We finally made it to Mexico. Mark was really scared at the airport (what else is new). Completely lost and confused like always. Good thing Margie was there to save the day. She got us through Immigration, Customs, and baggage claim without dropping a sweat. Then Mark couldn't figure out the cash machine at the airport, so once again Margie had to step in to save the day. After checking into our hostel we headed for the beach where we spent all day, after that we headed for some Cerveza (the only Spanish word mark learned the whole time we were there). ... read more

Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The penultimate stop on my journey around Mexico, this little gem of an island didn't let me down. We arrived amid a tropical downpour (hence refering to Travis), the streets were deeply awash but our moods were light, the hostel we had been recommended was supposed to be a really sociable one...and it was! We dumped backpacks and headed straight for the bar, the frozen cocktails were all two for one so carnage ensued!! We chatted to loads of people and had a merry time, I even saw the two Dulwich girls I'd met on my first stop in Oaxaca, then the Danish girl that was at the previous stop and this one, again one of many many random meetings with random people. The past couple of nights have been a bit ... read more

The Mayan Land Having travelled over half the country in one Giant leap (26 hour bus ride) from Mexico City. I find myself in the land of the Mayan. Even stepping off the bus in Cancun (hell hole) you can feel the underlying energy. This is one of the most highly saturated historic regions in the World, over 400 temples are spread between here and the Guatemala border, all have the distinct pyramid shape. All temples are immediately taken from the Design of Teotihuacán (Mexico city) To visit all of them is said to take over a year. Most are placed deep within intense jungle and take days of trekking to reach. Having spent already a large part of this trip visiting and photographing the most prominent of all the historical sites, you conclude that ... read more

Hey up once again! I'm not gonna be writing much this time as I've written plenty over the last few blogs. Basically we headed from Tulum to Valladolid which is a small town in the central Yucatan so I was striking distance from my main Mexico "must see" of Chichen Itza and also the local Ek Balam Maya Ruins. We stayed at a great hotel on the zocalo called Hotel Maria De Luz which had its own swimming pool and a great little restaurant that served regional and generic Mexican dishes at real decent prices - beats Tulum's inflated beach prices hand down for quality & quantity. Valladolid is pretty scruffy and still very Mexican and as such affords plenty of on street vendors plying there wares and has many places to eat at very economical ... read more

Ok, I know I said in my last blog that I wasn't going to write much here.... Well looks like I've gone on a bit again... Sorry.... Please excuse my rantings..... I'm not going to give a blow by blow account of all the fabulous ruins at Chichen Itza, instead I've tried to give an insight into the Maya and how they saw the world and what they believed in. Chichen Itza is a truly impressive site. When planning our trip to Mexico it was always at the top of my list of places to see. So with real anticipation, I left our hotel early and was on-site by about 9.45am, avoiding all the tourist hoardes yet again and started running around like a loon snapping away at all those lovely ruins.... For those of ... read more

This trip was to be the best yet. We were hoping to keep it around 7 or 8 days. First we looked at the Oaxaca Coast on the Pacific side. Then I realized the climb over the mountains was a seven hour trip of hair pin curves with many bloggers warning that you must take motion sickness medicine. Then several of my Mexican friends strongly discouraged the trip indicating that it was not entirely safe right now. Apparently President Calderon has sent the military to the region in hopes of stopping the drug traffic. So, we turned our attention to the Gulf Coast. The State of Vera Cruz was, of course, the logical ... read more

Scroll down for photos or click on one of them and click slideshow. That helps. I love this website to keep me up to date with y'all. If anyone makes a comment (funny or thoughtful) I think you can read them too at the bottom of each blog. I've had a couple. If anyone perfers to not get the blog, please let me know and I'll take you off distribution. Not a problem. I don't want to interfere with anyone's work policies or that the photos take up too much space. You can always check in ... read more

We have been over a week in Mexico already and the end of our trip is near! We first spent a few days in Palenque as Em couldn´t cross through Belize without a Visa. Not always good to have an Austrian passport! Anyway, we visited the ruins in Palenque but we decided not to bore you with more pics of Maya ruins. However, we saw this fantastic green snake when we were going from ruin to ruin. FRom Palenque we went straight to Tulum on the sea and we have been here since. It is very nice and laid back - we stay in a small hut on the beach and there is little infrastructure. This means that we do a lot of BBQ´s and shopping in the town. As it is low season the ... read more
