Living from one weekend to another while trying to surpass other rats in the race, we began to think it was time for some introspection and deep meditation. Of course, in our context, it just translates to a lot of wine, a lot of fun and basically a good old holiday. So we had about 5 days and we just decided to see the place we’ve wanted to for a while now…California Thunderstorm + Evening Flight = Missed connections Thursday evening found us sitting smugly in the plane, ready to take off in time. And what do you know, a large thunderstorm decided to roll in just then. So we sat and sat and sat some more. We had a connection in Phoenix which we obviously missed and had to spend the night in an airport ... read more

After weeks and weeks of uncharacteristic behavior - namely getting up before 6 a.m. everyday and 2 hr commutes - I decided it was time to take a break. So the idea of sunning myself in Florida seemed tantalizing. Add to it the prospect of a girls’ only weekend and you have a deal. So Ria (Cousin or niece actually) and I met up in Miami, flying in from Toronto and Boston respectively. The 3.5 hrs of flight was rather nasty due to a rain system which enveloped nearly the entire flight path. So I landed at Fort Lauderdale airport (about 30 miles from South Beach where we were staying). The airport for some reason is known as Hollywood International Airport! We had planned our stay in the most happening part of town - South Beach ... read more

Isla del Encanto - Island of the charm indeed! Turquoise oceans, white sand, balmy weather , lush green rainforests, charming 16th century architecture, tucked away islands, fun-loving people , exquisite cuisine , cultural cocktail, salsa and jazz - incredible as it sounds , Puerto Rico is a heady mix of all this and more. Hard as it is to conjure in the sub-freezing climes of Boston, the thought of our week-long annual holiday, to be spent in the Caribbean, toasted us during the Christmas and New Year Holidays. The year turned a corner, and we headed off to Puerto Rico on the 6th. Its status as a commonwealth of the U.S. means we don’t need a visa to visit Puerto Rico unlike the other Caribbean nations. A 4 hr direct flight from Boston deposited us ... read more

For sometime now, we had been dreaming of a driving holiday - The Thanksgiving weekend seemed a perfect time to revv up. So we decided to take a road trip heading south from Boston along the coast. A storm brewing up along the entire eastern coast, however, laid that idea to rest. That’s when we decided to stop trying to avoid the cold and to head north for the snowy slopes of Vermont. And what a fabulous idea it was. Luckily we managed to book some hotels and headed off early on Friday morning. We had a rough itinerary in our heads but no fixed plans. Our first stop was Rutland in Central Vermont. As we approached Rutland, we noticed some snow flurries which quickly yielded to a full-fledged snow shower. Driving through a snow shower ... read more

For most US citizens, going to Canada is no big deal. When it comes to people like us, it assumes slightly less ordinary proportions. We have to obtain a visa for starters. As Sanjit left for a business-trip to India, I decided to go on a little vacation of my own. Canada seemed an inviting prospect - not too far and I have family there. So finally, I found myself on a tiny aircraft (yeah what’s with that, if American Airlines is reading this - get over stupid tiny aircrafts which seem like capsules and with no food - ok that’s got nothing to do with the size of aircraft , just venting !!) browsing through Angelina jolie’s eyes and scarlett’s pout in trashy magazines. I landed at Toronto and headed straight for downtown. At first ... read more

We’ve been in Boston for 3 months now and after exploring a lot of places near Boston and Rhode Island, we were itching to head further north. The Labor Day weekend was just the opportunity we were waiting for. So we decided to drive up to the White Mountains Region in New Hampshire. Its a little over 2 hrs away from Boston, and for a first-timer we highly recommend spending at least 2 days ( we still have a lot of places to see in the region which we’ve chalked up for next time) From Boston, you basically get on to I-93 and keep going straight for 135 miles (or 217 km). It could have been an incredibly monotonous journey save for the fact that New Hampshire really is a lush green and beautiful state. Franconia ... read more

As holidays go, this was a fabulous one. As extended weekends go, this was absolutely top-notch. 9th July being our wedding anniversary, we decided to take our much-awaited holiday this weekend. The celebrations started on Friday night itself with the Cambridge Dance Party which is a free dance party in Central Square for all Cambridge residents. The music was good and it was a lot of fun. Day 1 - Action Packed adventures , lots of ocean and some lazing From Beantown to P-town We got up early in the morning to catch our ferry from Boston Harbour to Provincetown, which is at the tip of Cape Cod (See map). I highly recommend this fast ferry to anybody not wishing to drive to the cape.(www.bostonharborcruises.com) Its very comfortable and full of all amenities. Most importantly ... read more

“What evil spirits have you familiarity with? None. Have you made no contract with the devil? No. Why do you hurt these children? I do not hurt them. I scorn it. Who do you employ then to do it? I employ no body. What creature do you employ then? No creature. I am falsely accused “ Her defense was useless. She was hanged anyway. Along with 19 others. Her crime - she was accused of being a witch. You may scoff at this now, but in 1692 people did believe in witches and witchcraft. This is the real defense of “Sarah Good" in the Salem Witch trials. It may have been over 300 years ago, but Salem still is all about the witches trial. The story goes thus …some teenagers in the small village of ... read more

I think we’ve set a new record of sorts in shifting residences. Consider this - In the last 3 yrs - I’ve lived in 11 different apartments !!!! So I guess I’m a veteran now. Living in Cambridge though is entirely different from any other place. Let me backup and tell you something about the history and geography of Cambridge. Cambridge is a town adjacent to the city of Boston. The city of Boston itself is very compact( only 232 sq. km) and the surrounding areas( treated as separate cities with mayors) comprise the Greater Boston area. The Charles river separates Boston from Cambridge. Cambridge was established as the town of “Newtowne” in ... read more

Its done. We've finally relocated from Bangalore to Boston. The sense of finality which these words impart has only now begun to sink... nay trickle in. Also "relocated" has a sense of completion in it, which well isnt quite the whole truth. The truth of the matter is that we're still in transition. The last few weeks flew past us in a flurry. Selling our furniture, financial paperwork, getting our visa in order, hotels, tickets .....phew !! It didn't help matters that our respective work schedules were quite crazy too. I highly recommend kijiji.com for anyone looking to sell anything in their house. Its free. Also hassle free. And simple. What wasnt so simple was watching our house being stripped of our favourite possesions as we watched and bid farewell to our stuff in muted melancholy. Anyone ... read more
