I had a little drama a couple of weeks ago. My backup disk where I saved photos and other useful information concerning my travels during last 15+ years suddenly died. After a lot of checking it looked perfectly empty, hundreds of Giga information disappeared. It made me think again about my dilemma - travel and read or travel and write... Still not sure what I'd like to do and a lit bit bored by the cold weather and winter in general, decided to put my a confused thoughts to this blog. Hopefully, they will stay here. Auf dem Weg aus Muskat heraus durchfahren wir schon die ersten Ausläufer des Hajar-Gebirges und fahren auf einer sechsspurig ausgebauten Schnellstraße durch eine Mondlandschaft mit gelegentlichen Häuseransammlungen, die das Wort „Ort“ nicht verdienen. Immer wieder stehen Ziegenherden oder Esel am Straßenrand und immer weniger Autos sind außer uns unterwegs. Gelegentlich überholen wir einen gedankenverloren mit dem Fahrrad über die Schnellstraße tingelnden jungen Mann mit Kopfhörern in den Ohren. Braun ist die vorherrschende Farbe während wir durch, scheinbar wahllos von Riesen durch die Gegend geworfene Steinbrocken, fahren-immer gen Süden und bald sind wir zurück am Meer und die Schnellstraße wird zur Küstenautobahn. Wie sagt man so schön: Die schönste Aussicht wartet immer hinter dem steinigsten Aufstieg. Und so können wir nach einem wirklich mehr als holprigen Start in den Urlaub eigentlich nur auf eine absolute Traumreise hoffen. Aber kurz zusammengefasst von vorne: Nachdem Dennis und ich noch bis zum Abend vor der Abreise mit Magen Darm komplett flach lagen und die letzten Reisevorbereitungen um 6 Uhr morgens vor der Abreise erledigt wurden, saßen wir Irgendwann gegen 11 Uhr entspannt im Flugzeug und dachten uns, dass jetzt ja kaum noch was schief gehen könnte. Allerdings standen wir dann über eine Stunde auf dem Rollfeld und so langsam dämmerte uns, dass unsere Transferzeit in Abu Dhabi gerade auf knackige 40 Minuten heruntergeschrumpft war, als wir dann mit mehr als einer Stunde Verspätung endlich in Frankfurt abhoben. We take two days to sail to Abu Dhabi. We use the gym and I do chairasize to attempt to keep off the pounds from the lovely food we gorge on..The entertainment is very good. As we sail into Abu Dhabi we get the news that the rate of Covid infection in the ship is higher than the medical crew are happy with. So we are all “asked” to wear masks in public areas, wash hands etc and the crew will deep clean the vessel. Good luck with that, it is huge and with a myriad of surfaces. As long as we don’t become a plague ship refused entry to port after port we’ll manage. Anyway, next stop Abu Dhabi. It is the capital and second largest city in the United Arab Emirates. I had a 24 hour (once my flight was delayed) stay in Istanbul so I decided to take advantage of the time and go see the sites! Turkish Airlines offers a free tour of the city for any passengers with a long layover. I generally am not one for group tours, but I thought I would at least join for the bus right into town. I ended up staying with the group for the first half of the day where I met some interesting travelers from around the world. I learned that Istanbul is the largest city of Europe with 15 million people beating out Moscow at 12 million people.
