Day 34, Wednesday 27 June 2007 - Palenque and the ruins We spent the morning at the site of the Mayan ruins in Palenque, which were amazing and considered by I think everyone in the group to be the best so far. Would have been better if it hadn´t been at least 35 degrees, stinking hot and humid, but still, they were fantastic. The site is believed to have been built mainly between the 7th and 10th centuries AD, although artefacts have been found that date back to 300 BC. Strangely though, the city was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. Our guide told us that it could be because the Mayans had pretty much used up all of the natural resources in the area and so moved on. Over the years, the jungle simply ... read more

We packed up and caught a boat at 10am to Belize City to reboard our Tucan bus for the trip to Bacalar, Mexico. Crossing the border into Mexico was a bit more involved than usual. It cost $37.50 BZ ($17.25US) each to leave Belize and nothing to enter Mexico. We had to show our own passports, fill out declarations forms, and carry all our luggage across for the entry into Mexico. Our hotel, Hotel Laguna, was only 30 or 40 minutes from the border and just outside Bacalar, right on the lake. The hotel is really cool and should be rated higher than the 2 or 3 stars, but apparently lacks some of the upkeep requirements such as paint, etc. We got a nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake, nicely tiled bath, but ... read more

On next stop was to Queretaro, which is approx. 1 hour from San Miguel de Allende. We decided to stay just one night in Queretaro, which was perfect timing because the night we stayed Mexico was playing. As you can see from one of the photos, it is a popular night to go out! The historic center of Queretaro is fairly compact, with andadores (pedestrian streets), linking a number of lively plazas, but in my opinion the main attraction it's acueducto/aqueduct outside of the center of the city. The acueducto, with 74 towering arches was built between 1726 and 1735 and still brings water to the center of the city from 12 km away. After walking around for part of the day, I realized one day and night is plenty in Queretaro. I enjoyed Guanajuato ... read more

Alright I wrote that in a rush and realized that I forgot a lot of important stuff and just wrote skin deep about the experience and some about bars. My bad, its just that the nightlife is the most famous part of Acapulco. Here are a couple of good stories. We watched the US mexico football (soccer to all yall back in the states) at a bar (there arent really restuarnts, just bars) on sunday which was lot of fun. When mexico scored the first goal, confetti blew up all over the place and everyone went wild. fog horns blew and there was incredibly loud music that could've only passed for music in a place like this. we won the game and everyone was quiet except for us. i was surprised that we didnt get attacked, ... read more

Day 33, Tuesday 26 June 2007 - Palenque and waterfalls Today was a long driving day, with a departure from San Cristobal at 6.30 on our only private bus for the trip. We had two stops along the way though, at some waterfalls. The first stop was after yet another crappy bus ride, as the roads around these parts are very winding. I have to admit, I haven´t seen nearly as much desert in the country as I have hills and green mountains! The first falls were breaktaking though. Azul Agua. Damned hot though and humid. I think the temps around these parts are around 35, which is just murder on me! The second falls were (I think ) Mesal-Ha. Pretty, but in no way as impressive as the first falls. Interesting bit though is ... read more

The flight from LA was pretty cool, plenty of leg space. got myself tucked up in our little hotel then waited for Clo to arrive the next day. Had bought some Tequila and Tequila Mixer the grand total of four quid for Margaritas to welcome her with. Stayed in Downtown Cancun, but it was only a short hop to get the ferry to the Isla Mujeres where we had an excellent day, sunbathing , swimming and quaffing cocktails. Even had a nice bit of very fresh fish for lunch! the only down side on the food for Clo was that everything had Chilli in it, even the stuff that shouldnt have had (and breakfast!!) only had a couple of days in cancun then headed to Cozumel via Playa Del Carmen. The mexican coaches were the best ... read more

ok Acapulco was absurd. I'll try to go in chronological order becuase so much happened that I can't really say it all, plus I'm not sure who all is reading this and some things are a little too crazy... We bungie jumped the first day which was a lot of fun, and a fitting way to begin Acapulco. Later that night, we went back to Paradise (the bar where we jumped) for a friend's 21st, and we bought him a jump (he wasn't with us earlier in the day). The next day we went to San Diego fort where we saw Japanese tourists who looked even less integrated into Mexican culture and then went to the local market where I got some more comfy sandals and my went shopping. We didn't buy much, saving money for ... read more

Day 31, Sunday 24 June 2007 - San Cristobal Last nights bus journey would have to be the worst bus trip I´ve ever been on! LOL I would rather take a whole tour of overnight trains in China (even with Brian) than get on another overnight bus!!! It was one of the worst roads in history. Bumpy, winding, twisty, turny, up and down and just awful! Plus it was at night and you can´t see anything out the window to get your bearings and when you can, all you see if cliff next to you! Never again! Thank goodness its the only one! Anyway! We arrived at our hotel in San Cristobal about 10am and went to breakfast. Today was a bit of a wipeout, as it rained fairly heavily in the afternoon. We still ... read more

North America » Mexico » Michoacán » Morelia June 24th 2007

After a grueling first week of school I was really looking forward to the weekend. I had decided to take advantage of the fact that my brother was going to the coast for buisness and tag along to go spend the weekend in Lazaro Cardenas, a beach town about three hours away. Katie decided to join me and so did one of Edgars friends. The four of us left on Friday night, arriving in Lazaro at 10ish. On the drive over I got a good look at the country that I am in. Morelia is surrounded by mountains, shrouded in fog and blue from a distance. After passing the mountains we drove through the aread of Uruapan (famous for its exportation of avocados and marijuana) it was so muggy and hot during the drive we ... read more
