New Orleans! Day 1: Colbys conferences have taken him to New Orleans for fun, frolic, and educational meetings. I have nce again been allowed to tag along with him for the duration. But while he is flying I am driving myself there from Austin. Its a long 8 hour drive and mostly boring. I got a speeding ticket just to break the monotony. The drive to Houston was expected. I've driven it before. After Houston though there is nothing. There is a long stretch through Beumont that is ugly as sin. Thing liven up just a bit after you cross the state line. I popped in some Lucinda Williams and timed it just right to where "Lake Charles" popped up right as I hit Lake Charles. It wasn't long until a cop pulled me over for ... read more

Vegas Baby! We took a Labor Day weekend trip to Vegas to escape the rat race for a coule of days. Well at least thats what I am doing. Colby is here to lose money at the casinos! :) We were staying at the Luxor, a hotel shaped like a pyramid because I love Egyptian culture. Thats really the only reason. Plus they have a hot tub suite! Yay hot tubs! All the hotels look fake tho. Luxor, Excalibur, New York, New York, MGM...they try really hard to be ritzy and get your attention. Plus walking down the strip you get accosted by guys and girls giving you tickets to peep shows and nude models at 10% of or something. Its very annoying. The Strip is also very hip and trendy. Its where the young people ... read more

The sands were AMAZING! After a few days in El Paso we decided to head over to White Sands National Monument for some fun among the sands. I have a great love of geological features and places so going to sands was an experience well needed. What struck me the most was that upon our arrival on a perfect day with clear azure skies was that the sands looked like snow. It was surreal expecting snow but feeling nothing but heat once you left your car. Also the sands are BLINDING! The sun reflecting off of them blinds you for the first half hour or so. Your eyes eventually get used to it but its quite painful at first. Waiting for your eyes to get used to it is worth it tho! The dunes and plants ... read more

Great vacation before the school year ends! Colby travels a lot on business for the state so he's promised to take me along. Our first trip was to his old home turf El Paso for some conference or other. We'd be staying for a couple of days. Our hotel was downtown at EL Paso's oldest most glamorous hotel. We had a corner room and it was HUGE, very presidential, with a view of the mountains. While Colby was away conferencing I headed over to the EL Paso Museum of Art and its a pretty nice one for a town of this stature. They have an excellent collection for not being know the world over. Its a definite must to any visitor to this town. The following day I visited the Insights El paso Science Museum with ... read more

Manzanillo is amazing! The water is warm and the people are great. We walked the beach in the morning by the hotel. It is very open sea so they don't recommend that we swim there. SO we just saw the waves crash against the beach for a few hours. Later we went to a beach where the locals hang out. It was great! I played in the water with my neice to give my brother and his wife a break. She's fun! We through mud at each other with my mom watching over us. We headed back to Guadalajara in the early evening. We head back to Texas tomorrow and I miss it.... read more

Zoo Time! Guadalajara has a pretty big zoo. There are plenty of animals to observe and you can even feed some giraffes! They have a very raspy tongue. Its gross. Afterwards we visited our other Uncle. Tio Leonel is a quiet man. Tio Chita is old. She's my grandpa's sister. She must be in her late 90s by now. While there they decided to take us to the park by the edge of the gorge. I had no idea we were that close to such an awesome place! The valley floor looks so far away from there and there is a very lush green landscape that dominates everything. Supposedly its where the San Andreas Fault comes to an end. Scary! We're one earthquake away from tumbling down into the valley below.... read more

We ventured out of Guadalajara today and headed over to Lago Chapala. It is Mexico's biggest lake and it is dotted with little villages around it. We visited one of the villages, Ajijic, and hung out at the park by the lake. I ate a delcious fruit cup with mango, pineapple, melon, watermello, grape, and prickly pear. I had them sprinkle lemon, salt, and chile all over it. It was delicious! Afterwards we went to a restaraunt in town and had us a good old family fajita feast. I sat at the head of the table like some grand patron at the ranch. It made me feel good, plsu I loved the family atmosphere. I can say I had plenty of fajitas, tacos, salsa, rice, beans, onions, and bottled coca-cola.... read more

After a day at the markets yesterday we decide to venture downtown to the main plaza in Guadalajara. Its a great place to visit. There is the big cathedral and a nice old style theater. We also went to a history museum with plenty of archeological and historical findings on display. They also have a huge jewelry store with all manner of gold, silver, and jewels. We spent way too much time there and I didn't buy anything. I am not a big fan of jewelry but my parents are so I let them shop until they couldn't anymore. My aunt must f noticed my boredom becuase she decided to take me over to the indoor markets nearby. Fruit and meat vendors were everywhere as were textiles and wrestling masks. I bought myself a nice green ... read more

Day 2 We started our day with an excellent home cooked breakfast. Eggs and tortillas and bacon. Yum! Then we headed out to the mercados for some shopping and sightseeing. I love looking at Mexican craft markets. They have so many colorful things to look at. Plus ever church around the corner seems to be perfectly placed to look as good as it possibly can. I love small town churches in Mexico. They seem very inviting. After a while me and my parents abandoned our group and headed over to the plaza nearby. We sat around the gazeebo and watched as the locals just gossiped, recalled old times, or ate from the many vendors. My favorites were the gorditas. Its hard to describe. Its not like Taco Bell gorditas. Those are crap. Gorditas are like corn ... read more
