It was 2 o'clock in the morning. I was tapping my foot and looking at the time every 1/2 a second. Where was everyone when I needed them? I talked to Viola, my brief German friend, for a few minutes, but couldn't concentrate. I needed a place to sleep! I didn't end up partying all night long like I should have been, and was supposed to meet up with my friend Nick at midnight so we could head to his place and get some shut-eye. Well, that had fallen through too, I guessed. And so I dragged my body, which was already asleep, to the check in counter. "Hey guys. Looks like I am staying here another night." Like every hostel, it had come to feel like home, and the charges were adding up. I handed ... read more

Well, I arrived yesterday in pouring rain. Sort of like Wellington rain - cold and heavy, except it fell vertically. Here's a pic of the financial district in the rain... It was a quiet Sunday and easy enough to orient myself towards a hostel. It's a friendly place. Last night I went to a jazz show about three blocks away with a french winemaker and a manhattan based "education broker". It was great. We walked back to the hostel around the (deserted) waterfront at 1am. img=http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o29/W... read more

I have to get sidetracked a little and remember the mountains. I was out of breath, we weren't really walking fast, but it was all uphill, steep, steep, steep. Fawn and Glenn were ahead of me, I lagged behind and Fawn's dog Jessie kept pausing to look back, make sure I was still in sight. I grabbed onto a tree branch as I stepped over a root, and I noticed that my hands felt funny. I could hardly make a fist, it was like those few minutes after you wake up in the morning, when you can't grip anything too hard because your fingers havn't moved much all night and they gotta get used to it again. A few minutes later, "Ow, Jeez!" Seth's ring was cutting off the blood circulation to my finger! What was ... read more

Sometimes I don't even use a map. I just fill up my water bottle and head in a general direction. Sometimes this is good, sometimes this is bad. Most always, it is an adventure. Like yesterday when I stumbled upon the Presidio graveyard. It was like being on another planet. A planet of bright bleach white and green, green grass with a blue, blue sky. Then I stumbled upon a twisted little path, I was crawling on my knees at one point, and then up again-woah! Check it out! What a great view...ooops, sorry. The little rocky beach was deserted but for a pair of nude sun-bathing lovers. Baker beach: I fell asleep. So good to nap on the warm sand! The sound of the waves and the gulls... and the occasional wipeout of the rookie ... read more

I think there are only a few other times where I have been this physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted at the same time. I only have four minutes left from the $2 I put into the computer, so this entry will be short and sweet. And over. Right now. So here's a picture to keep you comin' back for more. Hahaha. ... read more

ok so its taken a while to get started but here goes... first stop San Francisco I arrived into San Fran at 9am on 23 Nov - Thanksgiving! I was a bit worried everything would be closed as people celebrated at home however the airport was definitely buzzing with everyone flying in to visit family. I got a shuttle to the Green Tortoise hostel, the biggest backpackers in San Fran, which turned out to be an awesome place to stay!! It was really central to the city and the bay so I spent my first day thoroughly jet-lagged as I wandered around the area. It was a glorious day (particularly for San Fran) - clear blue skies and sunshine and a crisp 17 degrees... quite refreshing after the recent heat in Sydney. I walked down to ... read more

So the Hawaiian Extravaganza is just three days away and I am doing laundry... and running errands and all that stuff one must do before one leaves for 10 days. It is hard to believe that the trip is finally here. So Friday it is off to Maui via Honolulu and then relaxing time. I hope you enjoy coming along via my words. Peace, Don ... read more

Last year it was New Zealand. This year? Hawaii. Maui, actually. And Napili Bay to be more precise. So why not dust off the travel blog since it was such a hit the last time? This year I cannot promise color commentary about dragging my mother through the outback, as the old girl is setting up her new homestead in Arizona. But it's a pretty safe bet that at some point over the next 10 days I'll be: * Drunk * Sunburned * Both Plus we're going with some friends, so you can always chart our progress from bosom buddies to not speaking to each other by the return flight. And that always spells fun, people. You know it does. Join us (virtually), won't you?... read more

Another day in San Fran, and this time a mission of discovery. Firstly it's worth pointing out that seeing Golden Gate bridge yesterday turned out to tbe one of the all time great plans, because today was gloomy, misty, rainy, grey...getting me ready for a return to England me thnks. Anyway seeing as all was looking bleak I decided to go and see Golden Gate park (bad idea), and then look around the birth place of the hippy movement in the 60's - Haight Ashbury. A very cool district and lots of fun just looking around at the shops and all the street art on the walls. How nobody from San Fran that i've met on my travels has told me to go to this place i have no idea. It's fantastic. Thought i'd keep this ... read more
