In Abu Dhabi rannten ... read more

Waking up this morning (Saturday 4/2) I feel awful, streaming nose and a hacking cough. I’ve tested negative for Covid but I feel very self conscious coughing so much in an environment where people are so concerned with sickness. So the long and the short of it is I am going to spend today in our cabin enjoying the sun on the balcony and recovering from my cold. Unfortunately that means Ian will be writing for you today. You have been warned! I am temporarily leaving the Plague Ship Queen Mary 2 for the Impressions of Muscat tour. The first stop is the Grand Mosque. It is the fourth biggest mosque in the World and was finished in 2006. The Grand Mosque in Dubai was finished in 2008 and in the style so typical of the ... read more

We take two days to sail to Abu Dhabi. We use the gym and I do chairasize to attempt to keep off the pounds from the lovely food we gorge on..The entertainment is very good. As we sail into Abu Dhabi we get the news that the rate of Covid infection in the ship is higher than the medical crew are happy with. So we are all “asked” to wear masks in public areas, wash hands etc and the crew will deep clean the vessel. Good luck with that, it is huge and with a myriad of surfaces. As long as we don’t become a plague ship refused entry to port after port we’ll manage. Anyway, next stop Abu Dhabi. It is the capital and second largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi lies ... read more

After four uneventful days at sea we reach Salalah, Oman and berth in a not very attractive container port. Salalah is the capital city of the Dhofar region of Oman and is in the south of the country. It is the second biggest city in the country and is judging from what we can see relatively industrial. The cement works is a local landmark and then some ! Salalah along with Yemen experience a monsoon season which lasts from July to September. (So we should be ok!) During the rains the brown and dry landscape we see is transformed to a beautiful lush green and locals and tourists flock to Salalah to experience it. But Salalah’s real claim to fame is its ancient frankincense trade and UNESCO has put it on it’s World Heritage Lis, naming ... read more

I had a 24 hour (once my flight was delayed) stay in Istanbul so I decided to take advantage of the time and go see the sites! Turkish Airlines offers a free tour of the city for any passengers with a long layover. I generally am not one for group tours, but I thought I would at least join for the bus right into town. I ended up staying with the group for the first half of the day where I met some interesting travelers from around the world. I learned that Istanbul is the largest city of Europe with 15 million people beating out Moscow at 12 million people. While it was busy and crowded, I am not sure I would have guessed it to be the largest. We started the day visiting the Hagia ... read more

What is the real truth about jet lag? Well, I know it is real, as I have suffered greatly over the years. And for a while, it got worse with age. One secret, which is not really a secret, is to time your flights to fit your sleep schedule. This, of course, assumes you can sleep on a plane or train. A red eye to the east coast was my normal flight for many years. I would have a nice dinner at home, take a little nap, shower, then head to the airport for a late night/early morning flight to Washington, DC, Boston, New York, or Hotlanta. But truth be known, I was not always at my best the next day, often falling asleep before, during, or after dinner! Another secret is that I am really ... read more

We have been back just over three weeks, but my mind keeps wandering back to the epic landscapes and vivid history of our family trip to Jordan and Egypt. Over 16 days, we completed a whirlwind tour of both countries seeing many of the most famous sights and leaving us eager to return and see more of both countries in the future. On a bright note, Riley did really well on the trip with almost no other kids to interact with! He made friends with our fellow tourists over the two weeks. After a gruelling 24 hour set of flights from Vancouver to Calgary to Frankfurt to Amman, we arrived late in the day on January 7, were greeted by a local guide and taken to our hotel. The next morning, we were up bright and ... read more

October 17 – 26, 2022 Now that our land travel was over for now in Turkey, we knew we had to buckle down and get ready to head back to the US for the winter and leave Tsamaya safely in the marina. With our flights booked for Oct 26th and returning to the marina late on the 16th, we had to start moving to get things sorted and determine what goes and what stays, clean out the refrigerator and freezer, and meet with the person that will be watching the boat while we are gone. Other things on our “to do list” were putting biocide in the diesel tank, doing an oil change, fill up the diesel tank, tie down the genoa and staysail and put sheets below (ropes for those that don’t know that term), ... read more
