Winter in Europe is something I have never really experienced. I am not big on the European Christmas markets throughout northern Europe. But I am not crazy about cold, wet, rainy, snowy, icy weather. So, even though I start and end this trip in Munich, I am already thinking of warmer climes. This does present a problem with what to pack, whether colder and warmer weather. But I can always ditch the cold weather clothes, meaning donating to either the homeless or to a charity. Or, as my brother often did in our youth, just bring a pair of scissors, and make some instant Bermuda shorts. Given a choice, I would always choose Greece. After all, I have my "adopted" Greek brothers there, Stavros, Giorgos, and Vasilis. And there are many parts of Greece I have ... read more

The title sounds more dramatic than reality. But hey, there is nothing wrong with a catchy title, and a little dramatic license. That's what story telling is all about. And it isn't a lie. I am alone. After dropping my mum off at Riyadh airport, it was time to do some travelling solo. Because deep down inside I have missed being on my own, travelling around without anybody by my side. There is a part of me that likes the solitude. It has been three years since it was just me, myself and I on the road, and that's a long time for somebody like me. In all honesty, I was slightly anxious about being on my own again, I wasn't sure how it would be, couldn't remember how it felt. But it was a healthy ... read more

With the travel day, 3 hour time change and late-night bedtime, it seemed like a short night. I snuck out to breakfast, as Ken was still blissfully dreaming The breakfast area overlooked the pool with a very large selection of arabic (hummus, labneh, grilled vegis, freshly grilled flatbreads with cheese and herbs, etc) and western (eggs, bacon, etc). Ken wandered down and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, slowly getting into the day. Our plan today was to taxi to the Citadel, and then wander to the Roman Theater and on to the souq (marketplace). Eventually we got going, and soon we were entering the Citadel with our Jordan Pass. Note to anyone visiting, get the Jordan Pass before arriving...it includes the visa and access to most of the major historical sites in Jordan. Very worthwhile! The ... read more

One of the benefits of living in Ireland is the close proximity to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. And, for this trip we decided to take advantage of that and explore Jordan. While I have been to the region many times for work and actually living in Saudi Arabia for 2 years, Ken has had limited exposure. As Jordan is considered one of the safest, and has some amazing sites this was the perfect way to introduce him to the wonderful hospitality, great food and see some cool things in the process. Ken was thrilled that I actually booked flights that did not leave at 6am, which always means we have to be out the door at 345a. A reasonable 1140a flight meant normal sleeping and some time to enjoy coffee before starting the journey. ... read more

Well, for one thing, I get a free layover of about 18 hours, between my connection from Munich to my flight home from Istanbul to SFO. So, why not take advantage of this layover, spend the night in a decent hotel, instead of spending the night in the airline business class lounge? I was just here in May, 2019, just before the pandemic hit in early 2020. I spent about a week here, with a local guide. He was a friend of a friend, of Mr. Mike. And he was excellent. I was able to hit all of the highpoints of Istanbul, as well as take the harbor cruise throughout the Bosporus. But the real reason for returning is simply for the Turkish Delight. I brought back a kilo last time, thinking it was too much. ... read more

Tuesday 9 May 23 - Dubai Transfer from Venice City to Venice airport went smoothly. Picked up right on time and shared the water taxi with three other couples. bit crowded but it worked. Biggest surprise was at the airport - but keeping in mind it is about 9 years since we last flew out of Venice. Previously when we have flown out of Venice, there was an open air pier area and about 500 metres of walking on uncovered pathway to the Terminal. Now there is significant infrastructure with covered piers and an elevated, covered walkway all the way to the Terminal building. Very well done ! The Terminal area has also ben upgraded. Late afternoon flight from Venice to Dubai - departed Venice 3:35pm - arrived Dubai 11:25pm local time. Smooth flight. Loooong ... read more

Middle East » Saudi Arabia » Najran November 10th 2022

My last blog focused mainly on the issues of travelling around Saudi Arabia, when you don't have your own transport, with a few first impressions thrown in for good measure. What it didn't tell about was the people, which is by all accounts probably the most interesting and important part of travelling. The people! Sights can be impressive and awe-inspiring, but it's mostly the little encounters along the way that stay in ones mind. The interactions, both good and bad. I can't say we had any bad experiences here in Saudi Arabia. The people have been incredibly hospitable and friendly, both the locals, as well as all the migrant workers. To be honest, I hadn't expected anything else. I sort of took for granted that we would be treated the way we were treated. Why? Because ... read more

Our next stop on our itinerary was the coastal town of Bodrum. Yes, this is a place we could get to by water, but when we looked at places nearby to visit for a few days from Marmaris, we decided we’d tour this area now due to ease of getting there. As always, the 4 ½ hour bus trip provided us another lovely view of the landscape in this area of the country. We definitely wish that our bus travel in the US would be as comfortable as it is here with its less crowded seating and even a service of beverages and a snack on the way. The price for bus travel here makes it a very reasonable way to get around and you can easily book the tickets on line. We wound up finding ... read more

As mentioned in the last blog we decided to take a few days to do some land travel in Turkey. The night before we were scheduled to leave Bob decided to pour some water in the bilge to clean it out. This should have been just a quick thing to do, but the bilge alarm went off and stayed on! Yikes, something else. Bob was now having to figure out the problem and in the end he decided to put in a whole new unit. Always good to have spares onboard for situations like this as it was 7:30pm so no shops would be open and we have to leave at 8:30 AM the next morning to catch the bus. We actually have 2 brand new units as spares, 1 exactly the same and the other ... read more

No, this blog won't be about a Korean boy-band called K.S.A. I don't in fact know, if there is a Korean boy-band named like that. It wouldn't surprise me. The K.S.A. I am referring to is the abbreviation for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A long time dream. One that seemed unattainable until three years ago, when suddenly this closed to tourist country went from unable to get a visa, to press a button on the internet and get an e-visa in ten seconds! Covid put a spanners in my plan to go there earlier, but here I am at last. Along with me on the first part of my trip is my mum. I would have liked to have Jenni with me, but she couldn't come. Not that my mum is not good enough, we ... read more
