Mike & Kathy

Hayesworld

Two Americans who claim Oregon as home, yet find ourselves living mostly in other countries. We love to travel and are on a quest to see the world! We started out by selling everything we owned and hitting the open road in an RV. That was back in the summer of 2003 and we never looked back; and yes, we are still going and going and going... Life should be an adventure, and each day a new journey! If you want to be notified each time we update our blog you can click on SUBSCRIBE. This will send you an alert email each time we update.

It’s been a good long time since our last entry, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been sitting still. The last blog was in June 2010 and since then we haven’t been doing anything earth shattering or especially interesting so you haven’t missed a thing. We begin with last summer. After a month of playing camp host at Catherine Creek state park, in Eastern Oregon and only 20 miles from Kathy’s family, we traveled deeper into the gold mining history of Oregon to a place called Sumpter. It’s a small town for sure….no stoplights, 2 restaurants, 1 general store and 1 gas station; perfect for us. This was one of the best jobs we have had since we started volunteering at the state parks. Our RV site sat just off the main road and behind the ... read more

Hi everyone. We are on the move again, this time to Catherine Creek State Park which is about 10 miles outside of Union in eastern Oregon and it’s been interesting. Catherine Creek is very pretty with a small campground of only 20 spots for camping. They are all classed as “primitive”, which means no RV hookups, except at the Camp Host site, giving us all the conveniences including a phone line which means we have access to dialup internet but no cell phone access. We do have 2 buildings with flush toilets and some water faucets scattered around the grounds though. A mix of beautiful evergreen and broadleaf trees surrounds a picturesque creek which runs alongside the campground with a foot bridge over the water leading to some easy hiking trails. The only downside is the ... read more

How long has it been since we blogged??? That long??? You may have the following questions…. Have Mike & Kathy lost the ability to type?....Have they gone to live with a tribe of primitives in the mountains of Borneo and turned their back on the modern world?..have they stopped traveling?...Are they dead? No to all of the above. We did take a travel break, sort of. We went on a tour of China in spring 2009 and I’m still trying to write that blog and get it published but it’s slow going. I’ll catch you up on things. After China we flew from Hongkong back to Oregon to visit family for a couple of weeks then kept going south back to our little house in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. And there we planted ourselves for ... read more

Switching Countries Getting from Vietnam to Cambodia was an easy 2 hour flight from Hanoi to Siem Reap. The airport at Siem Reap is very nice, clean and modern. Apparently, it is run by a French company; this is what we were told by our Cambodian driver. Regardless, it is a great small airport with a quick, easy, stress-free flow to it. You purchase your visa on the spot, before processing through Immigration and then grab your bags and go… easy. Our hotel driver was waiting for us just outside and 15 minutes later we were at our temporary home for the next 7 days. We stayed at the Golden Banana, a complex divided up into 3 separate levels of comfort. The most basic is the B&B for $25 a night, next to that is the ... read more

Planes, Trains & a Birthday 17 April 2009 - Well, after some needed down-time, our travel spirits were recharged and it time to move on. Our final destination was the mountain town of Sapa and it involved several modes of transport to get there. First involved an easy flight from Hue to Hanoi, where we would catch our over-night train to Sapa. The Hue airport was small with almost no security checking at all. We landed in the clean spacious Hanoi airport to see our favorite site; someone standing outside holding a sign with our names written on it and our hotel name. This nice guy guided us out to the front made a quick call on his mobile phone and our very nice car pulled up to take us to our hotel in the old ... read more

Once the DMZ for the North & South 16 April 2009 Hue It was a 4 hour bus ride from Hoi An to our next destination, the city of Hue. Pronounced “Way”, it was the DMZ for the North & South border, back when the country was divided. We were told by many to expect cooler weather, for it was at a slightly higher elevation. Wrong! It was just as hot and sticky as our last location with a tiny breeze in the evening. Once off the bus (cramped with sad A/C) we made our way to our hotel, and our choice turned out to be a good one. The Amigo Hotel is located near the center of everything and getting around was quite easy. Everyone at the hotel was very polite and all smiles. They ... read more

The Long, Bumpy Road to Hoi An From Da Lat we took a nice air conditioned bus to the nearby beach town of Nha Trang then caught the over-night, sleeper bus to Hoi An; the next stop in our journey through Vietnam. The “Sleeper” bus was a new experience for us. It was a fairly new bus fitted out with sleeper pods; as many as they could fit in there plus a toilet cubicle. They assign seats/sleepers when you buy the ticket, but you don’t get to choose. When the bus pulled in (on time) we got in line (a few couples about like us but mostly a younger, backpacker crowd) and climbed aboard. We were looking for our berths and kept walking back further and further and further. Then we ran out of room and ... read more

A Few Days in the Highlands 6 April 09 - DA LAT We decided to fly to Da Lat, instead of an 8 hour bus ride. The flight from Saigon to Da Lat was very easy and again we were surprised at how empty the airport was; both the international side when we arrived and the domestic when we left. It took us all of about 20 minutes to get checked in, zip through security and get to our gate. They had a nice café at the gate area so we staked out a table and had some iced coffee and a hearty meal. For once the airport food was not a total rip-off. We spent less than $10 USD for plenty of food and drink. It has been difficult to spend more than $10 ... read more

Hello Vietnam Well, after years of talking about it, we finally made to Vietnam. Landing in Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, around 7pm; we breezed through customs and right into a row of customer service counters. We walked up to the very first one and within 5 minutes we had exchanged money, purchased a SIM card for our cell-phone and arranged taxi service to our hotel. Done! Everyone talks about the crazy amount of motorbikes on the roads in Saigon and on the drive to our hotel that’s exactly what we saw. Our hotel, Blue River 2, was located in District I but not in the part with lots of hotels and restaurants. The streets outside consisted mostly of motorbike repair shops and electrical retail. But it was just $20 a night, A/C, ... read more

The Ins and Outs of Koh Lanta Getting to the small island of Koh Lanta is not easy, but not too difficult either; just more steps involved. We flew from Bangkok to Krabi the day prior, due to their not being a flight early enough for us to catch the ferry. So, one night in Krabi and first thing the next morning we were on the ferry for our 2 hour trip to Koh Lanta. The ferry was not much of a ferry, but more like a long basic boat with plastic seats loosely bolted to the floor and a roof over-head. The ferry cost about 350 baht each; you can also take a van service if you don’t mind the trip taking a bit longer. If we had looked into this closer, we could have ... read more
