Hi everybody, So what have we been up to since Christmas?? well unfortunately our lives in the new world have had to adjust to the daily drudgery of working for me (cal) and a mixture of studying and general housewifery for Sharon… Living off a single income in one of the most expensive cities on America has proven to be a little tougher than we first imagined (Insert violins here). Chris (Chumley to all who know him) and Mairi-Louise came over to stay for a week around New Year. It was really good to see them and hear a Scottish accent again, well from M-L anyway. We behaved pretty much as you would expect given we had been living the quiet American style social life with lots of sitting in and an occasional beer, and now ... read more

Here we are! After more than a year in the planning, we've finally reached day 0 of what we'll call from here onward "The Trip" (very mysterious, yes?). We spent the last 2 days before leaving on a 6 pm flight to LA furiously packing, organizing, and last minute wedding planning. It was like being on call for your life, with a steady stream of action coming in the door and not enough time or nurses to take care of it all. We stayed awake for these last 2 days, not because we were trying to get a crazy adrenaline-junkie start to things, but because ... between the wedding planning and work and my bachelor party last weekend (!) we needed every last ounce of time to dot the i's and cross the t's. But now, ... read more

I LOVE NY!!!! Spent a few days there now, and wow what a city... So much to see and do, could never get bored there.. For those of you who don't know, I started a little trip. First stop NY, and now I'm in Boston visiting my grandma who I didn't see for years! In 2 weeks I'm meeting up with Jenny, a friend from Stockholm, and we'll spend a month in Costa Rica! Some lazy days on the beach, then off hiking in the jungles, diving as much as possible and lots of salsa dancing on top of that.. After Jenny goes back home I will look for work/volunteer work and maybe stay in Costa Rica for a bit. Then hopefully visiting old Uppsala 7-Upper Alberto in Venezuela, hopefully visit in the Galapagos Islands and ... read more

I’m currently preparing to spend four months in China. Four months in a spectacular country having the experience of a life time. I have six days of honors and AP classes that I have to finish up early before I only have to deal with regular English and Chinese. I have eight days before I disappear, leaving family and friends to enter a slight time warp of exploration before adulthood and college sneak up on me like a banjo in a dark forest. I will leave the joys of the internet behind (my fantasies of spending thirty minuets an afternoon snuggled comfortably inside a Beijing internet café have only recently been shattered) and will have to refrain calling people I care about daily. You can’t expect daily life. You can’t expect anything. The imagination that I ... read more

Well, we're in Cambridge, Mass., on family visiting holidays. We've covered Boston for nine days. We've hit the hot spots - especially the Mapparium. We'eve been downtown, north end, the big dig, Harvard Square, and the ever fabulous Druid in Inman Square, home of the best waitress this side of Australia. Yesterday was Marblehead, beautiful as ever. Today it's the Sam Adams Brewery. The tale of the southern cross and boomerang campaign on the Australian East Coast begins in a week. Stay tuned.... read more

Hi folks, Sorry about the lack of updates, we have been really busy getting ourselves sorted… Sharon spent the first couple of weeks in December Apartment hunting on the web. We were hoping for a 2 bed place somewhere close to town for about a $1000, this turned out to be an impossible dream… The cost of housing here is really steep.. So having viewed a couple of 2 bed’s in our price range and seeing they were complete dives and spoken to a real estate agent we realized that for the money we were willing to spend we were only going to get a 1 bed place.. So Sharon set up viewings for 5 apts over 2 days which was pretty tiring but that’s how we ended up with the place we’re in now. It's ... read more

Hi Folks, Day 5 of the American Dream and GOD DAMN this country is COLD.. The flights over were long tiring and uneventful. Note for future travelers- Cheap Continental flights via Newark DON’T have cool wee TV’s built into the seats and there is NO complimentary bevvy… 29-11-05 Our first night of our new lives was spent in the opulence of the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel (presidents gold floor) courtesy of a leaving present from all our friends in Glasgow (thanks folks) . And in true govan hill styleeee when the waiter let himself into the room to deliver the champagne and chocolate covered strawbs, me and shaz though we were getting burgled. (we hadn’t answered the door cos the room was SOOO big we didn’t here his expensively polite knocking).. 30-11-05 till 03-12-05 After the ... read more

Another short flight from Washington to Boston and I arrived to more bitingly cold temperatures. Getting in, in the evening, and it was time to check in to a hostel/hotel that didn't have my booking, once sorted I was out exploring the streets. Just trying to familiarise myself with the city, although I might have walked down a few ill-advised streets. While in Boston I checked out Fenway Park, the home of the famous Boston Red Sox and went on a tour of the stadium, although it was a little annoying they were digging up the surface and some areas we weren't able to access. Its supposedly the smallest playing surface in the league and it looked rather small. Flanked with much baseball history its the home of Babe Ruth, before his move to the Yankees, ... read more
