There's no doubt you know that you're in the USA when you get here. Having been in South America for so long, at times it's a mystery as to what time zone, what currency, what day, heck, what country you're in. However here in the US of A you're left in no doubt as to where you are. Things started slightly..'interestingly' as i had no address for Uncle Nick here in San Francisco. This meant the authorities decided to double check everything about the floppy haired Brit arriving from El Salvador..."why are you here ?", "why would anyone want to travel for a year ?", "why are there llamas on your guitar case ?". In fact they ended up taking me away to the (effect a huge American accent) 'secondary interrorgation area' and questioning me at ... read more

Heeey! This time is not my fauld that I didn't post so long. i wanted to, but the computer didn't let me. my communication isn't that good right now anyway. first I broke the charger of my phone. because they don't have it anymore I had to buy a new phone. Basically, my communication should work again. But no, smart as I am I forgot my charger on the last day at work in the office. Of course before a long weekend. So yah, I haven't been up there yet. But I will do it today. I have a meeting there anyways. Meetings... That reminds me of what i am doing right now. The stockmarket competition started. Not the competition, the preparation for it. i organize everything and I have to teach the students (which is ... read more

Today we were woken up by the sound of a Helicopter hovering outside our hotel window at 8.00am. I opened the curtains to see it slowly disappearing down between the two buildings opposite us. It then reappeared with some construction equipment slung below which it then placed on top of one of the buildings. After breakfast we ventured out to explore San Francisco. Our first experience was 'Crazy Street' where every 5 yards there appeared another crazy person, people talking or singing to themselves, people shouting at themselves or somebody else. There were people standing on the pavement selling absolutely anything!! One woman was standing there with a packet of Kellogs rice krispies in her hand which she was trying to sell. Every street corner had some sort of street entertainer on it including one man ... read more

Today we woke up to find that it had rained overnight and was looking like more to come. We set of for an uneventful drive from Fresno to San Francisco. When we arrived the weather had brightened up so because we were too early to book into our hotel we took a drive over the Golden Gate bridge. After taking some photos we drove up to some higher viewpoints to take some more. On our way back to the hotel we made a detour down Lombard Street which is famous for being the crookedest street in San Francisco. More on San Francisco tomorrow.... read more

The gals visited Google and UC Berkeley today. Google was an amazing place - even tho' i've visited it once in Mar but it's still fun to meet up with folks from Google again...after so long. Emily from Google is now expecting a boy...hmm..and of course, my travelling partner and colleague, WL, a little baby also...exciting eh?! Meredith, our host for the day, has planned a good programme for them and that includes a tour of the facilities, talks by software engineer Neha and also a showcase of how Google earth can be used by Megan Goddard, a Senior GIS specialist. Of course the tour also included an impromptu speech by Meng - a fellow singaporean who is one of the few who was with Google when it started up. Hmmm..he must be a rich fella ... read more

San Fransisco is a brilliant city and I am so happy i went back an visited it again. I would say it is probably the best city in the U.S. There is so much to do and it is so spectacular, from any type of cuisine you want to amazing scenery. The hills are pretty hard on the old legs though so if any one does go there I would advise going on the tram. they are steep. The beaches there are pretty cool however the water is something else )bloody freezing). I think there was a reason why noone escasped Alcatraz. Obviously I had to do the touristy part of going over to Alcatraz and look at the cell which house Al Capone. Its a really good tour though and not a bad price, but ... read more

Our weekend was spent at Tech Museum, Roaring Camp at Henry Cowell Redwoods (redwoods incidentally refers to a type of tree..that is so so tall..at least 250m to 450m) that are found all over Palto Alto area. On Monday, we visited Stanford University, sat in to a psychology lecture, chit-chat with the current undergraduates, masters and phd students as well as take a tour of the campus. At night we visited the NUS college at Silicon valley where current NUS students are on attachment to startups in the valley. As part of SF sightseeing, we finally managed to find time to go Lombard Street which has a super steep incline and all of us climbed or jog up the slope (along the pedestrian path of course!). It was a crooked street that was teeming with tourists ... read more

Today was spent at Oracle and Intel museum. It was interesting to re-visit Oracle this time round with the students. It was great to catch up with Bernie who was the first one who shared with us on Think.com. Yep it's a long time since Mar this year but we are happy that now our students have become the first Singapore school to use this platform for the worldwide collaboration for groups going overseas! Every student on this trip has an account and Shi Min led the team of students on the sharing of this platform. Afternoon at Intel - gals did an interesting tour of how Intel started...did u know when did Intel started their marketing campaign to do the "5 note" music branding as well as the logo with "Intel inside"? It was such ... read more

The second day was spent at Adobe Inc in Townsend street -right in the midst of SF. The line up they have done for the girls were great and the gals had a good time walking round the office place, shown some of the best sites done and also listened to some inspiring stories on how one guy brought a company from a start-up to listing within 4 years! The same guy is now working in Adobe..which means that life is all about being able to adapt and change. Our host, Johann was trained in drama yet went on to be the marketing manager at Adobe..something that he told the girls - whatever u learnt is never wasted and u need not necessarily be trained in IT to be in IT line :) of course, my ... read more
