Singapore Sling!

The last stop on our tour, Singapore. We have had three days in Singapore discovering Chinatown, Little India, Arab Street and the main shopping centres. There are literally thousands of shops here, too many really. I spent three hours looking for a pair of specific trainers and ten shops later none of them had my size! Very frustrating. Singapore has a great colonial feel and of course we went to the famous Raffles Hotel. As it says in their advertisements 'Where else would one partake of a Singapore Sling but Raffles!'. Of course we had one - two actually, yummy! Now we are sat at the airport ready to get on the plane back to the UK. It is 30 degrees plus and humid here and we just read in the paper it is forecast ... read more

Thailand to Adelaide

After 7 weeks in Thailand the heat and the grubbiness were getting to us to be honest. Thailand is a great place and the people are really friendly but you definitely notice it is not as Western as many of our destinations. All that rubbish by the roadside really doesn't smell good in 35 dgrees C heat! We saw some interesting jobs on the internet and so decided to take a trip to Oz to check it out. In the end we took a mini bus to Hat Yai and then caught the train to Kuala Lumpur (overnight). The train was pretty good, this time we managed to get a private cabin, still only about £10 each with a drink and cake thrown in; bargain! We spent the day in KL, taking in the Petronas ... read more

Cooking on Ko Lanta!

No we are not doing more Thai cooking, I mean it literally. Temperatures here are between 35 and 42+ degrees celcius. Good practise for Oz I guess! We have spent around three weeks on Ko Lanta which is nicknamed 'little scandinavia'. Not surprised, all the Swedish people on holiday in Thailand must be here in Ko Lanta! There are also quite a few living here so amazingly you can get Swedish open sandwiches (made with the Swedish caviar) and also those horrible salty licorice sweets that Sven loves. He has also had lots of fun listening in to Swedish people who don't realise he understands them. Especially a lady in a restaurant who asked me in Swedish if the food was good and her husband said to her "they don't understand Swedish", unfortunately she didn't hear ... read more

The Visa Run

Thailand “Land of Smiles” returns. After leaving Khao Sok we spent the rest of the day heading to Ranong - this time on a local bus where our belongings were safe! The main reason for going was a ‘visa run’ to Myanmar as our 30 day tourist visa was soon to run out. The people we met in Ranong were totally friendly and we did a visa run with Pon’s Place who were amazing and really kind and helpful. The trip itself was about ½ hour in a longtail boat across the bay to Myanmar and back. It was a totally comical situation, loads of people doing the same. So there we were, on a little longtail boat crossing into Myanmar huddled under an umbrella to shield us from the sea spray! We got to the ... read more

From Kanchanaburi we got the mini bus (with Fiona on board!) back to Bangkok then the VIP bus to Khao Sok. This section of our trip has to be the most disappointing we have had so far. To cut a long story short our bags were completely ransacked on the bus, (whilst they were in the downstairs luggage compartment) even locked cases. Unfortunately we didn’t realise this until we arrived in Khao Sok which is a National Park 2hrs from the nearest town. We then had all the drivers from the guesthouses, crowded at the entrance trying to charge us stupid amounts of money to drive us up to the guesthouses, especially when they found out that we had already booked ours (which unfortunately for us did not have a van and driver there!) Stubborn as ... read more

From Bangkok we took a mini bus to Kanchanaburi site of the famous 'Bridge over the River Kwai' Another Thai travel experience, we were picked up from our Hotel (obviously expecting the mini bus to be outside!) then had to follow the guy for about 20 min, with our backpacks in about 30c heat whilst he did a tour of all the guest houses to pick everyone up. Eventually everyone was loaded in, with all the luggage and we set off. After about 30 min., we had left Bangkok and were on the highway when all of a sudden the driver turned round. Next thing we know we end up right back where we started to "pick up one more!" Only in Thailand would this happen, 11 people kept waiting to pick up and a young ... read more

From Chiang Mai we went back to Bangkok by train. This time we went in the day. The service was good there was a hostess that came round with snacks and drinks which was all included in the price. You don’t get that on British Rail! A slice of Thai life here as we noticed there was a baby and two young children on the train. It seems that all the train staff were related, an older man (Grandpa), two women and a young man (definitely one married couple). They brought their children on the train (a 12 hour journey) and just took it in turns to look after them. Big drama on the train! At one point the older man came running to the back of the train and the baby had gone really quiet, ... read more

Yet another wildlife experience, of course in Thailand it had to be elephants. Elephants are working animals here, originating with the Karen hill tribes in the North of Thailand near the border with Burma. Originally used for logging, this is now illegal so the elephants are used for hill trekking and unfortunately some are used as performing animals. We decided to visit the Elephant Nature Park which has been set up by a Thai woman ‘Lek’ in order to rescue elephants. Some of the elephants there have had very traumatic experiences including one that has half a foot missing because it stepped on a landmine. The elephants are allowed to roam free during the day and visitors can help feed them and bathe them in the river. It was a really great experience to be so ... read more

We spent 6 days in Chiang Mai where I did a three day Thai cookery course, what a little chefette! It was really good, run by Thailand’s celebrity chef Sompon Nabnian (he does a programme for UKTV called Thai Way). I have to say the course was excellent, the one I did took place at the cooking school at Sompon’s house. Every morning I was picked up from our hotel by Nid, a lovely girl who works there. Then we went to the office in Chiang Mai and on to the cooking school. It is really well equipped with a personal cooking station for everyone (with a monster gas burner - want one of those!). There is also a classroom where Sompon or one of his chef’s explain each dish before letting the amateurs loose! Well ... read more

North to Chiang Mai

We eventually left the chaos of Bangkok and took the overnight train to Chiang Mai. We slept second class air con bunks (for about £10 each). The service was pretty good with a meal served to you seat (150 baht, about £2 each for soup, curry, chicken stir fry, rice and pineapple). Chiang Mai is much more laid back and has a more Burmese influence. We noticed this in the produce in the markets which were hill tribe handicrafts. There are several hill tribes in the area around Chiang Mai and you can do overnight treks to the villages. There are also lots of elephant trekking etc. Chiang Mai is also well known for cooking schools (more about this later) and massage spas (mmmmmmm). ... read more
