Recently I received a card that read: the world is your oyster--that said, I am ready to experience what the world has to offer, and offer myself to the world. So far on my journeys I have lost and found myself a few times, had many a mishap, realized the value of language, and relished in the power of a smile.

One can be fairly confident that she has chosen an ideal travel destination to escape the stresses of helping open a school when she asks the coffee shop owner for the wifi password and the response is, “happy.” My school runs on unique breaks, so I have been plotting a Southeast Asia adventure in January for some time. As though the break wasn’t enough good fortune, a travel partner appeared in a fellow teacher! We narrowed our sights to Thailand and Vietnam for three weeks and decided to just have a light sketch of a plan to allow for in the moment decisions. After many hours on an airplane, we stepped out into the humidity of Bangkok. This was my second time to the city, so I was ready for the clogged traffic, plentiful street food, ... read more

What a hot summer! Colorado is burning up in temperature and in fires! It seemed like a great time to hit the road and finish my continental US states! I roped a friend intohitting my forty seventh and eighth states- North Dakota and Montana. The “concession” from my end was time in Yellowstone on the way back. Though I had visited Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last year, I knew that there was plenty more there to explore, so we sketched out a trip and threw our camping gear in the trunk. A long stretch of road lay ahead as we headed out on Friday afternoon. We passed the Ft. Collins fire, choking on the smoke and feeling for all of those who have lived in that for weeks. As we crossed into South Dakota, we stumbled ... read more

Nine years ago while paging through my art history textbook, I came across a photo of the interior of the Hagia Sophia. That image and the desire to see that building in person stayed with me and fueled my desire to find the right time to visit Istanbul. At last that time came! As I imagined Istanbul, the vibrancy of Morocco with the call to prayer and bustling markets came to mind. As I buckled down to do some research, that image shifted as I incorporated a more western feel into what I anticipated. As we set off from the hostel our first night to find some dinner, Winnie and I both remarked on how quiet and calm the city felt- no honking horns, loud people, or blaring music. The sense of calm crept into us in ... read more

The day that I learned that I was hired on at a school for the fall, I called my travel partner Winnie to see if I could convince her to host me in Paris for a few weeks and then slip of to Istanbul for a bit. Lucky for me, she was not hard to convince and we shared another incredible adventure together. Waiting to board the plane in Minneapolis proved a great start to the trip. People were excited to go to Paris! They were paging through their tour guides, talking loudly about plans, and were not trying to contain their giddiness. It was infectious! Appreciating people's exuberance spilled over into my time in Paris. I did not grumble as I needed to dodge a group of tourists gawking at the Louvre or recover from ... read more

Costa Rica proved to be yet another fantastic adventure to round out the travels of 2011! We Foxes felt very fortunate as we dragged our feet onto the red-eye flight down to San José. I was ready for another chance to practice my burgeoning Spanish skills, but mostly I was hoping to see some really impressive new ecosystems! On both accounts, I was not disappointed, and we experienced more than I could have dreamed! Our day began early in San José as we made our way on foot from our hotel along the central avenue of Paseo Colon. While we enjoyed watching the city wake up and seeing people enjoying their Sunday morning routines, the city itself did little to capture us. The architecture mainly dates from the mid-twentieth century, and did little to inspire us. ... read more

I am the most daunted that I can remember by writing a travel blog about my parents’ and my week in Cuba. The decision to go came about five months ago, and when I think of why we decided to go, for me it was mostly curiosity about the people, a keen interest to see the dancing and hear the music, and wanting an adventure. My knowledge of Cuba when we signed up to go was limited strictly to the following: Cuba is communist, they have a dictator named Fidel Castro, who is sick, and his brother Raul is now in power, we have an embargo against them- the details on that topic were fuzzy, we had an embarrassing failed attack on them at the Bay of Pigs, then there was that missile crisis business, but ... read more

Back in the saddle again! Arriving in Mexico felt rather second nature in some respects, but then again, the difference from home abound! As we unpacked our suitcases in Cuernavaca, the birds squawked, the geckos.. I do not know what that sound would be called, the neighbor swept, the gas truck went by sounding its siren like an ice cream truck, someone called out what sounded like “mmles,” which turned out to be the tamale man. Then of course the smells coming from the kitchen were different as a spicy roasted chili smell greeted us. It felt great to be back, but where did I leave my Spanish? Travelers from Italy, the United States, Australia, and who knows where else, have been encouraged to not visit Cuernavaca, I can guess due to the drug conflicts, though ... read more

(To see all 64 pictures, you just need to click on one and you can scroll through!) Iceland! Wow! What a trip! My mom and I seized the chance to do some traveling during my employment gap, and a knitting tour to Iceland seemed like the right move! We went with a group called Knitting Iceland run by a fantastic woman named Ragga. Getting enough of her, knitting, nature, food, Reykjavik, geothermal pools, horses, sheep, crazy weather, and creativity was impossible! The airport is located about forty minutes from Reykjavik so right off the bat we were able to get a taste of the incredible landscape through our sleepy eyes. One part of the drive is through a lava field which is covered in lush green moss, while other moments offered views of a rather stormy ... read more

July brought the perfect opportunity to head to Mexico for a five-week adventure!! My mom and I started our time together in Mexico City with a visit to the Templo Mayor to see the ruins of Tenochtitlan, which are kept in fantastic repair and rather well explained. The accompanying museum was also helpful and filled with impressive artifacts that we were all too happy to explore. We also took in the Museum of Anthropology, which is massive and awesome! The museum is divided into various regions of Mexico and has two floors within each section. The lower floor has ancient artifacts- including the Aztec Sun Stone- while the upstairs floor explored more recent history and cultures of the regions- we gravitated to the upper floor. To change our pace we moved from our hotel in the ... read more

Again, the perks of being a teacher come in handy! A few of my friends from work and I decided at our holiday party back in December, that a trip to Spain for break might be just what we needed in the middle of the spring semester! A very good decision I must say! So, a fellow special education teacher, Amy, a Global History teacher, Lena, a Spanish teacher, Melissa, the dean, Emilio, and I all put our heads together and came up with an itinerary for our 10 day vacation. We tried hard to get Barcelona into our schedule, but it just refused to fit in comfortably. All the same, what we came up with was extraordinary, and now there is someplace to visit another year! It felt like the trip was going to be ... read more
