Sometimes myself and my friends (who do NOT wish to be included in my travel journalism) will take shopping trips around the city and have fun buying things that we think can sell for more money on eBay. Its a game. The rules are simple. We each have $50 maximum budget and one month to turn a profit. In this time we are expressly forbidden to promote our sales on our own social networks, like for example my travel blog, as the game is not about how many friends you have, but whether or not you can use your knowledge of antiques to pick the best items and turn a profit on your purchases in an online auction websites. Hence you will se no links to my eBay store or any sales here. The key to success ... read more

The Toronto Christmas Market runs from Dec 2nd to the 18th every year, and is filled with seasonal attractions including live reindeer, troops of singing Christmas carolers, elves making toys and over one hundred vendors and food merchants and mulled wine dispensaries. Santa is here and a tall Christmas tree, there is also a merry-go-round and a Ferris wheel attraction too. But more, the magic happens in the air. There is soft gentle holiday music coming from audio speakers and the sounds and smells of the season echo about the red brick courtyard and Victorian age buildings. Christmas is in the air here. Some backstory on the venue- this historic place has been preserved like a museum and that alone is worthy of a travelblog post. The Christmas Market is now permanently fixed at the url=http://www.thedistillerydistric ... read more

The Days of the Dead

At first glance, Mexico's Days of the Dead celebrations (which fall on November 1st and 2nd annually) seem like a different take on Halloween. There are people in costume, and they seem to be connecting with the shadow side of life dressed in costumes like skeletons (calaveras) or devils (diablos). Besides these basic similarities, however, the two holidays couldn't be more different. On my first trip to Mexico I was struck by the unaffected attitude the Mexicans have towards death. First of all, this is not a country that seems overly concerned with health and/or safety. There's no Public Health Board stepping into every restaurant or checking up on food vendors to make sure that the food is property handled. You're expected to jump on and off moving buses if you're a strapping young man like ... read more

We went to Iceland for a reason - to meet Viking girls. We were in Iceland in early July 2010. We went there to meet beautiful Nordic women with long blond hair and blue eyes. We were four lonely Canadian boys... on a mission to meet Icelandic women, and to toast our best friend, who is getting married in a few weeks. It was around 4pm Iceland time when our flight landed at Keflavik international Airport after which our quartet was promptly shuttled to Reykjavik by minibus. That sunny afternoon, downtown Reykjavik was a balmy 10 degrees and quite busy with tourists. we moved hotels and visited The Blue Lagoon and went for a swim in the milky blue water while they sorted it all out. Our bandleader was is a business voip s... read more

Wildcrafting is the evil twin brother of agroforestry. What that means is that while the word agroforestry communicates a sense of intelligent design in the efficient cultivation of forest products, the word wildcrafting implies trespassing and thieving away natural occurring commodities from an absentee landowner, and nature. The types of all natural material commonly sold on eBay include driftwood, flowers, feathers, mosses, mushrooms, ferns, grains, quills, clay, wicker, burls, seaweed, nuts, herbs, dried berries, seeds, cones, bark, saps, roots, rocks, fossils, shells, dye, antlers, leather, teeth, fur, bones especially skulls. Wildcrafting at its worst is definitely not cool, because if everyone was a ‘nature merchant’ we wouldn’t have much wild country to admire. But then again, if that were the case, the demand for natural products would plummet… right now our civil... read more

On August 17th my friends and I watched Somebeachsomewhere make history at Confederation Cup XXXII, at Flamboro Downs, just outside of Hamilton Ontario. Of course we had to park a half mile away from the Grandstand as we were late arriving (at about 12:30 pm) on Sunday August 17th, 2008 - but we soon got inside the air conditioned venue with plenty of time to place our bets on the Confederation Cup XXXII Final! More on that later. My date went to find a decent hotdog and a better program for a souvenir, and I bought a cold drink and retired to the bleechers - it was actually hard to find a spot for once. The Grandstand was packed - this is how harness racing should be (used to be). You know the focus of this ... read more

On Weds June 25th, 2008 there was live thoroughbred racing at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto Ontario. Because of an ongoing labor dispute between the casino security workers and the Ontario Lotteries and Gaming Commission, which has established a picket line at the gate, the evening was very poorly attended. My group sat together quietly making bets and perusing the menu in the final minutes before the first race. At 6:30 pm we had hurried upstairs to the popular Champions patio desperate to get what we assumed would be the last available outdoor seating... only to discover the well appointed patio completely deserted. Lately I've been playing a weird harness racing flash game and I've been so totally yearning to go to the Woodbine racetrack; I think I... read more

Although I generally dislike foreign films, a good story makes subtitles disappear. Mongol is every bit as good as, and perhaps better than most Hollywood historical epics. Yesterday I watched Mongol in a sneak peek screening that I won free passes for at the Varsity Theater in the back of the Manulife building at Bay and Bloor in downtown Toronto. This is probably the only place in Toronto where this movie is playing right now; its in 'select theaters' only until June 22nd, 2008. Mongol is an absolutely stunning historical epic by Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov. The unforgettable story relates the most dramatic events in the life of the legendary warrior hero Genghis Khan. This be... read more
