Google maps has been invaluable at helping us find our way between destinations and also providing some ‘enrichment’ in the routes chosen. Today's adventure started off well with another delicious breakfast in the courtyard, but things went somewhat downhill from there. First descent was when child #1 noticed in an absolute panic that she had left her favourite toy in the bed at the hotel, precisely 3 seconds after we had entered the freeway system. Tried to navigate our way out of it, only to head 20 mins in the exact wrong direction with no exit in sight. Finally made it back to the hotel to collect the attempted escapee. Exactly one hour behind schedule and we headed to Pamukkale for some restorative soaking. It was a long trip, mostly on freeway (where we experienced an ... read more

Who said hot?! The ancient Romans that’s who!! Yeah, so they decided to build this city in a basic oven. Well, at least if you’re 10 or 13, it basically feels like you’re dying because it’s SO hot that even though you come from Sydney, one crappy summer, and you’ve forgotten how to do heat. And basically, you’re about to die. Seriously. Lucky your mother has predicted what an absolute torture chamber this has inflicted on your life and scheduled a morning by the pool, splashing and relaxing. That, and the guide wasn’t available until 3.00 after all the cruise ship passengers had left. But let’s go with caring and accommodating. The day kicked off the most spectacular Turkish breakfast at the hotel which then required some slothing by the pool, and splashing. And agonising over ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Aqaba June 30th 2022

Waking up around 4 am, we indeed did have an early morning in order to get to the Tel Aviv airport at 5. There was a shocking number of people in the airport, and we had to wait in three different lines. We took a 50-minute flight to Amman, Jordan where we had a five-hour layover and then a half hour delay before our flight to Aqaba, Jordan. Once there, we took a shuttle to our hotel where we took showers and ate at the buffet. I was on my own for most of the following day. My family was going snorkeling and diving, and these days, those sorts of activities are simply not for me. I passed time by working on college stuff since I am now 17 and a rising senior in high school. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Gallipoli June 29th 2022

Having been to Gallipoli twice before, both times just before Anzac Day to visit the historical sites and then for the Dawn service, I wasn’t sure whether a third visit would be a bit same same. But visiting in summer, when it’s hot, and away from Anzac Day, when it’s far less crowded and more peaceful, brings a different perspective. Bringing kids (I’m hot, how much longer, can I have icecream) also changes things slightly. We arrived in Eceabat after an early start and long drive from Istanbul. A few refueling stops along the way and we were pleased to see that conditions were overcast with a very strong breeze whipping up the Dardanelles keeping the temperature reasonable. A quick lunch stop before we collected all the other Aussies and, inexplicably, an Italian and headed for ... read more

This summer my dad, stepmom, sister and I went to Israel and Jordan. We were supposed to take this trip in the summer of 2020, but something else got in the way... We started in Tel Aviv, where upon arrival we settled into the hotel before my dad, sister and I walked to the Carmel Market. Along the way sat a beautiful beach where the sea breeze made the hot sun a little bit more tolerable. At the market we journeyed through spice, fruit, and sweets stalls, the latter of which got my business for my love of anything rugelach and baklava; the man at the stand we went to even gave us two free baklavas. We walked back to the hotel where I then spoke on the phone to my significant other that I would ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul June 27th 2022

An action-packed few days in Istanbul. Given that we had been here before (twice for me) and I thought the girls might tire of mosques and palaces, I looked into a few unique experiences to kick off the holiday. Yesterday morning started with an impressive breakfast overlooking the port (cause you can never really get away from the wonder of freight) before a stroll through Sultanahmet and a Turkish coffee to shake off the call to prayer early morning wake up. Just next to Topkapi palace, we visited an art shop where the owner (who had a degree in Fine Arts) showed us the art of paper marbling or Ebru. She explained to us the materials and techniques involved - some stuff to make the water more jelly-like and ox bile to make the pigments more ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul » Sultanahmet June 25th 2022

Travelling in the post pandemic world is full of stress and uncertainty- cancellations, staff shortages, queues. It is, then, a miracle to behold that two travelling parties, their origins on two separate continents can agree to meet on a third continent and arrive within 30 people in the passport queue. Particularly when one of those parties can answer with genuine ignorance when he’s asked upon boarding his flight from Tanzania what his onward travelling arrangements from Turkey are. So, we have arrived in Istanbul, pleasantly stress-free compared to the last trip, but not lacking in vomit. After settling in to our apartment and admiring the view, we had a wander around Sultanahmet, refuelled the tanks, rekindled our love for Efes and enjoyed some warmth. The work continues to get things “ship-shape” on Tsamaya. We had been noticing that the water pump was not working correctly as it seemed to be leaking “air” so the pump would turn on even when we weren’t turning on the water. The water pump is in a very awkward location to get to easily so even though Bob could do it, we are getting smarter in our old age and picking and choosing the jobs that we farm out to others. This fell into that category for sure. We made contact with Erika again to find out who to work with – she put us in touch with a company, Merlin, and they came out quickly to look at the problem. They diagnosed a problem with the accumulator, had another one in stock and came ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra June 17th 2022

Here we are, the last blog of our little two weeks gorgeous Middle East trip. This is my third visit to Petra, but only the first one for Tanya. In the span of 20 hours in Petra, we actually visited 3 times the site! The drive from Wadi Rum to Petra is a pretty cool one. Some roads are super narrow and in the "hills"...so if you keep a good driving speed...just stay pretty aware of your surroundings. There are for me two options (actually three) to stay in Petra. We could have stay at the small Marriott....I hold top level with them, but the rate was a little steep for June. They also have two Movenpick hotels. I have stay in both on my last two stay. The Movenpick Petra has the perfect location, at ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum June 16th 2022

Here we are, soon the last blog of a very special June trip. Today is a little special as we are celebrating our second wedding anniversary. The big day was on the beach in Seychelles. Next year, we took the dress to the Sossusvlei in Namibia...and we already have colder and greener plans for 2023 and 2024! Wadi Rum is one of those very special places in the world. I've done it in December...so this time, it's a little warmer. Interesting enough, we are nowhere close to the heat of Luxor. Would I call 33 degrees a very comfortable temperature for mid day...well, yes it is! We drove all the way early morning from the Dead Sea via Aqaba. The big advantage of a self drive in Jordan is the size of the country. 4 hours ... read more
