Since I didn't convince Manoli to do another tour, the ruins of Uxmal, today was pretty much a chill and do nothing day. First we went further downtown to the main market, where they had dozens and dozens of booths selling meat, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and anything else you can imagine. Next, we decided to head uptown to the ritzy district and check out the local Wal-Mart. Very different in both appearance and products from the stores back in the U.S. We bought a bunch of local fruit; papaya, mango, watermelon, cantelope, oranges, pineapple, and a strange guanabana. We also got two types of local cheeses and bread. The manchego cheese was almost goopy by the time we returned to the hostel and the gonela or somesuch as very sharp and pretty much inedible. We ... read more

Had a couple of inquiries about Belize tonight, so thought I'd share. Rodger Christopher, from Beaumont, has properties in Belize and one is a rental. http://sitteeriverlodge.com/index.html is the website. He's a dive master, hiker, super hyped guy and still loves me when I drink all the beer in the village (which isn't much - the beer or the village). But he definitely knows the areas to take you to! He can take you fishing if you want too, and if I'm there, I'll be the deckhand ! Reality is that Sittee River Village is in the middle of the country, in the jungle, and is an experience on it's own. Rodger can do the dive / fishing things off the coast though too. Y'all might know him as owner of Gulf Coast Dive shop on Dowlen ... read more

OK, I've combined a few days here, as they were a fairly quiet few days... Sunday 1 July 2007 - Cancun and Playa del Carmen Today we took a local bus about 60kms to the local tourist spot of Playa del Carmen, which turned out to be a gorgeous spot. Right on the Caribbean (baby!) with the most gorgeous blue waters I've seen in a long time, plus a white sandy beach. Just heavenly. Except for the heat and humidity, of course!!! It really was unbearably hot, with even Toni saying that it was hot and thats really saying something. Despite the heat, we had a good few hours of shopping, with lunch thrown in. I think I bought the most I've bought so far. A new skirt, new swimmers (bathers, togs, etc!), a singlet ... read more

Leaving Mexico Our last week in Mexico was bitter sweet. The kids are ready to return. They miss there friends and want to be back in our home. I am sad, but also excited about our drive home. On Monday we agree on the departure date and set the weeks plans. We spend a lot of time talking about our time in Mexico and how we have all enjoyed the experience. Out last 3 days proved to be a bit rough. First, we planned to leave on Saturday morning. Wednesday morning I was working on the blog when suddenly, I started feeling pretty bad. My stomach was doing flips and in between flips it sounded like there were 6 foot swells. Within 30 minutes I was in bed feeling much like a person that has drank ... read more

This is a little shorter than planned seeing as we lost some material when the site crashed, although we didn't have a heap of photo's from central america any way. So we landed in Mexico city and spent a few days wandering around what is actually a really cool city. There are big open squares and avenues as well as little lanes and cosy cafe's, just out of the city is a big Mayan site with massive pyramids. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that a lot of the city is sinking. There are actually entire blocks that are skewed because one end is slowly dropping into what used to be a swamp. One of the big churches has dropped about 2 meters, meaning it now has a bridge from the street to the door. We ... read more

La Paz, BCS, Mexico … June 28, 2007 Stepped off the 50 passenger plane and was assailed by 38 degrees Celsius! Talk about stepping into an oven… THIS was it! Have now endured heat, cold, wind and wet. What else is there? Bring it on!! I suppose landslide, earthquake and volcanic eruption are possible … but how likely? Met a woman who owns a house near La Paz. She gave me a map of the city. That made landing and getting to downtown much less stressful. I always like to have a map…then I know where I am!! The airport is somewhat out of town and ‘un taxi collectivo’ cost $15US. A regular taxi would have cost $28. The only travel agent I could find was nice enough to phone the Hotel Yeneka for me ... read more

After having our free coffee and toast breakfast, we boarded the tour bus for Chichen-Itza. The trip took a bit more than 1 1/2 hours. We all bought our 95 Pesos entrance tickets and wristbands and again I paid for a video pass (35 Pesos this time). Our first stop was the Temple El Castillo. This is the temple where the stairs look like a serpent on each side during the vernal equinox. Very cool, even without the serpent shadows. The guide gave very good explanations (ours was in Spanish for Manoli, but they also provided an English guide) as we wandered thru the many well-restored buildings. Besides the numerous temples, they also had some ruling-class residences, a walkway of columns, a large cenote and the observatory. Again, we found a number of iguanas and ... read more

Hi All We have moved on from Mexico city to a place called Oaxaca, its a bit more chilled out and we are spending a few days here relaxing until we move on at great speed over a large distance. we arrived here easily enough having negotiated the subway to get to the bus station in mexico city how ever once we had been dropped of at the terminal we realised that we had no idea where the hostel was. We hoisted on our rucksacks and set of walking reasured by a local policeman that it wasnt far. Half an hour later under the burning sun with heavy backpacks we arrived at the hostel. As you can imagin the first thing i did was grab a beer, the second thing was jump in the pool, ... read more

THE HOTEL This place is so much fun I recommend it for the alternative traveller and adventure seeker on a budget. Right downtown and terribly stimulating. Madero No.1520 e/ 16 de SeptembreE Indeptendencia, La PAz, BCS, Mexico. Tel y Fax 01 612 125 4688. Email: ynkmacias@prodigy.net.mx .... elycerecer67@hotmail.com Happy to report luckily brought my orange YMCA t-shirt for loungewear since I have been assigned room #20 … the yellow and orange room. Lesson learned: turn on all taps to see a) if they work and b) is there enough pressure in the pipes to send the water in the shower far enough away from the wall so that hugging the wall during ones libation is not necessary. It is a fifty year old hotel. The courtyard and every other spot that can hold, hang or ... read more
