I must say the Yucatan region has more ancient ruins than the UK has branches of Tescos. It’s been parched during the last 83 days that we have been in Mexico, suddenly it rained hard. When the rain cleared and the sun scorched its way through the clouds like a tongue through candy floss all the pesky microscopic bugs came out and smothered my sodden skin, causing inescapable irritable itchy, scratchy. I visited a real Mayan Shaman. He did not live within a hidden mountain/jungle retreat, but conveniently his healing office was right next door to our hotel called Copal Mayan spa, this man was the only currency worth every damn penny of his $90usd bill. Daniel Poole Peach looked very much like a solid, kind, Mayan Burt Reynolds. He asked me how I was. I ... read more

After cruising inside a mobile fridge for 14 hours (we suggest anyone travelling in overnight buses to rug up!!) We arrived in Puerto Escondido very tired and disorientated. Upon our arrival we met Horehare(not sure of the spelling). He was dropping a friend off at the station and he asked us if we needed any accommodation. After sussing him out for a few minutes we decided to go with him. This decision turned out to be very good one. We rented a villa off him at a ridiculously cheap price and he was such a friendly and helpful guy. Our stay in Puerto Escondido was packed with great experiences. Good food, good people and great waves. This place does turn into pipleine on sand. The ding repair shop was constantly busy. Luckily they didn't get ... read more

Hi everyone, Feeling guilty again about not updating my blog, so here's a very quick rundown of where I've been and what I've been doing, when I get photos developed will go over it all again in more detail! From Easter Island I flew to Mexico City and ended up spending 10 days there, it's a great city with so much to do and see, you could easily spend a few weeks there. Went from there to Oaxaca for a few days, then to Pacific coast for a couple of nights and to San Cristobal in Chiapas. Both Oaxaca and San Cristobal very interesting for what is going on there politically, but will save that for the long version! Then to ruins of Palenque - very beautiful, set in thick forest - and to Merida, nice ... read more

I’ve been really interested in seeing the ruins at Palenque for a long time now, abandoned by the Maya about 800AD and shrouded in deep jungle for centuries before being re-discovered at the beginning of the 1900’s. I think this is basically because of books like The Mayan Prophecies & Graham Hancock’s book ‘Fingerprints Of The Gods’ which give you the impression that these ancient folk had a lot more knowledge than we give them credit for. The most famous discovery here was in the 1940’s when King Pacal’s tomb was uncovered - which had an exquisitely carved sarcophagus lid (which was used as the basic premise for interpretation in The Mayan Prophecies) and the famous jade mask of King Pacal (innumerable number of copies will be held up in front of you to purchase everywhere ... read more

Well, my trip officially started as of May 30th! I arrived in Mexico to visit my past host family, Oli, Mario, Ricky and Memo. I´ve done a little sightseeing in Puebla, but I´ve mostly just caught up with the family and rested (the week before I left felt like a whirlwind). Not much else to say for now. I´ll be adding photos later. It´s just great to be spending time with everyone here and they all send their love to the people they´ve met in NA. ¡Hasta pronto!... read more

Our second attempt out of Los Angeles was successful as we finally boarded our plane enroute to Mexico City. We arrived in Mexico City and once again cruised through immigration and managed to get ourselves a cab to our hostel with our very poco spanish. This cab ride was a very fast introduction to how loco Mex City really is. The markets were on the street our hostel was on so the cab driver couldn not drive us in. He just dropped off and pointed, so we presumed we had to walk in that direction. Luckily we didn't have far to go. With 4 surfboards and 4 backpacks you don't want to walk far! We settled into our hostel which was right in the centre(thank goodness for ear plugs)These Mexicans can really make a noise. and ... read more

Two weeks ago I had the coolest family reunion ever. First, my Dad came down to Mexico to visit me. We spent Thursday night in Cuernavaca and he got to meet my host mom, Celia, and her sister Lety. These are two of the most amazing women I have ever met. They are both divorced, with children who are grown and out of the house, and live together in a beautiful house in Cuernavaca. They rent the extra rooms out students, both Mexican and foreign, and have anywhere from four to eight students at a time. They are both beautiful women, inside and out. They are so happy, so full of life and adventure. I aspire to be like them when I'm their age. I think they made quite an impression on my Dad too. ... read more

UntitledHello all, seeing as it is the end of my first leg of my round the world adventure, having made it to Mexico, ticking off Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatamala and Belize in the past month, and I have yet to write anything to anyone I have decided to make the most of cheap internet and see how things are back in the real world. This morning saw the last of my trip depart, which was a little weird with everyone so excited to go home, and me knowing that I have six months to go. So it is good and bad, said goodbye to plenty of friends but am looking forward to once again having the freedom to do what I want when I want, even if that is not very much! Have been looking ... read more
