It was only a few hours from our campground in Cape Cod to Boston. After a lovely drive up, we took advantage of the free afternoon and got caught up with some e-mails and blog writing…and we might have laid on the bed and watched a couple movies too. The next morning was gray and rainy so we took our time getting ready. Finally the rain cleared and we got the "T" (metro) into downtown Boston. We got off at Boston Common and started the Freedom Trail from there. This is a historic walking trail that winds through Boston and takes you past significant churches, schools and other buildings like the home of Paul Revere. They have even painted a handy red line down the sidewalks so you don’t lose your way from the trail, clever! ... read more

It is strange to say but this will most likely be my last entry from Boston. The year has come to a close and I am ready to move on. In all, it has been around a 9-month waiting process since I applied to the JET Program back in November. However, it was well worth the wait and my excitement to return to Japan hasn’t wavered since the first day I filled in the application. In a matter of 8 days I will be heading off to Japan, and after a week of speeches and training in Tokyo, I will be making my way to my new home, a small island of 120 people in the Japanese Inland Sea. My bag is packed, or bags I am ashamed to say, and now I am busy wandering ... read more

I last left you guys with me arriving in Boston after a rather gruelling 32 hours of flight. Spent the rest of the week working pretty much all day and all night, although the work was punctuated with lots of food and fun as well!! Still - was missing my girl, and getting far too many late nights, and it was all a bit too much - so when the weekend came up, I turned down all the kind offers for entertainment and opted to go check out Boston on my own!! So let me tell you a bit about Boston. It's renowned for being a gorgeous city to visit; on account of its great architecture and history. Since its founding, Boston quickly became an intellectual and education centre, with the arrival of noted theologians and ... read more

Hoping to set this all up and get it running before I go- Welcome to my travelblog! I'm not much of a writer, but I sure like to go and look and will certainly try to tell you what it is I am seeing. Here's the lowdown. I am leaving 1 WEEK FROM MONDAY on the longest and arguably the coolest trip I have made. Starting in Boston, flying to London, ending in the rainy rainy monsoon season of Northern India. Namely, and for about a month, the Rajasthan route- Dehli, Agra, Pushkar, Udaipur, Jodhpur. Shortly thereafter, we're headed through Himachal Pradesh to the mountain towns of Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj in the lovely (at least I've heard they're lovely) Himalayas to spend a couple of months teaching English and hanging out. At least this is ... read more

Right! Time to write. It's always hard to get the first words out, however as you all know, once I get started it's hard to stop me!! I left Sydney on the 26th of July. Had an emotional farewell with my girl Sunday morning 7am at the airport. It was really sad to say bye - we were going to be apart for a whole 3 weeks, which is the longest we've ever been separated. So even though I was excited to be leaving on another expedition (yay!), I was also sad to be saying bye to my gorgeous wife (boo!). Now I know some of you out there have spent far longer away from your loved ones than us, and so you're probably thinking that we're just a bunch of sentimental wimps. You're probably right ... read more

Boston, the so called "hub of the solar system", this may be true but both me and Claire ‎have been ill and therefore didn't see much of the city at all. ‎ One day Claire was ill so we sat in the park, one day I was ill so ....... we sat in the hostel ‎and then in the park. ‎ The few occasions when we did venture out we made it as far as the Cheers bar the ‎inspiration for the US sitcom or just down the main street. ‎ On Sunday we watched the world cup final, we made our way to the Italian area the place ‎was really bustling but we couldn't get anywhere near a TV screen. We watched some of ‎the game in the city square on the big screen but ... read more

One year ago today, I packed up my stuff, hauled it in a cab with Sean and Helen to the airport and took off for my year in India. One whole year ago. I'm not sure how to go about wrapping up a year of experiences that encompass some of the worst and best moments of my life to date, it seems like quite a daunting task...to put it lightly. The thing about journeys like this is that the beginning and end of every journey is filled with emotion. Whether it be fear, excitement, relief, nostalgia, anticipation, sadness, or hesitation, it is there, impossible to remove from the event. Of course these emotions come and go in different strengths throughout the trip itself, but never is it so poignant as in the actual commencement and conclusion ... read more

Oh boy is it hot here, 30C and all sunshine. Its been along time since I have had a face full of dripping sweat! Also it feels bizzare being back here now - as you know the place was flooding nearly 3 weeks ago when I arrived from Manchester. I had a walk around Boston Common and the lakes have returned to their normal levels and the city is really busy now with all the good weather drawing in the tourist gravy train. However, I had the pleasures of the subway today - which normally would be hot and stuffy but the blazing heat that is cooking the surface people made it seem more pleasent below! I have had a big interest in John F Kennedy for about 4 years and so I was excited by ... read more

...well, the beginning of our nation's history, anyway. These photos are from my walk along the Freedom Trail, in Boston, which links historic sites, many of which are associated with the Revolution and early days in the US. The trail starts at Boston Common, and then just follow the red brick road...or rather, line, on the sidewalk, which leads the "three" mile journey. I was exhausted by the end...... read more

This is my last week at "home," although I'm pretty sure that I don't spend enough time here for it to merit that title-- and I am cramming Spanish so much it almost feels like I'm in a Spanish speaking country. I don't normally watch TV, but I have been watching hours of the Spanish channel. I listen to only Spanish music. I am translating several of the children's books people (mostly my mom) donated into Spanish, "helping" my sister with her Spanish homework, making more Spanish flashcards and flipping through the hundreds I have already made, limiting my thoughts to only things I can think about in Spanish... it's awesome. I am so excited and scared about spending the summer in Peru, although the fear is not so much fear of danger as it is ... read more
