Middle East » Saudi Arabia » Najran November 10th 2022

My last blog focused mainly on the issues of travelling around Saudi Arabia, when you don't have your own transport, with a few first impressions thrown in for good measure. What it didn't tell about was the people, which is by all accounts probably the most interesting and important part of travelling. The people! Sights can be impressive and awe-inspiring, but it's mostly the little encounters along the way that stay in ones mind. The interactions, both good and bad. I can't say we had any bad experiences here in Saudi Arabia. The people have been incredibly hospitable and friendly, both the locals, as well as all the migrant workers. To be honest, I hadn't expected anything else. I sort of took for granted that we would be treated the way we were treated. Why? Because ... read more

Our next stop on our itinerary was the coastal town of Bodrum. Yes, this is a place we could get to by water, but when we looked at places nearby to visit for a few days from Marmaris, we decided we’d tour this area now due to ease of getting there. As always, the 4 ½ hour bus trip provided us another lovely view of the landscape in this area of the country. We definitely wish that our bus travel in the US would be as comfortable as it is here with its less crowded seating and even a service of beverages and a snack on the way. The price for bus travel here makes it a very reasonable way to get around and you can easily book the tickets on line. We wound up finding ... read more

As mentioned in the last blog we decided to take a few days to do some land travel in Turkey. The night before we were scheduled to leave Bob decided to pour some water in the bilge to clean it out. This should have been just a quick thing to do, but the bilge alarm went off and stayed on! Yikes, something else. Bob was now having to figure out the problem and in the end he decided to put in a whole new unit. Always good to have spares onboard for situations like this as it was 7:30pm so no shops would be open and we have to leave at 8:30 AM the next morning to catch the bus. We actually have 2 brand new units as spares, 1 exactly the same and the other ... read more

No, this blog won't be about a Korean boy-band called K.S.A. I don't in fact know, if there is a Korean boy-band named like that. It wouldn't surprise me. The K.S.A. I am referring to is the abbreviation for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A long time dream. One that seemed unattainable until three years ago, when suddenly this closed to tourist country went from unable to get a visa, to press a button on the internet and get an e-visa in ten seconds! Covid put a spanners in my plan to go there earlier, but here I am at last. Along with me on the first part of my trip is my mum. I would have liked to have Jenni with me, but she couldn't come. Not that my mum is not good enough, we ... read more

We made it back to Marmaris after a “little” delay on our Easy Jet flight from Gatwick airport. It was scheduled to leave at 3:30PM but we had gotten a message on our phone that it was postponed for 1 ½ hours. That wasn’t too bad and they notified us about 1:30 pm so we decided to take time to have a combination lunch/dinner at the airport. They actually don’t provide you with the actual gate that you need to go to until close to the time of departure. We were told by one of the staff that we should probably start to go through security about an hour before our flight as they would then have the gate assigned. That would mean we wouldn’t have to go until about 4PM based on this information. We ... read more

The one who knocks at the door gets the answer… ~ Emirati Proverb HE SAID... We touched down at Dubai International Airport around 5:30am and trundled into Terminal 3. I couldn’t believe how vast, clean, spacious and quiet the terminal was. It was almost unnaturally quiet. It was only after a few minutes that I noticed the signs that said it was a ‘Silent Terminal’, with no flight or passenger announcements. It was so incredibly peaceful. We literally breezed through customs. As we walked to the baggage carousel, we couldn’t believe what greeted us. Our packs were side-by-side, slowly making their way towards us. With all the hype about lost luggage over the past few months – especially on Qantas flights – we were expecting something to go wrong. We shouldn’t have worried. It was if ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Abu Dhabi August 15th 2022

Currently enjoying the romance of travel, that esprite de corps that comes from shared experiences and that spirit of adventure as we head off as Julie, I and 500 of our closest, new friends await (in the wee hours Abu Dhabi time, the silly o’clock Aussie time and the unknown hour UK wise) for our connecting flight. The airport here is huge, there are 62 gate in this terminal alone. We however as transit passengers experience just a small section although already it has seen us go through 2 security checks and all that’s got us is into the departure lounge. I think we have only 15 minutes or so more to wait but it’s difficult to tell as there are so few clocks in the terminal. Julie’s smart phone is smart enough to know where ... read more
