We’ll tell you more later in the blog about our plans to sell About Time, but for now I’ll give you an update on what we’ve been doing this winter and where we’ve been cruising. In December, after crossing to Nassau, from Miami, we spent a few days waiting for the right weather to sail down through the Exumas, to George Town. We stopped at Normans Cay, then at Staniel Cay where we met up with some friends, and stayed there for Christmas. As it happened we were headed for Blackpoint feeling a little “Blue” as we were going to have to spend Christmas by ourselves, without our family, and of course those adorable grandkids! As we passed Staniel Cay, another Canadian boat that we know Dejarlo, called us, and suggested we stop ... read more

As of today, it looks like the answer may be Nassau! We are currently sitting out a big blow at Nassau Harbor Club in Nassau Bahamas. This year we stayed home in Guelph until the end of November. I had a really great job this summer with my past employer Centennial Optical and we were really enjoying our house and just being home. By the end of October, the cold weather was settling in and the lure of warm weather, beautiful Bahamian waters, and the peaceful boat life motivated us to head south - like the birds! After visiting our friends the Huibers in North Carolina, and the Verlaques in St.Marys Georgia, we arrived at Fort Pierce Florida, where About Time safely sat out the summer and hurricane season. We left the boat further south this ... read more

In the last month we’ve taken the boat out of the water, (where we will store it for the summer) , driven back home to Guelph for a day, got on a plane to Malaysia, visited our Daughter Dawn and her family in Malaysia, spent 12 days in Bali with Dawn and the grandkids, flew to Thailand where we celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary, and now we are back home in Guelph. Wow! After living on the boat in the Bahamas, that’s quite a change of pace. Here’s a little more detail and some pictures of our incredible trip to South East Asia . It was triggered by our daughter Dawn and her family’s move to Malaysia for 2 years, and of course our missing them and craving to see our grandchildren, and…….as you know we ... read more

We find it hard to believe that the last entry to our Blog was December 2010 in Port Lucaya. So much has happened since then. The two big events were, I had a small stroke (totally recovered), and spent some time back in Canada, and the other event was we bought a houseboat in George Town Bahamas. Here’s a summary of our winter. We left Port Lucaya on December 15th, about 11:00am and sailed directly to Nassau. Our route took us from Lucaya to Great Stirrup Cay (Cruise Ship Island) down the Berry chain of Islands, then across to Nassau, arriving at daybreak the next morning. In Nassau we stayed at Harbor Central Marina until December 23rd, when our son Steven and his fiancée Audrey arrived. We moved over to Atlantis Marina ,and treated them to ... read more

Greetings Everyone from Port Lucaya Bahamas! We're back on the boat and looking forward to another great season of warm weather, great sailing, and friends! This year we left Guelph at the end of October, visited our friends Mary and Christian in St.Marys Georgia, and arrived at the boat in Port Canaveral October 26th. We decided to keep the boat further south last summer, and tried a convenient boatyard on Merrit Island just inside the lock at Port Canaveral. The boat yard Harbortown Marina is very conveniently located, and we were very pleased with the facility, and how well our boat rested there during the summer. It took a couple of days to get our boat ready to be launched, and we stayed at a nice Best Western out on the Beach at Cocoa Beach until ... read more

We are back in the US now after being in the Bahamas since Nov 18th. The boat has been hauled and is in dry storage at Merritt Island (Cape Canaveral). On Monday we will drive home to Guelph, and arrive about April 27th. Hopefully the boat will be safe and sound, until we return around November 1. In our previous blog, we had just arrived in the Abacos. Our first stop was in Little Harbour, where we enjoyed a fantastic dinner of fresh Mahi that we caught on route from Spanish Wells. After a walk on the beach in Little Harbour, a visit to Pete’s Pub, and the Johnston’s foundry, we started exploring the Abacos with our first stop Lynyard Cay. Still the weather was not real warm, so after a peaceful night at this great ... read more

Winter 2010 on About Time We realize we have been a little slow at sending out an update on our travels this winter. At first it seemed like there wasn’t a lot to tell about, but now as I sit to write about our winter, I realize that there is almost too much for one blog. The best way to summarize the winter is that it has been colder and windier, than we, long term cruisers, and even the fishermen can remember in a long time. Some weeks we had 2 or even 3 cold fronts pass over us. We have had much more west wind, and that makes for difficult anchoring, so we have spend much more time hiding from the fronts. I know that you don’t have much sympathy for us as we hear ... read more

It’s almost the end of January, and we feel like we are just getting started on our winter cruising. About Time, our Beneteau First 405 has spent more time at dock this year than other years, and we have certainly enjoyed the amenities that dock life offers. Water , electricity, cable tv , swimming pools, hot tubs, have been nice, but the trip down to Exuma reinforces that this is what we like best! Yes….. Winter again in Paradise! We spent 2 really nice months at the Ocean Reef Yacht Club and Resort, in Port Lucaya, Freeport this year, starting Nov 18th. Some cruising friends had recommended the Ocean Reef as a very nice, safe place to stay at dock, and within our budget. It proved to be all of that, plus we met some ... read more

Spending 6 winter months down south on the boat, and 6 summer months at home in Guelph seems to be working well, and so here we are looking forward to our 3rd winter of retirement on the boat. This summer our family grew again, with our second grandchild, Gavin Jeffrey Nicholson being born September 24th. As all of you know that have experienced being grandparents, another grandchild is an incredible experience, and so much joy to look forward to. This year I left earlier than Sharon for the boat, leaving October 13th, visiting our friends Ron and Jenny Huibers in Chalotte NC, and arriving at the boat October 14th. Sharon flew down a week later, giving her another week to help Dawn with Ella, and Gavin. We kept the boat again this summer in St.Marys Georgia. ... read more

Without a doubt, this has been one windy winter in the Bahamas! We are currently waiting for weather to start north, and hopefully will start heading up the Exumas tomorrow, with a goal of getting back to St.Marys Georgia about the middle of April. We plan to leave the boat again this year in St.Marys, and spend the summer home in Guelph. In addition to it being windy, it has been cold. We’re not complaining as we know it’s been pretty harsh up north, and certainly the weather has been much more pleasant here. Since we last wrote, we have been hanging out in Georgetown. March is an exciting time to be in Georgetown . This year there were approximately 300 boats here by the time regatta started. When you look at the pictures attached, you’ll ... read more
