We are in Boston for the Thanksgiving weekend. Left White Plains at 5:30 in the morning, reached NYC and caught the Fung Wah bus ( incredibly cheap Chinese fare). Its pouring throughout the journey and for the rest of the day as well. Land up at Sanjit’s best buddy’s place, have an awesome thanksgiving lunch ( eating chicken masquerading as turkey) and then go for dinner. Of course, we’re complete strangers to the hosts but it’s a very motley crowd comprising mostly Indians (and one Turk).Other than me, Sanjit and the hosts, everyone else in the room has a Phd!!! mathematics, finance, economics, microbiology…you name it…..anyways, it makes for an interesting evening and I don't know if i'm high on the wine or the conversation.Boston sure is the intellectual mecca of the world. Today, I wake ... read more

Lost luggage and 3 flights later, I arrived in freezing New York from sunny Egypt wearing flip-flops on my feet (Aussies be ware of using the term thongs outside of Oz, people would look at you funny, thinking that you´re talking about your g-string). Flip-flops aren't a good idea, when changing continents and climate zones, and especially when travelling with Iberia airlines, so I´ve learnt. Lucky me, I met a lovely girl named Nicky at New York airport, who took me in for the night... While I was having a nervous breakdown at one of the service desks at the airport about my lost luggage, Nicky was doing the same right beside me. She had a huge bag with her and they wouldn´t let her check it in, saying it was too late for that. While ... read more

So we eventually got to Boston after a majorly long mistake-ridden journey. We had to wait hours to get through customs in Niagara, it was already busy enough but us not having the necessary forms filled in delayed things even longer. We were the last back on our bus receiving sarcastic applause. After the customs nightmare we found out that the bus ticket we had wasn't able to take us directly to Boston and that we'd have to go all the way down to New York first of all then catch a bus back. All in all turned out to be a 22 hour trip, but we saved on a night's accomodation although it didn't seem like a bonus at the time. We were staying at the HI Hostel in Boston. Hi Everyone! Flight from Toronto was delayed, funniest part of this was the frequent announcements in the airport saying 'please keep control of your personal belongings'?! Like they are going to run away or start a riot or something. Slight concern when once we had boarded the Captain announced we were delayed because they had a mechanical problem with the plane but it was OK now!!! On arrival in Boston we were surprised and amused to find rows of rocking chairs lined up against the windows so you could sit and watch the planes, weird but cute. Got to hotel OK and it was actually better than it looked on the website (I was panicking a bit in case it was a repeat of the New York situation), really nice, in a nice area (couple of ... read more

Saturday my friend Bernie & I caught the 0830 commuter train into Boston which a round trip is $10.50 which sure beats driving into the city. It took about an hour from Franklin. When we arrived at the train station we purchased the trolley ticket which was a City View one. It was the one with less stops (8) than the other which at first I was dissappointed because we had originally wanted the one with more stops but this one ended up being fine. It also included a harbor cruise. We did that first since the weather was beautiful and sunny and it was supposed to rain later in the day. The last time I was in Boston it was raining & we stayed inside on the boat. It was the 1st stop off the ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 24 24th September - 3rd October 2006 New England in the Fall. The Hills are Alive! Rain came eventually as it does, moving us on for the long drive west, across-country through Bangor, Newport, Skowhegan, and Rangeley (in the general direction of Montreal). We drove for two hundred miles beside rising hillsides and cloud-swept mountains clad in the autumn colours of broad-leaved trees, each leaf a bold dot of oil on the canvas: the bronze of beech, yellow of birch on stark white stems, red of oaks, ash still green awaiting the first frost, poplar shimmering gold on rounded stems, bright edged sumac, and the fresh orange and reds of maples; holding back, tempting us to stay a while, tantalisingly balanced on the edge of flame. By the roadside Maine homes ... read more

Arriving in the early afternoon, I met Mattzee's wonderful grandparents again. Last time I met them I was giving them a tour around Richmond's campus because I drove with them and the parent-Zakreskis down to Wake Forest to see Mattzee in his first speaking role. Their house was AMAZING beautiful. I tried to take as many pictures of it as I could, it was so old English and livinable. settled in, went to get lunch at a bar with blue berry beer, yum! I didn't bring my ID with me so I just took a sip of Mattzee's. Both of our college's football teams were playing games which were on in the bar, so that was cool. The fact that neither of them won was not as cool... Went back, had some homemade dinner, yum, watched ... read more

I arrived in Boston later than planned, my flight from Newcastle to Heathrow was about an hour late arriving because of the "weather", but the plane flew right over central London so i managed to spot a whole host of famous landmarks (Parliment, Big Ben, That big white wheel thing, the new Wembley and also Arsenals new stadium), when we finally landed after about 45 minutes of circling above Heathrow there was a mad dash to the connecting flights area and a short bus ride to Terminal 4 where we discovered that our flight that was meant to be leaving at 4.30pm didn't even have a gate assigned to it yet! And when we all did board about an hour or so later we didnt actually take off for another 45 minutes because air traffic control ... read more

Boston was fun and experiencing the history behind this old city was a great learning experience. We did all the obligatory things such as the Quincy Market, Faneuil Hall, Newbury Street etc... We also did something that ended up being very interesting: the freedom trail. This is a trail that meanders through the city for about 2.5-3 miles, taking you to significant monuments and buildings. The trail is marked by a red line on the sidewalks and is a breeze to follow. You can see several pictures taken on the way. We also went to the Harvard campus which is beautiful, however full of overly smart and nerdy people ! The students there hardly smile and their skin tone is whiter than a triple bleached bed sheet. However, the campus is impressive and inspiring. As we ... read more
