After spending a beautiful day at the beach, it finally happened ~ after more than 12 years of international travel and 20 countries ~ a theft occurred. Carlos and I enjoyed a day trip from his home town to Acapulco, but the day did not end as we had hoped. We enjoyed the entire day at the beach and it wasn't until around 5:00 p.m. that we turned our back from our cabana for minutes. In an instance both of our bags, containing everything we had come to the beach with, including many other important items for an international trip with were taken. I am not going to bore you with the items though. We suspect it was our waiter because he was the only one that had access. We quickly scavenged the beach, but ... read more

Had finished my blog sent today during my lunch break today and forgot about news from friends! Kim and Jay set cruise last weekend for Montego Bay, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel! Tracee and her friends set off on the same cruise I think. Hopefully they will recognize each other (if they run into each other) from our bus trip to Plantersville last fall. Patricia and Harry are playing in Arizona to return next week. Nancy, who stays packed for trips, is off next week with Elaine to Puerto Rico. I'd join them if I weren't trying to get to Texas about that time. Kim and Tommy will be back from Nashville soon. Sorry you have to go back to work, guys. Melissa has a wonderful new job and EOM (call her not me!). Maurine, ... read more

So besides visiting with my family in Mexico, I did do a few other things... Ivonne, a girl who works for my host dad took me downtown to the "Zocalo" of Puebla one day to walk around, visit a museum and have some lunch while everyone in the family was either at work or school. She was a sweetheart and I got to practice quite a bit of Spanish with her. The week before I left was filled with so much running around that I was exhausted that night and didn't go out. But Memo's (my family's eldest son) girlfriend Ileana and her friend Claudia took me for sushi (there are a lot more japonese restaurants in Puebla than I remember when I was there a few years ago), to the church of the mummy, ... read more

The rain poured, so we went to do something I actually found quite interesting. ‘Cenote’ cave exploring, this is a natural underground sink hole found in a nearby place called Dzitnup. This is where the Mayans used to get their fresh water. These Cenotes’ have been created over MILLIONS of years by drops of rainwater that slowly dripped through the Yucatan’s granite earth creating these beautiful hanging stalactites. I slithered into the clear warm water and swam alongside hundreds of small black fish, I was on guard in case the big black pond monster lurking in the deeper abyss parts decided to show itself, my fear of water ever present, saying this it felt very satisfying being in there. The sun burst through the caves upper hole for about six minutes, but the light soon passed ... read more

As I mentioned in a previous Blog, I've been doing my research and for those of you interested in my findings thus far, or if you are considering a trip to the Central Highlands of Ecuador, read on... First off, based on my research on the net in conjunction with my new Lonley Planet guide book, the best place to start off with is Secret Garden Hostel in the Old City. I'll be writing more about it once we get there but it's an award winning little spot with a rooftop terrace and plenty of character. By the way, a really useful site for checking out hostels is www.hostelz.com They have great pictures and info about a plethora of places all over the world. I did a lot of research using them! Another place I recommend ... read more

Hi everyone - I suppose you may well be getting a bit bored of all this travel spam coming your way - I hope not but I can fully understand if you are... ah well let me add some more fuel to that fire.... Claire & I are still in Mexico, seeing out our last days in a small town called Valladolid which is just a stones throw away from Chichen Itza (the most popular of all the maya ruins) with our visa´s running out on 11th June. As usual I just want to say how the hell are you? Hope everyone is in fine spirits leading into the UK summer. I´ve heard from people online it´s been pretty hot over there in Blighty? - or is that just BS? Anyways, weather aside lets get down ... read more

Hello all ! Just a weekly update. No pics developed yet. Soon I promise. Have had some very busy times at work getting things together for audit this week. Audit progressing nicely too. Last week I went to Progreso again with my friend. I introduced him to my friends there, relaxed on beach, ate and drank for hours. Last Saturday evening I went with some co-workers to see the presentation of 'Descubriends Irlanda', an Irish dance performance (in Mexico!) in which another co-worker and her sister were part of. The theater at the Instittute of Yucatan was beautiful and old! 6 chairs to a booth, 3 in each of 2 rows. We were 4 stories up and you had to lean over the railing and look almost straight down to see the stage. I had charge ... read more

As I told you in the previous entry, we visit the market every day. I have been to many markets in different countries, but they are still fascinating to me. Every city, town, pueblo, etc. has a market and you can buy anything you want. Theses markets are more like mini malls, but obviously all outdoors and made of large sheets of plastic. We just picked up a small screwdriver the other day right after and right next to the fruit we bought. The San Francisco Market is where we go here in Chilpancingo. The attached photos are from the mercado. The prices are incredibly cheap. We can spend $50-$60 for vegetables and here the same will cost you maybe $10. The fresh fruits and vegetables in Mexico are so different in color than those ... read more

Playa Del Carmen & Cozumel, Mexico. Another day long journey on Monday, we left Caye Caulker (queue weeping incoherently) on the 8:30am speed boat to to Belize City on the coastline, caught a nice aircon bus from there to the Mexican-Belize border town called Chetumal (4hrs), crossed the border to Playa Del Carmen on the Mexican coast (4 hrs), then a taxi to the hotel which made it around 8pm. The hotel was kinda funky, the entrance was built into a tree, the whole place was quite jungle-esque. Playa Del Carmen is....well....America really! It is a Mexican town on steroids due to the American cruise ships docking here, dumping off waddling, fat Americans weighed down with all their dollars. All the shops are super swanky: diamonds, designer and the lazy Americans just pay USD wherever ... read more

I must say the Yucatan region has more ancient ruins than the UK has branches of Tescos. It’s been parched during the last 83 days that we have been in Mexico, suddenly it rained hard. When the rain cleared and the sun scorched its way through the clouds like a tongue through candy floss all the pesky microscopic bugs came out and smothered my sodden skin, causing inescapable irritable itchy, scratchy. I visited a real Mayan Shaman. He did not live within a hidden mountain/jungle retreat, but conveniently his healing office was right next door to our hotel called Copal Mayan spa, this man was the only currency worth every damn penny of his $90usd bill. Daniel Poole Peach looked very much like a solid, kind, Mayan Burt Reynolds. He asked me how I was. I ... read more
