thought of ´beach days´ but I really wanted to stop here and enjoy the coast. Our first stop was Tulum, and we picked up an overpriced cabaña on the beach. Cabaña sounds reasonably romantic, but it was little more than a concrete floor (some were just sand), some sticks for walls and a thatch roof. We walked in to find a crab had already claimed the room and it snapped at our toes before scuttling under the bed. The setting was superb. We were right on the beach and we could see tracks in ... read more

I really like Mexico City! I had heard so many dodge things about it and thought that it'd be really scary, but it's not at all! I don't feel any more scared here than I would in London. Obviously I'm not waving wads of dosh about or walking down dark alleyways, but I do feel quite safe here. It wasn't raining today, so that was a good start already. Having rewatched the film "Frida" before I set off, I decided that it would be appropriate to find out a bit more about Frida Kahlo and her on/off husband Diego Rivera. First I went to the house they shared which was used in the actual film. Lots of interesting artefacts and info inside. Then onto ´The Blue House´ where Frida grew up and died. Again, very interesting ... read more

Thursday 23rd August An early wake up enabled us to call our mothers before arriving at the main bus station an hour before our 10am departure. Another relaxing day sitting in a slow bus that stopped at almost every small village collecting passengers. We thought it was supposed to be an express but we think since there were so few passengers they combined the local bus and the express. We arrived in Acapulco about 6pm. The taxi driver insisted on taking us to his recommended hotel, so Judy stayed in the taxi while Rags checked it out. Needless to say we continued on until we arrived at the place we had selected the Etel Suites which turned out to be cleaner, bigger, cheaper and were high atop the hill overlooking old Acapulco. Once we depositied our ... read more

Thursday August 23, 2007 This morning we traveled to Teklineka Campground to stay for 3 days. There was blue sky and there were clouds so we didn’t know if we would see Mt. McKinley or not. We took our time traveling the 30 miles on Denali Road to the campground. We looked for wildlife, but didn’t see any. The animals are around you just have to be at the right place at the right time. We stopped frequently along the road so I could take photos of the changing colors of the tundra and for Frank to watch birds. We had given up on Mt. McKinley because of the clouds in the direction of the mountain. At one of our stops I scanned the horizon and I could actually see the south peak. At another stop ... read more

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007, 5:30am. Darrin awoke at dawn, and decided to set his canoe at the riverside before breakfast. As he was maneuvering the boat across a small ravine, a skunk popped out of the vegetation. Figuring that he smelled foul enough already, Darrin left the boat where it was, and quickly proceeded with breakfast. Seemingly noting Darrin’s submission, the black-and-white stripped-mammal wandered away without incident. Phew. Thus began a long and tiresome day of lining up, and portaging around, multiple ledges, rapids, and dams. Darrin portaged around East High Gate Dam, lined up a ledge just before Sheldon Springs Dam, and spent six miles pulling and paddling up swifts before reaching Enosburg Falls. (Lining is when a paddler stands on shore and uses a rope to carefully guide a boat through an up- or ... read more

My summer break in the U.S. has come and gone already, and it is now back to the suffocating heat and humidity of Japan. During the other seasons or when I am away from Japan I always think the summer can’t possibly be as miserably hot as I remember it. But, every time the summer rolls around here, I’m unfortunately proven wrong. But, instead of complaining about the weather here, let’s relive the memories of my relatively cool summer in the U.S. The trip began with a surprise at Narita International Airport in Tokyo. I had eaten breakfast that morning at 6am right before I left my apartment to make my first flight from Hiroshima to Tokyo. In Tokyo I had to catch an hour-long bus from the domestic airport to the international one. So, by ... read more

We drove through the Smoky Mountains and listened to some bluegrass music while taking in the sights…it’s all about the music!! On the way to Nashville we stopped in Lynchburg, TN to take a tour of the Jack Daniels factory. It was an hour long tour and 104 degrees out…very enjoyable ;) LOL We went to the charcoal kiln, the original office, the distillery room and the mellowing room and wandered through the grounds. We had fresh lemonade after the tour and Jared got a limited edition bottle of Jack Daniel’s. We walked around the town (which consisted of a ¼ mile radius of stores all selling Jack Daniel’s memorabilia) and got ice cream cones to snack on. From Lynchburg we headed over to Nashville. We checked in to the hotel at about 7 (it was ... read more

Hey All!!! My first proper blog entry since I started my trip. Enjoy! Got into Toronto on the 20th August. Had a delay on the flight so got in later but not too bad. The flight was ok, more leg room then I thought. Ended up sitting next to some nice old dears who seemed to like me coz I gave them my carrots and scone. Got in and got pulled by immigration! Had to go through 3 sets of people asking me questions and they were all pretty rude. Especially the 2nd guy. I was really worried but I made it through. No signs to the airport express bus, had to ask but got that and went to my hostel. The hostel is ok, pretty clean, fair sized room. I got a bottom bunk which ... read more

From the moment I stepped off the plane in Bangkok to the last call for passengers to board back to JFK, I never heard a single Thai, Laotian, or Cambodian complain much about anything. It’s not in their Buddhist nature to raise a ruckus. Of all people, Cambodians have the right to a long list of grievances and I would not deny them the opportunity to express them every hour of the day if they so chose. No country’s people have been screwed over more than the Cambodians and deserved it less. At no point have I seriously questioned my safety in Southeast Asia. Except for relentless touts, no one has followed me, threatened me, or attempted to hurt me in any way. In my country, I cannot walk around safely in my own state’s capital ... read more

North America » United States » Maine » Camden August 23rd 2007

We’ve been in Maine for a month now, and the more we see, the more we realize how much more there is to see. However the mornings are getting colder, there’s more north and stronger wind, so it’s time to start south. It gets dark now at 8:00pm The first week we were here our friends Mary and Christian took us on a general circuit around Penobscot Bay. Since then we’ve been to some incredible spots, and found a couple places we just keep going back to because they are so beautiful. There are several things that make Maine unique from anywhere else we’ve cruised. First the boats. On our last night here, I’m sitting in the cockpit of our boat in Rockland harbour. Looking out at the boats there are small traditional sailboats, Lobster boats, ... read more
