What a week! I have been all about and have had little time to catch up on emails or even get to my homework! This means that I have been busy doing other things. The latest news: my big toenail fell off. Too much information? All I know is it hurts. I hope it grows back sometime. Now, on to the more interesting stuff! I had two meetings with my adopted French parents, Leopold and Colette this last week. The first was tea and a conversation about the CPE (the law that is causing all the protests in Paris right now). It was great getting their perspectives on the events. It was especially funny because Colette declared that the Prime Minister, Villepin, would be out of a job in two weeks (she was upset by this ... read more

Ah, life in Paris is getting better every day! The sun is shining for the entire day and my winter coat is too hot! Hooray! I have been up to many things since I last wrote. Classes are going very well, perhaps I say this because I haven’t had to turn in any work yet, but nonetheless I am very optimistic that the work will all get done somehow. Maybe you avid readers recall that I have developed a relationship with a sixty five year old French couple. I stumbled into their lives because my family rented their apartment over Christmas. At any rate, they have had me over for innumerable meals, all lavish, and teas, all complete with a snack, and we spend an hour speaking in French and an hour speaking in English. They ... read more

February 27th 2006

Greetings! Well, it is February the 27th and I am now 21 and one day. Hooray! The day was wonderful. Here come the updates! School: Classes began last week and are going very well. I worked it out so I have a great schedule time wise (Fridays off!) and four wonderful courses. Sexuality and Difference: this is taught by a Portuguese man who is by far the most difficult for me to understand, but the readings and subject matter are very interesting so I imagine I’ll understand him more and more as I become familiar with the material. Writing: I have the same professor as last semester, the one who reminds me of a fairy godmother in that all is well when I am in her presence. French Painting of the 20th Century: a continuation of ... read more

HELLO! It has been far too long and I am very sorry. That just means I have much to fill you all in on. It also means I will most likely just skim over a lot of the past few weeks and make some sweeping generalizations. At any rate, here we go! December, the good, the bad, and the wonderful Schoolwork was in abundance before our winter break but I made it! I wrote many a paper and even did a few oral presentations. I wish I could say my French was amazing but…. I went to the doctor in order to get my Student Visa to stay in France and had quite an experience! First of all it was bizarre being herded like cattle from one room to the next with complete strangers in a ... read more

Well life in Paris continues on quite splendidly. I had a “midterm” last week along with a paper and other work that seem to be piling up on me. From time to time this becomes too overwhelming and I don’t know what to do so I go see movies. I saw “Harry Potter” again on opening night here, which was quite a thrill! The theater was huge and on the Champs Elysées. The Champs Elysées is all decorated right now and every tree is strung with lights and so that in and of its self was great. And then the movie was even better with French subtitles! It was funny to watch and hear the French people respond to the French characters who are in this movie. They all clapped and whooped and hollered when it ... read more

Well when the opportunity arose for me to join my friends in Athens for Thanksgiving I of course jumped at the chance! Abby is studying there for the semester and Amelia, coming from Rome, Ali, coming from Amsterdam, and I all converged upon her and her fair city for four glorious days of fun. It was a very mellow adventure full of long chats and exploring the city, oh, and the food, how could I forget the food! Thursday was spent traveling to Athens and inside because of rain and wind but we ate our first gyros and Greek salad so the night was far from a waste. Not quite the usual Thanksgiving feast but I was warmed by being with my good friends and found myself at home in a very foreign place. Friday we ... read more

It has been a while huh? I guess I got lost and caught up in schoolwork, (of which there has been plenty) so here goes! My flatmate had her birthday a few weeks ago and invited Winnie and I to her birthday party, which was such a great time. Chantal actually cooked and since then has been bitten by the cooking bug-I have certainly benefited from her change of heart! The party was another good opportunity to speak French and fun to see how birthdays work here. Women still don’t age more than 27 years old here, too! Strange. Of course I made Chantal a scarf as her birthday gift and she has been wearing it daily so it must be the right color! We had Armitance Day off so Winnie and I wandered about and ... read more

Well I suppose those of you who read the news deserve some word from this end of the world. I don’t really know what to say. If you really want to understand the underlying psychology and attitudes, I suggest you rent La Haine, or HATE. I’ve seen it in Blockbusters and independent movie stores. I couldn’t believe when I read this in the New York Times: "This is just the beginning," said Moussa Diallo, 22, a tall, unemployed French-African man in Clichy-sous-Bois, the working-class Parisian suburb where the violence started Oct. 27. "It's not going to end until there are two policemen dead." New York Times, Craig S. Smith, published: November 7, 2005 There seems to be a very tit-for-tat mentality that was represented very well in that film. I warn that the film is ... read more

Alrighty, I have spent the last week a bit melancholic and not quite living up to my seize the moment philosophy and suddenly realized it was time to delete Edith Piaf from my iPod and temporarily hide some Billie Holiday songs in my iTunes. This grand gesture of cutting the dangerously sad music out of my repertoire seems to have done something so I look forward to another day with adventure ahead of me. I know I left you all hanging on my issue with needing a Sorbonne course for far too long, never fear the resolution is here! I had only two options it seemed for my course at the Sorbonne so off I went last Thursday night bracing myself for 5 hours of French university courses…..yikes. Course number one was the Poetry of Comedy. ... read more

My my my, what a week this has been. I have been on many adventures and have had some major changes to my agenda! Here goes. Having my guest, dearest Amelia, for the weekend was wonderful! She arrived into my metro station at 12 on Thursday night and the fun began. It was a bit of a squeeze because a friend of hers needed a place to stay so my hard wood floor was the best option for her, bummer! Friday classes ran over so I met them at the Musée d’Orsay and then we ate too much lunch and then bided our time until the Louvre was free for students and went and enjoyed the museum for a few hours. Then came a yummy dinner in my area. Saturday we jumped up to go to ... read more
