Flight with Thai air was not the best start - despite booking tickets together and rocking up in Heathrow 3 hours prior departure, we were told that we were not able to sit next to each other :). Never happened before and quite a basic thing but at least we arrived on time in Bangkok. Bangkok is interesting (meant in the English way) and there is a really strong smell, which hits you every time you leave the building. We did the tourist thing, visited a couple of wats and Koa san road and bought souvenirs. The highlight was meeting N (Em's friend from Austria) and trying all the different type of transports - boat, taxi, tuktuk, metro and sky train. Bad experience with the tuktuk that drove us into an alley and rubbish tip... Now, ... read more

Most business trips are not worth blogging about but Em thought New York City must be.... Although the jetlag and all day meetings in a windowless room are really tiring, I totally love it. The little non working time I have, I spend just walking around and getting lost. I am staying in Midtown and very surprised that most attractions are in walking distance. However, considering that I am now very exhausted after walking from midtown all the way to Brooklyn and back, maybe I should have taken a cab or the subway. Anyway, I did take a cab yesterday and it’s not easy to flag one down, it took a good 20 minutes until somebody stopped... Friday evening I managed to pop into MoMa after work and it was worth it especially as it is ... read more

On Thursday we arrived in Luxor and we are stayed at a great hotel - this really has the standard of a 5 star and a lovely pool and we were very happy. Luxor is a nice town with 2 big temples in the centre and a lot of tourists. It is amazing to see all these people visiting the sights and all of them including us hot and sweaty but it is worth it. The afternoon we spent in the swimming pool and in the evening we went into town and had a nice dinner. At night, the egyptians are actuallly nice and there are more women and children around and even the guys are not as annoying as usual. The hassle can be really annoying from time to time and the majority do not ... read more

We set out at 5 am to get to Heathrow for our flight to Cairo Egypt, so far so good. Em's bag did not arrive and she was unable to enjoy the swimming pool in the hotel as her bikini was in the bag with all other clothes and the camera. On the next day, Em kitted out in Frankie's clothes; we started with the famous Step pyramid and then proceeded to the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. All really impressive and the pyramids are a lot higher than we thought. All sites are full of Egyptians, who hassle the tourists and this is tiring and nearly put us off the camel ride. However, our guide said that he can arrange a 'safe' camel ride and Em quickly mounted one whilst Frankie was rather reluctant. ... read more

We finally managed to take a trip that did not involve good old Italy or Austria. As much as we love going home, it was exciting to go to a new place for a change. We decided to visit friends in Galway and explore the Irish coast over Easter. Galway airport is tiny and there are no queues and everybody is easygoing. As we arrived late, we just stayed at home and had a great time with our friends. On Saturday, we went for a horse back ride but frankly speaking it was more a walk - no trotting or cantering and Frankie was not allowed to ride without somebody guiding his horse. What a difference to our last ride in Mexico, where we just got a horse allocated and off we went at high speed. ... read more

Em and Frankie went to Austria to have some fun and of course watch the EURO 2008! As Austria crashed out so early, Em was free to support any team and Frankie was still hoping for Italia. It was the first time for us to use the new Terminal 5 and the decision was made not to check anything in and travel light. Departing from T5 involves a lot of travelling up and down and many flash shops but everything went well. We had tickets to see the quarterfinal Croatia against Turkey and we decided to visit Schoenbrunn before the match. The sight was full of football tourists and it was nice to see everybody enjoying the beauty of this magnificent building. The tube and stadium was full of Croatians supporting their team and it seemed ... read more

Nearly 12 months gone and not a single trip for Em and Frankie, who are spending all their time working and staying in London again. Really missing seeing new places and was really pleased that I was sent to Poland on a short business trip. It's a bit sad getting exciting about a business trip, but I have never been to Poland and here we go. Em on her own arrived without local currency and only one cash card at the airport and then couldn’t get any cash. The taxi was pre-booked but not pre-paid and after a bit of haggling, the driver agreed to take me for 10 EUR. My fears that the office and hotel would be on the outskirts of Warsaw did not come true and I stayed in the centre in a ... read more

From Tulum we took a bus to Cancun and yes the hotel zone looks as built up as we imagined! As Cancun does not really interest us we headed straight to the ferry to get to Isla Mujeres. Although Isla Mujeres is very close to Cancun and rather developed, it is still really nice and small. There are no high rise hotels and the beaches are all still public. There are quite a lot of umbrealls and sun chairs to rent and the beaches are not as empty as some otheres, but still far from Rimini or the Costa Brava. There is a nice stretch without any chairs and some palms to give shade. During the day, the big boats full of day trippers from Cancun arrive for a bit of shopping and snorkelling and ... read more

We have been over a week in Mexico already and the end of our trip is near! We first spent a few days in Palenque as Em couldn´t cross through Belize without a Visa. Not always good to have an Austrian passport! Anyway, we visited the ruins in Palenque but we decided not to bore you with more pics of Maya ruins. However, we saw this fantastic green snake when we were going from ruin to ruin. FRom Palenque we went straight to Tulum on the sea and we have been here since. It is very nice and laid back - we stay in a small hut on the beach and there is little infrastructure. This means that we do a lot of BBQ´s and shopping in the town. As it is low season the ... read more

THis week has gone so quickly and we are actually already in Mexico (just arrived yesterday night!). Our English teaching job was based in a wonderful nation park with 3 Maya sites: Yaxha, Nakum and Naranja. We were based in Yax-ha to teach a bunch of care takers English. The guys were really lovely and highly motivated but for some of themit was very difficult to grasp the basic of a new language. We even had a student who didn´t know how to read and write and the students didn´t have a book or copies to follow....Hence, we did a lot of one-to one follow ups during the day surrounded by the ruins. It was so much fun to practice and get to know our students that we happily worke all day long. They are ... read more
