Hanoi, Vietnam. There are loads of 'bia hoi' (fresh beer) joints that sell really good draught beer that's brewed without preservatives... the beers cost 7 pence (yes, seven!) per glass! Needless to say, we spent rather a lot of our time at such establishments, and due to the lack of preservatives, the hangovers were not to bad either... hurrah!!!... read more

After an incredible time in Cambodia it was time to bid a fond farewell to one of the countries that has had a profound effect on us both; the warmth and hospitality of it's people (who are still reeling from events of the past) will remain in our hearts and minds forever... Well, we spent 3 weeks in Vietnam, starting off down the Mekong River from Cambodia to Chau Doc and then Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). We travelled up the Vietnamese coast, stopping off at various places such as Nha Trang (great snorkelling), Hoi An (cheap tailors and even cheaper beers) and finally ending up in Hanoi (rather chaotic, even cheaper beers!) We have been travelling throughout Cambodia & Vietnam with our Norwegian friends Hans and Elisabet, who we met on the Thai/Cambodia border. We ... read more

We have been in Cambodia for over 2 weeks now and really love it. We are staying here for a few days longer before travelling down the Mekong river into Vietnam. Hope you like the piccies and our apologies for not blogging sooner, but when the beer is only 26 pence a glass, you can understand why it's fallen behind a bit!!! Needless to say, we are both fine (apart from a few bad hangovers!) and are really trying hard not to think about how long we have left... Hope this words and pictures find you all well, Pip pippety pippeth, G&R x... read more

After a few days relaxing in Singapore we caught the bus to Melacca in Malaysia. Melacca was very hot and we felt we only needed a day there to see the sights, we spent the morning visiting some of the old Portuguese and Dutch buildings, followed by a few very interesting hours exploring Chinatown. From Melacca we caught a bus to the manic city of Kuala Lumpur. We both really enjoyed staying in the heart of the city, our hotel was in Chinatown in the middle of a bustling day and night market, where you can buy any kind of fake item your heart desires (including cheap dvds!) and many it doesn't! Our only dissapointment in Kuala Lumpur was that we couldn't watch the sun setting over the city, we didn't realise that you could only ... read more

After a brief layover at Perth for one night, we flew (very excitedly) to Singapore. After we had boarded, the plane was delayed for about an hour while they loaded eleven dogs (yes, dogs!) onto the cargo hold. As we were taxing down the runway we could just hear barking over the roar of the engines. Upon arrival in Singapore we caught a transfer bus to our hotel which is 1 block from Raffles. We went into Raffles once and felt rather scruffy so abrupty left without sampling the famous Singapore Sling, maybe next time! We spent a good few days exploring Singapore, eating lots of nice food and taking in the clean and very safe atmosphere. Guy had a treat on his birthday as there was a STAR WARS exhibition on in town which had ... read more

Sorry folks this has been a long time coming! Although we really enjoyed Oz we found it very expensive (as we had to fly so much) and fairly similar to the UK. We began our Austrialian adventure with a couple of nights in Brisbane to sort out our bus tickets up the Gold Coast, and to visit Austrialia Zoo, unfortunately we didn't see Steve, but managed to spot many lookalikes! From Brisbane we caught the bus to Noosa, an upmarket seaside town, then to Rainbow Beach to see the coloured sands, and then onto Hervey Bay to visit Fraiser Island. Frasier Island was just as beautiful as Rachel remembered and brought back fond memories of her trip with Jo and Penni. We did a little walking in the rainforest and lots of swimming, but not in ... read more

The South Island of New Zealand is a big contrast to the North. Everything is much farther apart and spread out. The scenery is startlingly beautiful and the roads are empty (apart from cops with speed cameras... Guy had a run-in with NZ's finest and it cost us a day's budget! We spent our days driving around and our nights under canvas, with the odd splurge on a real bed once in a while!... read more

Here's that text you've been badgering us for!: After changing our flights, we landed in Auckland a few days sooner than originally planned. We were immediately pleased with what we now term as 'civilization overload'. This can be both a blessing and a curse, dependent on our mood, situation or suuroundings. We are pleased to say though that this overload was definately of the positive nature! We were delighted by the complimentary coffee that greeted us whilst waiting at the baggage carousel. We were delighted that there was conveniently priced transportation outside to take us to our hostel, and we were very pleasantly suprised by the City of Sails itself, spending a few days here immersing ourselves in civilization after being a bit starved of it since leaving Brazil. We also discovered (well, we had anticipated ... read more
