What a long day! I was up at 5am to catch my flight from SF to LA then LA to Mexico City. And just when you want everything to run smoothly, of course it didn´t. As I was getting ready I noticed my Gortex jacket still had the security tag from the store attached. Having seen somebody remove one with a lighter, I attempted to do the same thing. Disaster -- the alarm went off and was still attached to the jacket. The bloody thing was so loud, I ran out to the balcony of Matt´s apartment hoping to stomp the alarm to death. I managed to remove the security tag but the bloody thing wouldn´t stop beeping so the best thing I could do was stick it in a pot plant on the balcony. I ... read more

The truck found me... a day later than anticipated. Spent a day hot sweaty and bum sore waiting for a call from the Karen. None came... rebooked the room I had left in the morning... showered ... went out to eat a Mexican Combination at the La Perla Hotel, while watching the Saturday evening traffic pass by on foot and in vehicles along the Malecon. The fish soup at Playa Tecolote was much more exciting than the presented four renditions of tortillas ... wrapped, crisped, deep fried and melted... all with cheese the same colour and had it not been for the spoonful of refried beans in the middle of it all and the left over salsa from the chip apperitif it would have been a meal bland beyond description. It has been made clear to ... read more

San Luis Potosi, Mexico Well, here we are in San Luis Potosi and Iraq seems a long time ago. We know everyone thought we were a bit loco moving down here and in the last couple of days we were quick to agree with them. The first week in a new place is always stressful and when you add the fact of an unfamiliar language and customs it makes it worse, but we are pulling through. By day three we have found and moved into more permanent accomodation and are slowing picking up the language. Our Spanish class starts in 2 days and our stress had reduced to a manageable level. When we arrived Polly (our own personal saint) immediately took us hotel hunting in the historical center of the city. We looked through about ... read more

I arrived in Zacatecas after a 9 hour bus ride which was supposed to take only 5 hours (I guess I better get used to Mexican time!). I arrived at about 9 PM and it was pouring rain once again while I was looking for somewhere to stay. After about an hour of looking for a place, I stumbled upon Hostel Villa Cononial, which would become my home for the next three nights. The hostel was an amazing bargain about 9 bucks per night with a rooftop patio that had a view of the city like NO OTHER and was located right in the city center!! I hung out for a bit talking to some Anthropology students about their experiences living with and studying the indigineous tribes and languages of the Chichimec Indians before going ... read more

This weekend's trip to Guadalajara was a fun break from school. I left Morelia with Katie, and two other girls (Erika and Lindsay) from UCSD on Thursday after class. The four hour bus ride to Guad. was nice than I thought. I was expecting crammed buses with no AC but we took a straight route there on a delux bus (since it is safest) and so it was very comfy. The first night in Guad we decided to go find a disco, where we met another American, and her two Mexican friends. They turned out to be a sketchy trio and so we left early (2am is early in Mexico) however, while waiting for a taxi we met some Mexican students and ended up hanging out with them the rest of the evening. Its really ... read more

Well, we made it across the border with ease. got the green light everytime. Driving was not so bad, nice hwy for next to the border. By 5 pm, we were arriving in the outskirts of Monterrey. Driving into this city was hellish. I cut someone off, and they slowed to let me know. The lanes were decieving, I was doing the best I could! What a mess! We got to our hostel in one piece. El hostel aqui esta muy tranquil! Went out to a club, visited the historia de mexico museo, and fed the hungry on sunday. Grilled cheese sanwiches, juice, and bananas. I am dealing with some poison ivy that showed up a day after I left the woods in Arkansas, the mexico heat does not help, although, I am looking forward to ... read more

Back from vacation! North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida By Pattusa July 1st 2007 Patt Barrington My troubadour for only $1 USDBack from vacation! Isn't that a wild thing to say? I go home to Texas for two weeks to take care of business, but really I partied almost the whole time, and now I come back to the Yucatan to work and enjoy!! I managed to see so many friends this trip down (or I guess up). I'm not going to attempt to name everyone for fear of leaving someone out and there's simply not enough blog space! Did manage to go to all my favorite watering holes (including private homes). The Alibi's party on the 21st was great. Wish all of you could have made it. George came in from a fast ... read more
