Another vacation has ended for us, and we're making the inevitably grueling drive home. When you're on the road headed for a weekend away, the drive seems less taxing. You're going toward something, you have an enjoyable goal, and you're fresh with excitement and energy. But when the fun is over and it's time to hit the road for home, the feeling is entirely different. Every mile seems to take an hour, every driver is exponentially more annoying, and even road food doesn't taste nearly as good and you find yourself thinking about the normal food at home. Lucky for me, we're driving through the Bible belt of South Carolina. I noticed this area on the way down, but knew to look for it this time. There's a church at every mile marker and either the ... read more

Today I learned what Myrtle Beach is actually about. Relaxation and cheese! We woke up around noon to a slightly overcast day, and Jerry of course assumed automatically that since it was so late, we will make it nowhere. I'm still trying to figure out if that was a ploy to get me up and moving, or if he really thought I was going to lie in bed all day. I was determined not to waste another vacation in another city to my own inability to get up and moving. I was showered and ready to go in a flash, and dragged poor Jerry out the door. Food was, of course, the first stop of the day, and a vacation to a tourist town isn't complete without a trip to the Hard Rock. We have one ... read more

This morning began in a panic. After lazily rolling over and cuddling up with my nice warm husband, snuggling further under the covers, Jerry decided to look at the time. We slept all the way through checkout! In a flurry of toothbrushes and suitcases, we ran at top speed to get out the door. Luckily they didn't actually care that we kept the room for 15 extra minutes, and we headed down the road. Today was interesting in Myrtle Beach. We rather willingly got sucked into a timeshare presentation for some free show tickets, and ended up actually buying one! Aren't we posh, with our fancy shmancy timeshare? Let's be honest: not even the largest timeshare they offered would have come close to how much we actually travel. So we bought the smallest one that lets ... read more

Here we are again, on the road headed for another fabulous weekend vacation! I'm once more on my tiny new computer, learning how to type anew. It's one thing to have to adjust to the miniature keys. It's quite another to try and compensate for the bumps in the road as we drive along. I woke up earlier than usual this morning and headed to the gym. I've been keeping up so good that I don't want to lose momentum, and decided a little gym time would be beneficial in counteracting the travel food diet I so dearly love. And my wonderful husband hasn't failed me! We just made our first McDonald's stop, and I'm so full of French fries I could burst! There's no other feeling in the world compared to being overstuffed, grease flowing ... read more

Today Jerry and I got a lesson about progress. It was Ikea day in our household, meaning a trip to Maryland through DC. Not normally frightening on the weekend, as you aren't fighting with the whole of the district for your few feet of space on the road. After finding a coveted parking spot in the Ikea lot, we headed into the insanity. We had three main things on our list: bookshelf, shoe storage, hangers. We did manage to find the bookshelf that matches the one we already have, but when we headed off to find the nice shoe storage and hangers, they weren't there!! Well, I mean, there were other hangers and other shoe storages, but not mine. In a couple of months, they've gotten rid of those styles. CRAP! I figured out a solution, ... read more

My wonderful husband bought me that pretty camera and that pretty new computer so I could keep my travel journal up to date, and what do I do? Completely space and decide that I'm too lazy and busy to blog on myspace or my travel journal. And in truth, I've been sleeping for the past week. It hasn't been pretty at all. Graduation went fine, our nephew is a Marine! He matriculated to VMI last weekend, and we'll probably go visit him soon. We're planning on going to one of the football games shortly. We spent the rest of Friday lounging around the hotel, eating and being lazy. It's on of those things you can only do on vacation, because if you try and be that lazy at home, something will inevitably come up. Saturday we ... read more

We drove to Parris Island today, and spent time with our nephew for family day. Being there, amongst all those recruits, it was surreal. There's no other way to describe it. Batallions drilling, soon to be graduates walking proud and tall, moms fussing, girlfriends completely starry eyed. And tomorrow will be even more fun, as my husband is showing up in his Class A's. There will be pictures of my gorgeous man when I blog, I promise. Yum. I have tons to say, but I'm in the process of editing it at the moment. I am slightly afraid of offending a few people I respect and hold dear, and I'm making sure what I write won't do that. However, it will eventually get said in time. Hm. Jerry kicks ass, I want you all to know ... read more

We drove from Fayetteville to Charleston this afternoon, and we are in probably the prettiest Holiday Inn I've ever seen. Jerry and I always get a suite because I'm not sure we could live without a mini-fridge. The room is huge, the bed is so comfortable, and the staff is so nice! We had the absolute most wonderful time. First up was exploring Ft. Moultrie. You have to understand something. My husband, the historian, had never been here. And still knew everything about the old fort. Another Civil War site down! Tonight we went to the aquarium to watch the fireworks. We had plenty of time, saved our spot on the steps overlooking the water (eventually had to battle a group of 10 people for our spot, seriously, lady, if you're "saving" the spot maybe ... read more

Yesterday was probably one of the most fun days Jerry and I have had living here. Not that living here isn't fun in itself, but we chose to get out of town a little bit. We were like all the other DC residents who escape from the rat race for the weekend and headed west. Of course, our goals tend to be quite different. First we went geocaching in an old park. Yes, Kelli, I blame you for this addiction, because when you mentioned it and I had no idea what you were talking about, I had to research it. At which point I bought a pretty yellow GPS and went at it. And just so no one else has to go researching it, geocaching is like a high tech scavenger hunt. You get a set ... read more

For those who don't know me well, I'm addicted to the idea of travel. Not so much traveling itself, but planning and reading about exotic places. I'm even starting classes this fall to get my travel and tourism certification. Do I need it? Will I ever use it? Nope. Except to plan my own travel and maybe learn how to get someone who speaks English on the phone at the port authority in Puerto Rico. My husband's favorite place is Barnes and Noble. Or Books A Million. Or pick any bookstore chain that discounts. And everytime he goes, I am inevitably dragged along, kicking and screaming. But I buy at least 4 books to his every 1. And the last couple of days I've been burying myself in my travel books: Puerto Rico, Florida Keys, Charleston, ... read more
