On Monday 20th Sal and I went for a walk to the front entrance of Lewes River Farm which was about 4.6km there and back. Sal then went for a run while I had a shower and packed my bags. Martha took us into Whitehorse where we ate lunch at Tim Hortons which is a coffee-and-doughnut fast food restaurant chain largely based in Canada. They have freshly made wraps, soup and sandwiches at good prices so we enjoyed our meal. I felt sad saying goodbye to Sal and Martha, we had a wonderful trip together. Lori picked me up at Vancouver Airport. Lori and Ted had 90th Birthday Party for Lori's Dad on the Sunday so we had a great meal from the left overs. On Tuesday I went for a ride to second beach at ... read more

On Wednesday August 15th Martha, Sally and I drove to Kluane. It was perfect weather for the scenic drive. We stopped at Haines Junction Visitors Centre where we saw a presentation about Kluane National Park. We went to the bakery and bought smoked salmon bagels for dinner and some things for a picnic lunch the following day. We arrived at Kluane Cabins Bed and Breakfast at about 6-30pm and enjoyed our bagels with a view of Kluane Lake. After dinner we went to the Kluane Research Station where we had a drink with Lyn and David. Alice was out for dinner at Haines Junction so we arranged to see her the following morning. On Thursday Cecile prepared us a delicious breakfast for us including some huge hot cakes. After chatting to Alice, Lyn and David we ... read more

After arriving at Skagway on August 13th we got a lift from the airport to the Skagway Hostel. We dropped off our luggage and strolled around town. There were 3 large cruise ships at Skagway so there were lots of tourists in town! We found a good restaurant near the wharf where we ate halibut burgers. After that we saw the "Days of '98 show" about Soapy Smith who was a con man in the early gold rush days of Skagway. The next day we got up early to catch the 8 am train up the White Pass. We had fantastic views and there was a good commentary telling us all about the gold rush days and points of interest. At Fraser in British Columbia we caught a bus. The bus got to Whitehorse at 1pm ... read more

On Friday 10th Lori dropped us off at the Greyhound bus terminal in downtown Vancouver. She had kindly provided us with a packed lunch for our journey south to Bellingham. Crossing the border from Bellingham to Washington State took a very long time because everyone had to get their luggage off the bus and go through customs. Our bus driver said we were very lucky it took only an hour, it can take up to 6 hours! We arrived at Bellingham at 3pm (was meant to be 1-20pm!) but still in plenty of time for our 6pm departure on the ferry M V Columbia which was to take us up the inside passage to Skagway. There was no queue at the ferry, we walked straight on and up to the solarium where we got 2 sun ... read more

On Sunday 5th August we got up at 3-30am to get a taxi to the JFK airport in New York for our 6 hour flight to Vancouver. Appropriately our taxi was a Cadillac! The flight left on time at 7.20am. Lori met us at Vancouver airport. It was great to see Lori, Ted, Nicky and Alex again. When we lived in Vancouver Sally & Nicky were in grade 1 at General Gordan School together and Rohan and Alex went to the Kitsilano Preschool together. After unpacking we walked along the beach. Vancouver is a beautiful city with a lovely harbour with beautiful mountains to the north. We enjoyed visiting where we used to live in 7th Avenue plus all our favourite places including: Granville Island which has a lot of art and craft stores and a ... read more

NYC was fun! We were very spontaneous! We were a bit overwhelmed by all the big buildings and crowds the first day (Thursday), but we bought last minute tickets to see the musical RENT - a great one to see in NYC because it is set there and we were lucky because two of the original cast members were in the two lead roles - they had only just re-joined the cast the week before!!! So that was a really interesting musical to see in New York - very gutsy and set in the late 1990s. On Saturday afternoon we went and saw the matinee performance of WICKED - a newish musical (2003) about the witches from the Wizard of Oz - it was great! We also did lots of walking, and Sal got some lovely ... read more

At Paris airport on 27th July the queue for our flight to Philadelphia was huge. They had an "overbooked situation" and offered US$300, accommodation at the airport and meal vouchers to anyone who would take the flight the next morning. We were tempted but decided to go ahead with the flight. After our 8.5 hour flight from Paris we were greeted by huge queues at the immigration and customs check. After a 50 minute wait we asked the customs officer how his day was going. He replied "Much better now I am talking to two hot Aussie chicks!" We took a train to downtown Philadelphia where we met up with Abbe thanks to our mobile phones! We had a good chat on the 40 minute ride to Downington where Abbe has a beautiful home with lots ... read more

What a week in Paris with a population of over 13 million and many tourists! The number of people was over-whelming at times. We walked and walked doing well over 20000 steps most days. Occasionally we used the Metro which is a great transport system and easy to use. We got a 4 day museum pass which we put to good use visiting some wonderful places including the Louvre (huge, it would take 9 months to glance at every piece of art there), Musee d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou (the modern art there was so different to everything else we saw), Chateau de Versailles (magnificent gardens), Musee Picasso, Saint-Chapelle (truly beautiful stained glass windows) and the Musee de l'Orangerie (Monet's waterlillies were in 2 big oval shaped rooms). We also climbed the Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe and ... read more

We decided to drive to a B & B near Paris then drive to Paris the next day. We farwelled Yveline at Kerambis on July 20th and set off around the southern coast of Brittany to Lorient. We then drove to Rennes and across to Le Mans on a motorway. We then drove to a farm house near the town of Illiers-Combray where Jean-Paul and Gisele met us in their beautiful home that they have renovated. It has huge rooms and a lovely garden. We enjoyed a 4 course dinner with freshly picked vegetables from the garden. We had an interesting conversation in French while eating our meal. Sal and I were their first guests from Australia. The house was amazing with all sorts of things that Gisele had collected on display: farm tools, old baking ... read more

We arrived in Nantes on Bastille Day (July 14th). We picked up our hire car, a dark brown 2 door Lexia which we called Chocolat! I was the driver and Sal the navigator because it is very expensive for drivers under 25 to hire cars. Driving on the right side was a challenge but with Sal's excellent navigation skills we were soon on the expressway to Brittany. We were greeted at Kerambris, just outside of port Manech, by Yveline, a soft spoken and gentle french women who is all kindness! Our home for a week was a beautiful farmhouse which has been in Yveline's family for 300 years. Yveline was very helpful in telling us (in french :))about the best places to eat and some great walks. THe food in Brittany is great - lots of ... read more
