Ok, for my dedicated readers back in the Nolalu/Kakabeka/Thunder Bay region who have not stopped checking my blog since I stopped writing... here's a long awaited update. R and I are sufficiently settled into our new home and are loving it. The location is ideal, there is ample room, and we no longer have to trek our dirty laundry to the laundromat. We have a kitchen table and an office, and a huge bathroom... You could fit about four of our Ireland apartments in here. Anyway, check out the photos for a look at our sweet digs. In other news I am now working at CSV architects (www.csv.ca) which is great so far. I will be working there until the end of the summer, so almost one full year. Next semester I have two classes per ... read more

Hello readers! After 8 months of travelling I am finally home in Kakabeka. I was planning a final series of pictures, but got too busy packing and moving and finishing up work. I got a large selection of photos printed yesterday however and have arranged them all in albums which I am in the process of labelling. Sooo... if you want to see more of my trip you are welcome to come over for a visit and check them out. I'm now relaxing, enjoying the Canadian sunshine, and looking for a job in Ottawa for the fall. Next Friday I'll be headed to Ottawa to unpack my bags for good (at least a year). It will be nice to be settled and be able to spread out again. Maybe I'll continue the blog on my next ... read more

Hey everyone... I just logged on to travelblog to find that they had some server problems and lost a bunch of blog entries. Hopefully they can restore them, but if not, I hope you've read them all already. Anyway, I was unusually busy last month and the days have just flown by. I will try to condense my July travels into one blog entry. July started off with Canada Day of course. We had tickets to a Hurling match at the famous Croke Park that day so we went to see the match and learn the rules of hurling. Afterward we went to an Australian bar called the Wool Shed where we had Moosehead beer and Poutine...mmm... They were playing only Canadian music so we rocked out to Bryan Adams and Sam Roberts, etc. Two weekends ... read more

Quick pics from our trip to Belfast and the Giant's Causeway. It was a whirlwind tour accomplished in one very quick weekend. Our tour bus driver was from Northern Ireland and I am now officially adept at telling the difference between Northern Irish and Irish accents. From near the Causeway you can see across the water to Scotland very faintly in the distance and we are now feeling the tug to head that way for our next trip. Dublin so far has been rainy rainy rainy. Of the 40 days I've been here only 3 have been without rain. I'm starting to feel like I should start building an ark to sail home on. On that note, I just booked my flight home so I will be in Thunder Bay for two weeks at the ... read more

Well hello hello. Finally catching up with these blogs and hopefully this one will get me right up to speed. I arrived in Ireland laden with bags and walked directly into the welcoming door of my own home. It was such a relief that Richard had gotten everything arranged for our new place and had it all ready for my arrival. We have a tiny little 'bedsit' apartment about a half hour walk from work and downtown. Despite it's small size we are happy to have a clean warm place which is very conveniently located and are still laughing every night as we elbow our way into the twin bed. When the laughing stops it will be time to move to a bigger place but hopefully by then we'll be on our way back to ... read more

Arrived abruptly in Oslo at 6:30am one morning from Stockholm and got the first train out toward Bergen. I was sick of cities and ready to do some real sightseeing in the Fjords of Norway. I got off about an hour east of Bergen in a little town called Voss which I had picked out semi-randomly from a list of train stops. It turned out to be a very good choice as the other town I was debating stopping in was in the middle of a full-fledged snowstorm when our train arrived and I had already sent my boots and coats back to Canada. I had an itch to do some hiking in the mountains and kept asking around until I found someone with a map of potential hiking trails. I spent my first evening ... read more

Short on time at this internet cafe so here's a synopsis... Took the ferry across the sea from Turku to Stockholm right after the exhibition opening. I had a bunk to myself right next to the engine room under the car decks, but it only cost me 10 euro! Taking the ferry was a great move and I arrived in Stockholm just in time for a 7am breakfast! I spent three days in Sweden before moving on to Norway... highlights included the amazing Woodland Cemetery with chapel by Gunnar Asplund. I stayed two nights in a smaller town called Uppsala just north of Stockholm as it was the only hostel I could find in Sweden. It turned out to be a great place as I got to see some viking burial mounds at Gama Uppsala ... read more

Turku Triumph Europe » Finland » Turku By jessie_elicia May 24th 2007 Jessie Smith Hey everyone! Sorry for the long delay in writing. I have been busy finishing the pavilion, moving it to Turku, attending the gallery opening, travelling across Scandinavia, moving to Ireland, and starting a new job. Whew. So here's the first bit, the finished pavilion in all its glory, standing triumphantly in Turku for the next three months with an uncertain future beyond that. The erection went fairly smoothly and the press conference was a breeze. It was a very exciting day seeing the opening of the exhibition... here is a small selection of the hundreds I have.... o... read more

Veni, Vidi, Vici Europe » Finland » Helsinki By jessie_elicia May 23rd 2007 Jessie Smith Last night in Finland! It went by so fast, I feel like I just got here yesterday but really I've been here almost 5 months now. My new plan is to take the train tomorrow morning to Turku for a press conference at 1 and gallery opening at 6. After that I'll hop on the ferry headed for Stockholm and arrive the next morning ready to be a tourist again. I have a week to travel through Sweden and Norway before flying from Oslo to Dublin. I start my new job on the 5th of May! Yikes, so much going on in the next two weeks. Things I'll miss most about Finland: -wildern... read more

Two full weeks of construction and we are now done! I am physically and mentally exhausted and ready for a weekend off but I'm also really happy about how the project turned out. The space feels the same as I had imagined it but the lighting is more spectacular. We packed the two pieces onto two trucks on Tuesday morning and drove them to Turku asap. We worked from about 12 - 9 and were almost done when we went home for dinner. We had a great italian meal at an amazing restaurant and then went out dancing to celebrate. It was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders that night seeing the structure in place. Wednesday morning we finished up the work in Turku and headed back to Helsinki. We are now ... read more
