The bus journey to Phnom penh was ok...only 6 hours! I met an English girl on the bus who I ended up travelling with through Cambodia. Anyway we arraived in Phnom Penh and headed to the Lakeside which I was told was the best place to go. There had been loads of rain before we arrived so the lake had flooded a load of the hostels, including the one we stayed at. We arrived quite late so we caught a moped to the riverside where a load of restaurants are. We met an Ausie couple...they seem to be everywhere! and ended up spending the evening with them on the beers. After the night out we sat by the bar on the lakeside watching the rats scuttle about...nice! The following morning we decided to move to the ... read more
I caught a flight from Hanoi down to Saigon which only took a couple of hours. I caught a moped from the airport to the main backpacker street where I decided to stay. The main thing I wanted to arrange was a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels and also the war museum so I arranged the trips the following day. The war museum was realy interesting although abit graphic. I was just about to leave when the rain started coming down...really heavy rain! This old Vietnamese dude invited me into his shop and pulle dup a chair for me. We ended up drinking something out of this bottle with no label on....apparently it makes you strong...I was getting kidney pains after ever sip! Basically ended up having an hour long conversation with him. He couldn't ... read more
After all the long boat/bus rides etc I was so glad I caught a plane to Hanoi. It only took us 45 minutes instead of 16 hours! The bus ride from the airport to our hotel was so funny. Its unbeleivable how they drive here. Basically the general rules are little gives way to big or you die... Oh yeah and you have to honk your horn every couple of seconds! Because we arrived late and were tired we kind of ended up in a shit area of the city. It was nice and everything but it was just really out of the way. We went for some noodle soup which is a local dish they eat here. We sat on the corner of a street on tiny chairs (really common here) and ate a meal ... read more
After Chiangmai I headed to Laos with a Swedish couple I met on the trek. The journey was probably the worst yet since travelling! Left CM at 10pm, arrived at the border at 6am, waited another 2 hours at the border then a 3 hour journey in the back of a pickup truck followed by 6 hours down the Mekong river....it sucked so bad! We actually missed the 'Slow boat' at the Mekong and had to catch it up on one of the speedboats they have! They are so dodgy...basically a longboat with a massive engine strapped to the back! They skim on top of the water at high speed and I've heard loads of stories of them hitting logs in the river and 'Disintegrating' Hence the dodgy helmets they make you wear haha! Anyway we ... read more
After Bangkok I caught an overnight bus to Chiang Mai which is way up north. I originally intended to do a two day one night trek in the jungle but luckily there were not enough people so I got put on the three day two night instead. The group we had was excellent and everyone had a laugh. After a couple of hours trek we reached the first stop where we stayed the night in this little village. Unfortunatly I hadn't drunk enough water so spent the first night feeling like shite and having an early one. The following day we trekked to another village for lunch. It was so remote and only had one family of five living there. There was a little Thai kid who was really hyper who tried explaining a card game ... read more
I arrived in Bangkok at 5am after a 12 hour train journey from down south and headed straight for Khao San Road which is where all the backpackers hangout. It was exactly as I remember it! 6am and people were still out boozing and loads of dirty old men hangin out with young Thai girls... I ended up staying in the same hotel I stayed at 6 years ago when I came here with hannah! I spent the first day shopping and then in the evening I met up with a couple of guys from London and ended up doing a tour of the city on a tuk tuk. Our driver 'John' was hillarious! We came out of this bar and he appeared out of nowhere holding a card with all the shows he could take ... read more
After Langkawi we caught another ferry which took us into Thailand. Luckily the weather was ALOT better on this trip and it was alot shorter... Once we arrived at Satun in Thailand we caught a bus which took us all the way to Krabi which is on the West coast of Thailand. We stayed at this really nice guest house for a couple of nights which was abit of luxury after coming from Malaysia and it was also dirt cheap :o) We done the usual...boozing/sunbathing in Krabi for a couple of days which was cool. The beach there was pretty laime anyway so we decided to move onto a place further down the coast called Hat Ton Sai, which is where all the climbers go because of the excellent cliff faces you get there. We only ... read more
After loads of people telling me Phuket was a shithole I decided to get over to the East Coast and meet up with everyone else! I was sat on the top deck of the ferry chatting to this girl when I heard someone calling my name! I looked around and Luke/Caroline were on the ferry next to me! They were also heading to Ko Sumui so I arranged to meet them where they were staying. After the boat trip I caught a coach and then another ferry to Ko Sumui. I tried getting a taxi at Ko Sumui but they were really expensive so I decided to try one of the moped taxis! It was cheap and certainly an experience sat on the back of a moped with my massive bag hanging off the back! I ... read more
These entries are gonna be abit vague because I havn't updated anything for ages! After the jungle we caught another bus upto the East coast where we caught a high speed boat to the islands. The weather was amazing so we were loving chilling on the beach because since we arrived in Asia it had been overcast most the time... I decided to do my Advanced scuba diving course which was excellent. The diving was amazing and I saw loads of different fish, including a shark and turtle which was cool. I also went on a night dive which was certainly an experience! Apart from the diving we just hung about on the beach because theres really not alot else to do there. Justin decided to head back to the mainland so he could get the ... read more
We caught a bus from KL to a small port which was a 3 hour long boat trip into the jungle. We only had 2 full days in the jungle, but we managed to do the Canopy walk which is basically a some rickety walkway 45metres above the jungle floor which was scary. We went on another boat trip up the river and through some rapids which was interested...got absolutly soaked! On the same trip we stopped at a village which was abit shit!...Basically loads of tourists walking around there homes whilst they watch..crap! We had a go on one of their blowpipes though which was cool. We done a couple of day/night treks though the jungle so saw a few animals and stuff. Oh yeah and some local guy tried stealing this guys wallet in ... read more
