Got back from a trip to South Dakota late last evening. On the agenda was a stayover in Pierre, SD where I had a couple hours to drive around the city. I have been to Pierre several times but it's been a year since my last visit. The town is experiencing a little bit of a building boom with some new retail and housing being built. For a capitol city, it's a small city (about 14,000); however, it is extremely pretty. According to wikipedia, Pierre is one of only 5 state capitols which is not served by an interstate highway system and it is about a half hour from the interstate.

There are lots of open areas on the Capitol grounds with various state building located around it. Several memorials, statues and fountains make up the grounds as well. There are also walking paths all around. As I said, it feels very much like a college campus.

The South Dakota Capitol grounds have a small lake located on them and beautiful campus like grounds. Several statues and memorials also make up the grounds. The Capitol is the classic dome design. Pierre is also located on the Missouri River and takes advantage of several parks and piers throughout the city.

Pierre also has a driving tour of their historical homes that next time I hope to see. It was a nice little overnight stop.
