Planning Here are some of the details to give you a little bit of an idea of all of the planning that was involved for a trip like this and some of the costs that we’ve incurred along the way. Medications/Immunizations Love the Alberta Health Care system, they don’t cover the cost of vaccinations such as Hep A, Hep B, Meningococcus, Typhoid, TD Polio, Tetanus/Diptheria, Yellow fever, Rabies, Dukoral or the Flu vaccine, so in total we’ve spent about $3100 including the cost of the Malaria pills that we’ll be taking for almost the entire year we are gone. We’ve opted to take Larium as our Malaria pill of choice; we did a test run for a couple of weeks in June/July and figured the side effects weren’t too bad. The good thing about Larium, is ... read more

Wednesday August 22, 2007 Today we were out of bed before 5:00 am to get ready to catch the shuttle bus by 6:00 am. The day was cloudy but it wasn’t raining. The shuttle buses take visitors into the park to see the scenery and wildlife, since private vehicles aren’t allowed passed mile 15 unless you are staying at Teklineka Campground at mile 32. Limiting the number of vehicles keeps the area more “natural” for animals. They are habituated to the buses and often come close to them. I appreciate not having to worry about driving a gravel road while trying to look for wildlife. Another advantage is you have more eyes looking for animals. I’m not a good spotter. The buses have about 60 seats (a nice school bus). and you make reservations for the ... read more

We left Custer State Park, taking the Needles Scenic Highway Drive again, this time north. We drove up to Lead where we saw an open pit mine in the middle of the town. We drove through Deadwood which has a restored western town main street. Wild Bill Hickok was killed here in a saloon while playing poker. He is buried in Mt Moriah Cemetery. We then went to Sturgis to see where the motorcycles gather for bike week (we were there about a week after it ended) They were having a tractor parade on the main street - lucky us. We had lunch at Knuckles, a really cool biker’s bar. Then we headed for Wyoming. It has some rolling hills and we saw a couple of oil drilling machines and an open pit coal mine. It ... read more

North America » Mexico » Estado de Mexico » Teotihuacán August 22nd 2007

My hostel was running a trip to Teotihuacan (pronounced Tey-oh-tih-wacan) which is an ancient city with pyramids an hour north of Mexico City. However, I decided that to save money and to beat the crowds I'd make the journey myself. Tricky.....or so I though! I set my alarm early and work to find that it was raining outside- boo! I grabbed my umbrella but stupidly didn't bring my jumper (I assumed it would soon brighten up) and set off. After an hour on the metro and an hour on the bus I arrived at the site. It was still raining, but the plus was that it was absolutely empty! The site is set over 2km and I counted 12 people while I was there. Piramide del Sol is the world's 3rd largest Pyramid and I climbed ... read more

Ah, Sweet Home Alabama - our journey into the deep South. As we crossed the state border from Georgia it seemed as though time had stood still about 60 years ago and not in a good way. There are an interesting number of trailers and run-down houses dotted around with some hungry-looking horses hanging about but no real towns. We were beginning to be glad that we were only staying for 2 nights...... Our hotel was nice enough though and had a fridge (to keep the necessary alcohol) and a shower with a massaging head which is nice after lots of hours on the Greyhound bus. We ventured into Montgomery town to check out the sights - the bible that is our Lonely Planet guide had said you could do it all in an afternoon and ... read more

Today we went to pick up our awesome red Grand Prix (or Pricks as we’ve been calling it), and went to check in to our hotel. Our car has the sweetest navigation system, which has become VERY handy so far, so totally worth the extra 7 bucks a day we’re paying! Anyway, after checking in, Sammie, Frank & me headed out to Santa Cruz! It’s about an hour or so south of San Fran, and where Frank went to school. (UCSC) We had lunch at the cutest Italian deli, and then walked around the little town, making a few stops at the shops in between. Frank then took us to see the The Natural Bridges Beach, and the University, both were so awesome! We took the 1 north, (Pacific Coast Hwy) back to San Fran, and ... read more

Yesterday Dave and I went on a bus tour of the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. The day started out rough, we were to be picked up at 6:30 AM. After a late night at Margaritaville, I was tired. But the trip was great. We learned a lot of the Las Vegas area away from the strip, and then saw the Hoover Dam. The dam is about an hour away from Vegas and then we crossed the border into Arizona. It was a 4 hour drive to the grand canyon and we stopped a couple of times in these random towns in Arizona. We got to ride on Route 66 on the way there for a while. When we finally got to the South Rim, we had two stops for an hour a piece. All ... read more
