As I leave Boston I realize just how much culture shock I experienced here. Within my own country. For those of you who have never left the country (or those of you who have never traveled around your own country) it's definitely quite a revelation. When I first arrived in Boston I knew no one. I tried the usual stunts that we Southerners use to get to know people (nodding to people on the bus, randomly saying hello, sitting and examining someone's book while they read, asking questions) but as I soon discovered these people did not want to talk. They had their set schedules, and for the most part their set groups of friends. One had to tap into their lives (which was not an easy job) to get to know them as people. My ... read more

Hey everybody! I just talked to a good friend from Denison and realized that I truly can't go back to Denison this year. (Took me a whole summer after I graduated to figure that out.) I must say that it is definitely a strange feeling and wakes me up to how life is going to be now that I'm done with school. As many of you know I will be traveling back to good ole Chapel Hill on Tuesday and then to China on Friday. I decided that this was (whether I like it or not) probably the best way for everyone to try and stay in touch with me. I'll do my best to keep posting messages but sometimes I'm not too good at it so please continue to send me e-mails. As for now ... read more

I’m at the end of this six-week trip. The cash funds are low… and I start school in just three days… but… I couldn’t be happier. On a closing note to this whole travel blog, I thought I try to recount some of the most memorable moments and random thoughts over the past six weeks. Scariest Moment: When our Ryan Airlines pilot overshot the runway on our way to Paris and banked the 737-ish plane about a 100 feet off the ground… I thought for sure we’d crash… or at least hit a telephone pole. Everyone clapped when he finally got it right. Most Embarrasing Moment: In Brussels, I woke up at roughly 3 am one night to use the bathroom. I was surprised to see the men’s bathroom occupied so I took a risk and ... read more

First off, Boston is a beautiful city. The architechture is absolutely amazing and the history is fantastic. I spent one day walking around and shopping and then the next day on the hop-on/hop-off trolley tour. Thank you to my brother for recommending that because it really is the best way to see all the sites. My touristy day, I saw the Antique Row on Charles St. I poked around the shops and finally understood how those people on the 'Antique Roadshow' just somehow find these treasures in the oddest places. If only I had space in my suitcase to bring back furniture! I then walked down to block to see the original Cheers bar - took my obligatory picture and hopped back on the next trolley. I also took the free tour near Boston Common and ... read more

Well, here we are on our very last day. Feeling a bit apprehensive about coming home; especially after all the news we’ve been hearing. Really loved Boston and have been staying at a great hostel right in the centre of the city. Karl managed to squeeze in a final game of baseball (the Red Sox, at Fenway Park) and I dragged him to a brilliant production of Hamlet on the common last night (with real thunder & lightning). Niagara Falls completed our ‘World Waterfall Tour’ pretty spectacularly. Next stop was Cooperstown, New York for the Baseball Hall of Fame - or sunbathing by the lake in my case. We then visited some great beach towns like Newport, Rhode Island, Cape Cod & Martha’s Vineyard, where we splashed out on lobster to celebrate completing our 6500 mile ... read more

Day 11! I headed over to the New England Aquarium for a stroll through the tanks and then some whale watching. The aquarium itself is nice with plenty of things to see. My favorites were the dreaded jellyfish, the awesome turtles, and the leafy sea dragons. The sea dragons looked like weeds being blown way by a sea current. The penguin exhibit was also pretty cool. Its amazing to see the difference between the dorkish/doltish penguins on land and then watching them glide through the water like underwater ballerinas. Afterwards, I went on a whale-watching trip that guaranteed whales or your money back! I got to see right wales I guess. Mostly it was just their humps going in and out of the water. So I guess I wouldn’t be getting my money back. Still I ... read more

Day 10! I've been away from home for so long! I miss my cats! Spent the day in Boston sightseeing. My friend lives right around the corner from where the Bunker Hill Monument is. So I decided to check it out. I managed to climb a billion fights of stairs while huffing and puffing. Its amazing to see how out of shape I am! But after eating my 40th version of an Ultra Fisherman's Platter I can start to see why. I am fat and out of shape! I tried following part of the Freedom Trail today. It took me to see the U.S.S. Constitution to see how mariners used to make their living in time of peace and war, and then walked over the river on a bridge to check out downtown Boston. There is ... read more

Today has definitely been the most packed day of them all, and it happened in this place that is Boston. Firstly, I'll clear up some questions that people have been asking. No, it's not as hot as it is in New York, and not as humid, but still much hotter than back home! The place is so much different than anything else I've seen, but maybe that's because I've only been to two places here? I don't know, but you probably do :p Also, Willie left to go to Washington when I went to Boston. It's a shame, because he didn't leave or seem to want to give me any of his information, but I guess if I really wanted to get in touch, there aren't that many Willie Kunkel's in Washington state east of the ... read more
