Nic woke up in our hotel in Santa Barbara and couldn't sleep. He had several things on his mind - the cost of fuel in California, the Jambalaya he'd had for dinner and the cricket world cup, but mostly the fact that our trip and our budget are coming to an end and we were no closer to making any decisions. Santa Barbara is a very neat and tidy town. Everything is clipped and manicured - even the homeless people look relatively polished. That night we'd had a walk along the pier, played baseball on the beach with CJ's new mini Dodger's bat and ball and enjoyed a delicious dinner in a beachside cafe where they forgot to charge us for the wine. Perfect. But our situation was nagging at us. Unemployed, homeless and undecided. ... read more

I can't believe I'm back in San Fran. I love this city so much, and I can't even put my finger on the reason why. It's just such a cool city. I don't think Keith was too thrilled about it (he claimed everything was "too close together," but I think that fact is part of San Fran's charm), but that could have been also due to the rain, which definitely put a damper on the day. We got up fairly early (around 7) and headed off to Crissy Field for some Golden Gate Bridge action. It wasn't really rainy yet, so we had some hope for the day, and got in some nice pictures. I liked the view of the Bridge from Crissy Field; the closest we came to it last time I was in ... read more

406 days in the rear view mirror South America (Jan 12-April 26)/ Africa (April 26-May 25)/ Turkey (May 26-June 10)/ Europe (June 10-Sept 15)/ Asia (Sept 15-Jan 15)/ Australia (Jan 15-Feb 23) As I look into the rear view mirror on the 406 days on the road during the past year, it’s an amazing kaleidoscope of memories, dramas, feelings and experiences that blur past my thoughts as I put it all in perspective some days after arriving back home. In some senses, it seems like yesterday when I boarded the SFO flight to Buenos Aires to meet Amy and hunker down into our apartment in Pallermo Soho; at other times, there are so many tales and rich days as I traversed over 50 countries on 6 continents. In this final blog, I want to share some ... read more

California, here we come... ! North America » United States » California » San Francisco By ilchicagMarch 19th 2007Drive to CaliforniaLiz Toms Wow. Long day of driving, again. The trip to Cali did turn out to be about 12 hours, but the fact that I got pulled over in Nevada might have something to do with it (don't worry... I'm an expert at getting out of ~300 dollar fines). We left Provo early in the morning and got into San Fran a good way into the evening. The drive was (not supris... read more

NOTE : Im sorry there are only 3 pictures of San Francisco here, but this computer will not let me upload anymore - more will be here asap! Sorry this is late being posted but.....AT LAST!!! I have my first bit of sunburn! This must mean that there is lots of sun, and you are correct....California staetd off with a bang - San Francisco was great for sun. We flew from Vancouver into San Francisco International Airport and caught what is called the 'BART' to central San Fran. It was actually quite a shock to the system as Vancouver was a relaxed place to be, and me and Andy didn't feel on guard at all. Then we arrived in San Francisco and it is busy, crowded and less safe, we were suprised to see the ... read more

Well for all those that were a little unsure that we would make it...we are here in the 'land of opportunity' After about 37 hours travelling including 3 breakfasts, nz, sydney and the US we made it to our room after a myriad of taxis and pedal pushers. Our first day consisted of sightseeing and shopping though we didn't buy anything. There was a great little area of shops down at Fishermans Wharf which had a fantastic shop full of music and movie memorabilia which I know John & Scott would love! Including signed Pink Floyd and Guns n Roses pics... Today was the best as we rode the cable cars down the hill to see a misty view of the Golden Gate bridge and took the ferry to The Rock. Alcatraz was all that we ... read more

San Francisco, my final stop (this time round). I settled in here and liked it from the minute I arrived, which is strange considering I had no intention of going to the USA. John found it harder to settle in after NZ. (He felt as I did when I first arrived in Auckland after leaving Australia) But we had a brills time..... As I said in previous blog, the flight was 12 hours to LA and they are 16 hours behind NZ, so Monday was a very long day. I spent the whole 2 1/2 hours at LA in queues for one reason or another, by the time I had queued at customs to enter, finger printed and photographed, along with the other thousands of travellers, my bags had been removed from the carousel, to make ... read more
