Hello all, I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated but I have much to share with you. First, this blog dedicated to my time at Helike (or Nikolaiika) and another two devoted to my trips to Olympia and the Argolid, respectively. As some of you know, I’ve spent the last three weeks participating in a dig in and around the village of Nikolaiika on the shore of the Northern Peloponnese, about an hour from Patra. On the whole it was an incredible experience, largely because of the people I met there. The first two weeks, there were 11 of us altogether: Aliki, a Greek-Canadian who’d just completed a Masters in Archaeology; Effie, a Greek-American who is currently an undergraduate at Tulane; Jessica, a girl from Pennsylvania who’s just completed her undergraduate; Rachael and Erika, ... read more

My last day of work was absolutely the most fun! Not because my job isn't amazing - it is - but because Elle went the extra five hundred miles! When I got into work I had an amazing Chocolate mousse cake (for all of us). We had that for breakfast/lunch, it was the most beautiful cake with fruit arranged so beautifully on top, it was so pretty I had to take a picture. And Elle bought me a chic dress that is very trendy London:) It is so adorable, Elle has amazing taste. Work was good, it was sad that I was finishing things up and that I wouldn't be back, but I will stay in touch with them and visit in December! After work Elle took David and I out for the most incredible nigh ... read more

It is Friday and I am back, but not for long, because we 3 are off again to the island of Evia, Nick and Arlene's summer home for the weekend. We got in late, but the port street was absolutely full of people eating and having coffee and ice cream and drinks. The next day we drove to the other side of the island at a narrow point and went to a beautiful beautiful beech. Swam in some caves (I did not venture too far in). Wow. But we did have to drive through the fire area, where the Canadian water plane went down. Could not believe all the area that did burn. After this beautiful swim we went back to Styra to another night of walking along the port till 2 in the morning. On ... read more

It appears my previous entries have been lost - hopefully not a regular occurrence ! Anyway, Friday saw me leave Huddersfield and set off on my travels. The house was left spotlessly clean and empty and with a slight pang in my heart I loaded up my bike and headed off down the M1 to London. Had to stop almost immediately for a re-jig of my seat luggage as it felt like it was going to go flying off. The jouney down to Woolwich to stay over at Alan´s was tortuous to say the least - the weight of my small travelling rucksack just for the Spanish part of the trip was unpleasant but at least I knew I could off-load some stuff at Alan´s. It´s strange leaving the house for a year or so, so ... read more

The Czech Republic. Try and pronounce it with a faux Russian accent, like Natasha out of Rocky and Bulwinkle. It works for me. Again we're on a roll with only 5 days and 2 stops. Across the border from Austria and into stop numero uno, Czesky Krumlov. Through another minor miracle, we found our hostel straight off the bat, but the fun was just beginning. We had reserved all 4 beds in a 4 bed dorm with private ensuite - cheaper than all the doubles we had seen advertised on the net. Perfect. Inspection of the room revealed a joker the pack. Our PRIVATE room with PRIVATE ensuite actually involved other occupants having to pass through our room to get theirs. Plus, the PRIVATE ensuite was actually shared, ie. "come into our room please everybody, the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia August 3rd 2007

When I first arrived all I saw were giant, gross, 1980's apartment buildings. I began counting the seconds until I would leave. Really, my first impression of Valencia, Spain wasn't that different from my impression of Valencia, California. Both have mostly new construction. Both have a lot of rides. Then, slowly throughout the week, I began to warm up to it. To begin, the food here is really great. I didn't know what paella was supposed to taste like until I had it here on Tuesday. There are horchata stands on every corner. There's also a beach, if you're into that, but it's just okay. Once a year they have a Fallas Festival where they make giant, satirical, paper mache floats and then, on the third day, burn them all in a huge bonfire. They vote ... read more

Yep, no jokes, we finally tied the knot! Sorry that we had to keep it a secret but we didn't want certain family members dropping everything & flying over here - we would have loved to have had family & friends here with us, but we felt it wasn't fair to ask at such short notice. We applied for approval to marry in the UK as part of Kurt's visa application & when we returned from our trip home it was here waiting for us. The only catch was that it had to be used within 3mths, and it certainly got us thinking & the chance of a summer wedding in london followed by a croatian honeymoon was too good to pass up. The other deciding factor was that if we didn't do it now, then ... read more

Hey guys, sorry about the long time writing but the internet is not all that readily available in eastern europe (weird huh?) and the places that it is available is really expensive. Actually I was pretty suprised overall about the cost of everything here (except beer - it is more expensive to get a small soft drink than a pint of beer!!). Anyways i had all these blogs written up but since nothing is in english and i can't figure out how to edit photos in other languages i shall just publish these things and will add some photos later ... sorry but otherwise i will forget what i am wanting to write so here goes. well Turkey. ok so flew into Turkey and started my tour with Imaginative Traveller which is a tour group based ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Ibiza August 3rd 2007

Now, you know how I like to be doing what all the kids are doing. Well, all the kids in London go to Ibiza, so obviously, I had to check it out. It’s not my fault that I somehow ended up attending a bucks weekend (I didn’t know when I booked the tickets - promise). Luckily, I am one of the blokes - and … there was another girl. We both adopted boys names for the weekend, so it was like we weren’t even there! Now, obviously, what goes on tour stays on tour, so I can’t write that much (thank goodness I hear you say). What I can tell you is: • We went to three clubs - Pacha, El Divino and Space - the sound systems are all that - awesome! The clubs are ... read more

When most people think of the Czech Republic they immediately think of the wonderful majestic castles of the capital Prague. However, there is much more to this country then this tourist mad city. Decin is a small town about 30 kilometers from the German border which has the beautiful Labe ( Elbe ) river running through it. The northern area of the Czech Republic is much more rugged than the southern side with grand cliffs and great national parks filled with pristine fresh rivers and tall pine forests. The summer has not been the best I have been told but most of the days that I have spent here have been sunny with fresh cool breezes. The city itself is rather small and can easily be seen in a few hours but if you are ... read more
