As I said in my last entry lets have some fun,USA lika Australia is a big country ,when I say big I also mean the people so I am including the PIE scale as and when I see it . For those of you who don't know what the PIE scale is:- Many moons ago in the UK there was a comic called The Beano or The Dandy in it was a character called Desperate Dan a real strong man ,he had an enormous appetite ,his favourite food was Cow Pie,they contained a whole Cow they were huge so the Pie scale was born .The PIE scale is graded by how many Desperate Dan pies one can eat. The number of Pies relates to the size of the person 1 being the smallest 10 being ... read more

Easter long weekend 2007 we drove the 7 hours up the coast from LA to San Francisco. Definitely our favourite US city so far it had a bit of everything. Downtown reminds us of Melbourne with the trams etc but much bigger and better in a London (great shopping)crossed with New York (fire escapes on buildings & hotel porters hailing yellow cabs) kinda way. There are steep hills everywhere like you see in all the "cop TV shows & movies" with the down hill car chases which were very scary to drive down & up at first. But the great thing about all the hills is that everywhere you go you can see the water that surrounds the city which looks like Sydney Harbour with all the sail boats etc. Also all over the San Francisco ... read more

San Francisco's crooked street - not sure whats best the scary hills or the windy road to get up and down?

Arrived in San Fransico on Sunday and checked into the first youth hostel I found in a guide, which turned out to be an excellent choice. Its really close to everything and the staff here are really friendly. Staying in a dorm with 2 other guys. One is from Sweden and the other from San Diego and are both cool. The day I checked in a couple of the girls that work here invited me for a beer and then offered to take me on a tour of SF with one of her mates that was visiting from Brighton. Had an excellent day going around loads of areas I would not have seen on a tour. One of their brothers works on a ferry that takes you across the bay so we got on that ... read more

Hi All!!! First stop: San Francisco. First thought: Oh my god...look at those hills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were in San Francisco for 6 days and stayed at USA Hostels which was a few blocks from Union Square. The hostel was ok, not great, but not horrible (which is always good!). The actual city and the houses are like nowhere else I've seen. They are so cute, and you see the typical houses on postcards, movies etc., but there are actually heaps of different styles all mingled together. They're all so pretty, and apparently worth a pretty penny too! The hills...oh my god, the hills!!! I would never imagine a city where people are supposed to walk around, could have hills quite that steep! They need the signs they have for thrill rides at the bottom warning people ... read more

Since this would probably be my last trip to San Francisco in a while, I wanted to do a little more site seeing. I had planned on taking a tour of Alcatraz, but they were sold out until well after I was supposed to leave. So, I walked around the Wharf for a little while before heading to Chinatown. I think this was the first time I've been down there when it hasn't been raining. The weather was actually perfect. After that I got in my car and headed up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower. You can really see the city great from up there. After that I went up to the top of Lombard Street and took a few pictures before driving down the "Crookedest Street" in America. I couldn't get over the tourists stopping ... read more

We woke up nice and early ready for our monster 500 + mile trip across to San Francicsco. We set off at just before 8am and managed to make good progress on the oh so boring Interstate freeways. Apart from the odd pee and fuel stops there really was not much to report as it was really really dull drive - nothing around but desert and the odd hill! When we finally got closer to our destination things started to get a little more interesting and the sat nav finally had something to do! (Especially helpful in rush hour traffic - we hit the outskirts of San Francisco at 5pm). We first caught sight of the Golden Gate Bridge whilst we were driving into 'Frisco' on the Bay Bridge - on an 8 mile stretch ... read more

March 6th -11th 2007 So finally our bay area trip happened! We had multiple reasons to be excited about this trip- not only was it Prema chithi (aunt’s) son Upanaynam (Poonal) function that we were able to attend, my parents also were coming from India. Apart from that we had plans to meet some of our old friends, which I was really looking forward to. Anitha & I left for San Jose on March 6th and Karthik joined us on the 8th. I flew on United and Anitha on Southwest. After arriving at 1 pm, and a quick lunch…we went to the airport to pick up our parents who were arriving at 4 pm. It was great to see them after 1 and half years. They had a relatively uneventful flight and were glad to be ... read more

After years of wanting to do this, months of deciding, weeks of planning, days of details, we're almost ready to embark on this journey. Tomorrow we fly from San Francisco - L.A. - Fiji - Auckland - Invercargill. Our goal for this trip is to ride the length of both islands from the south to the north. Roughly 1500 miles. Wish us luck, safety, peace, health and incredible beauty. This, after all, is life, and one must live life in depth and richness with an eye and heart tuned to living on the edge of the experience of being alive. ... read more

Now I know I live here, but I imagine people from other countries might be coming here and looking to meet people, find things to do, and blend in with the locals here in San Francisco. That would mean don't rent those 3 wheeled motorized cars at Fisherman's Wharf, drive around the city with a giant map obviously having no clue where you are and holding up traffic. Instead, ask me! I am born and raised here and know many great places away from the tourist area, of course you have to see Alcatraz, but go at night on the Flashlight tour instead, and the Golden Gate Bridge is much more eerie and beautiful when it is encompassed in fog at night as well and all you see are the lights going up into a ... read more

Hello all! We write our inaugural travel blog entry in a dilapidated, rat-infested "internet" room of the back corner of a backpacker's just outside the red light district of San Francisco. We've had nothing but bread and water today (being on a tight budget), and the smell of hot dogs drifting in through the broken window is making our mouths water. Actually, we're sitting on a comfy leather executive chair in the study of my aunt and uncle's home in the USA's Silicon Valley - Cupertino, California. This place is far from dilapidated, and there certainly aren't any rats or red lights around. And who said anything about hot dogs? We've stuffed ourselves silly (for the fourth time in two days), the crime scene tonight being a Chinese Restaurant just outside the main part of ... read more
