Anyway gotta run. PS Lesley we got your message thanks and we got a big book of postcards....:) Just to add its now our last day in San fran and its been pouring rain. Lots of fun stuff going on in California. Right now I am in the Marin Headlands, which is just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a cool hostel here and some beautiful scenery. I went surfing today, kinda cold, my toes got feeling back about an hour after I got out of the water. I also visited the Marine Mammal Center where they rescue animals and rehab them. They have some wild stories about huge seals ending up in parking lots and being shot by crossbows and stuff. They have helped tons of animals, and these darn things are unbelievably cute! So I left my Aunts on friday and headed up to San Fran. I gave Kate a ride and she shared some great snacks and stories. I broke the screen on my camera ... read more

Hi All Back online again this time at the Hotel Nikko. This morning was time to make the swap from the Crowne Plaza (very nice indeed) and move to the Hotel Nikko in O'Farrell St. I have to admit I did have a small amount of trepidation after reading some reviews about the Nikko but it is a really nice hotel. We arrived early and were put even further upstairs than originally planned and the room is really nicely appointed and spacious. We wandered around the town again and then made our way back down to Market St where we grabbed lunch at Maccas!! From there we tried getting a taxi down to Flax to purchase Art supplies (unsuccessfully) although we did find Pears and did really well. An interesting factor was as we went further ... read more

San Francisco Monday Hi All, well as you saw last night we arrived in San Francisco, so today we went looking around the city. It is quite interesting, not at all like Brisbane or Sydney. Many old buildings with a truly old feel (given that much of the city was rebuilt after the 1906 Earthquake). We visited Macy’s (Claire I lost your cousins details somewhere and although I did go to the Lingerie Dept I couldn’t find her) and yes did buy some goodies (you should see my jeans!!) We saw lots of fire engines rushing around the city…..and the grates in the middle of the road seemed to smoke although we have not yet come up with an accurate reason but we seem to guess it might be something to do with the fault lines ... read more

We arrived in San Francisco aprox 4.5hrs late last night. That seems to be par for the course on the longer western routes on Amtrak. After chatting with the conductor for a short while, he wrote out a small note with a transfer ticket which gave us a free bus ride from the train station in Emeryville, CA to the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The ride would only have cost us $12 but free sounds even better! Though the trains run late most of the time, Amtrak has a great policy of comping either a hotel room or additional travel to make it up to you. The conductor wrote that note as a favor saying that if anyone asked, we should just tell them that the train being late caused us to miss the ride ... read more

It was fitting that I end my 6-month journey with a long train ride across the Western USA. I flew from Thailand to San Francisco via a long stop-over in Seoul, Korea. I only was in Frisco for a day so I didn't get to see much, but what I saw of it I liked. Seems like an exciting city. Basically just had the afternoon to walk around. Strolled through North Beach (Little Italy) and Chinatown and visited a Beat museum. Apart from my jetlag and lack of sleep I was also disoriented by my walk through Chinatown and by seeing all these Thai restaurants after having just went through Bangkok's Chinatown a couple days before. Which country am I in again? Oh yeah! Speaking english, Subway sandwhiches, water fountains, brushing my teeth without fear of ... read more

Another 12 hours to go before we take off. This trip is going to be interesting because we have both been sick in the past couple of weeks and we have to see how we take to this much travel in the next few weeks. You never know unless you try :). Having said that, we are definitely looking forward to it. For those inclined to dabble in numbers, here are some: Days in vacation: 18 Number of countries: 5 Number of cities: 8 (atleast) Number of different flights: 11 Number of different airlines: 6 Total miles roundtrip: 21100 Now for the reason behind the title of this post. One of the operational difficulties of such a plan is that one needs to call six different airlines to confirm 11 segments, not fun at all. Different ... read more

This time around it is the turn of the Far East to host the AR's. And of course, a customary quickstop on home turf. Here are a few of the stops that are planned: Feb 4-6: Hong Kong Feb 6-8: Angkor Wat, Cambodia Feb 9: Phnom Penh, Cambodia Feb 10-12: Bangkok, Thailand Feb 12-14: Chennai, India Feb 14-19: Kerala, India Feb 20: Singapore Feb 21: Back to base! The lady AR this time around unfortunately, is Dr. AR with long work weeks, so she doesn't feel like she has planned it quite well enough. We'll see what Mr. AR thinks of that at the end of the trip - stay tuned for updates! A quick note on the attached photo - we raided our neighborhood library and wiped out all guidebooks and videos that had anything ... read more

....You know how the rest of it goes. However that is the only line of the song I actually know so it gets a bit boring singing just the one line over and over. So we're on our last day of San Fran today and we're just killing time at the moment in our hostel before we get our Greyhound to San Diego later tonight. Well we've been here for four days and Gary has already said he wants to live here. I'm counting the times he says that and already I think we'll be living all over the place as he seems to want to live everywhere we've been so far. Once we had arrived at our hostel after our wonderful Greyhound journey we decided to take advantage of the free waffle breakfast which is ... read more
