I’m at the end of this six-week trip. The cash funds are low… and I start school in just three days… but… I couldn’t be happier. On a closing note to this whole travel blog, I thought I try to recount some of the most memorable moments and random thoughts over the past six weeks. Scariest Moment: When our Ryan Airlines pilot overshot the runway on our way to Paris and banked the 737-ish plane about a 100 feet off the ground… I thought for sure we’d crash… or at least hit a telephone pole. Everyone clapped when he finally got it right. Most Embarrasing Moment: In Brussels, I woke up at roughly 3 am one night to use the bathroom. I was surprised to see the men’s bathroom occupied so I took a risk and ... read more

So we returned to London on Wednesday. Amsterdam was great, but Dan and I were both happy to leave. Our hostel was the St. Christopher's Village just down the street from London Bridge. Of all the hostels we’ve stayed in during these two weeks, this was one of the best. The place had a hot tub and sauna on the roof. It also sat atop a popular bar called Belushi’s. Like in Paris, Dan and I were proactive in the socializing department and made quite a few friends -- Adrian from Ohio… Christian from Germany… Serena from Australia… Ryan from Vancouver… Reed and Kirk from California… TiTi from Berkley… Dave from Jersey. I even met a girl in our hostel from K-State… but I won’t hold it against her. On Thursday, Dan and I started the ... read more

We arrived in Amsterdam on Saturday. We really had no fixed plans... just a few ideas we extracted from Dan's "Let's go" Europe guide book. We took the tram from Amsterdam's central station to our hostel -- Inner Amsterdam Hostel -- located in the southwestern part of Amsteram. It was a reasonably nice place... like most hostels we've encountered to this point... with some kind of a bar, some kind of area for internet access, etc. We spent that first evening just wandering around trying to familarize ourselves with the city. Before arriving in Amsterdam we finally broke down and bought a compass... which helped greatly. I cannot tell you how many times we thought we were heading north when we were actually heading south. So if you're ever backpacking around Europe... useful tip #1: get ... read more

Dan and I arrived in Brussels around 3:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon. We almost missed our train out of Paris because the automated machine that was SUPPOSED to give us our tickets apparently didn't like the taste of my credit card. The train ride was a smooth hour and a half. Our hostel in Brussels was the Vincent Van Gogh Youth Hostel -- where you have to have a passport and you can't be over the age of 35. The place was great... although there weren't nearly as many english-speaking visitors as in Paris. But the place had a bar with cheap beer, a pool table, lockers, breakfast, and lots of other extras. The only downside was that they ended breakfast at 9:00 AM and they locked everyone out of all the rooms from 10 to ... read more

Paris -- one down, three to go

Finals finished up on Friday. It was two two-hour exams... nothing incredibly stressful. I was very happy to get the tests out of the way so that I could shift my complete attention to our european tour. After exams, I spend much of Friday afternoon simply getting things in order (packing, cleaning, trip planning, details, details, details, etc.). That night our group spent one last night together at the Molly Darvy's restaurant before we headed over to the Trinity Rooms club. Just drinking and dancing. It was funny... over the course of this trip we've made good friends with our bus driver, Paul (a former British soldier). He became especially close with Lisa from our group and he's actually bought a plane ticket and is heading over to the states (Nebraska and Kansas) in early September. ... read more

The trip to Dublin -- our only organized trip as a group -- was arranged so that we could see the High Court of Ireland. Aside from those few set hours, we had the remainder of the weekend to choose our own adventure. The trip started Thursday after class. Nearly everyone (minus Joe) boarded the 2:20 train for Dublin, including professors Lenich and Stacy. We spent most of the two-hour ride playing intense games of Uno.... which I know I played as a kid… but didn’t remember being so fun. After we arrived in Dublin, Sean, Dan and I met up with Melanie of the Marley Martyrs (the softball team we met the first week in Ireland). The three of us guys stayed at her apartment (for free)… everyone else stayed in a hostel. On Thursday ... read more

Life is back to normal in Ireland. I missed three days of classes vacationing in Spain… which gave me plenty of reading to do once I returned. So I’ve spent the bulk of the past week trying to… believe it or not… study. I’ve also tried to recoup my financial footing in anticipation of our trip this Thursday to Dublin (through Sunday), and my August post-course traveling. Speaking of which… my travel plans are basically finalized. Dan and I decided to drop Zurich for timing and cost reasons. So the official schedule is as follows: (1) Paris, July 30 - Aug. 3; (2) Brussels, Aug. 3 - Aug. 6; (3) Amsterdam, Aug. 6 - Aug. 10; (4) London, Aug. 10 - Aug. 14 It also appears like our London travel plans could be cut short. So there was no running with the bulls. After Dan and I arrived at the Barcelona airport in Girona on Thursday night, we checked all the possible trains, buses, and rental cars that could take us to Pamplona. All were either booked or way too expensive. So we made the executive decision to stay in Barcelona until Sunday. It was quite an easy decision, really, in view of the events in London. I personally received a number of emails from concerned friends and family. So… ‘thank you.’ I was even surprised to seem my name picked up on the AP Wire. In a nutshell… Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. It was quite nerve-racking to arrive in a city where we had no hostel or hotel reservations in what I’m ... read more

but our luck could have been much worse. A few quick words: My travel buddy, Dan Calderon, has started his own travel blog on travelblog.org… his can be found here. In case you couldn’t get enough info and pictures… there’s now more. As for our trip to Pamplona, Spain to run with the bulls?? In short… it didn’t happen… but we ARE lucky to be alive (see my parting words in my July 5 post). Dan and I were riding the London subway system at the exact moment it was bombed on Thursday, July 6. In fact, we just a few interchange stations away from the blast at Edgware Road station. Here’s a brief recap leading up to that point: Dan and I flew in to London’s Gatwick airport just after 10:00 PM…. I lost my ... read more

We’re really getting into the subject matter for each of our classes. It’s business as usual, as far as law school is concerned, with Professor Leeds (KU) and Professor Lenich (NU). Professor Quill of the University of Limerick, on the other hand, makes me feel like I’ve been transported back to undergrad. I’ve been told that law school in Ireland is taught at the undergraduate level… which may explain why we’re lectured for 70 minutes with almost no interaction. He’s an incredibly nice and intelligent guy… just a different approach I guess. Our group is also in the habit of eating together everday after class. Today we ate at the Stables Club on campus. I had a breaded chicken sandwich, salt & vinegar chips, and a 500 ml Diet Coke. Nothing special. Afterward, a number of ... read more
